Hell in the Pacific Blu-ray Review

Hell in the Pacific

Hell in the Pacific: Grueling and brilliantly acted anti-war thriller is just as socially important now as it was in 1968

War is horror. The very idea of it, stripped of its marketing and glory, is the stuff ripped from a nightmare. It’s primal and tribal and evil by design, pitting human beings against each other for murky reasons. The concept that people are programmed to think that other people are “the other”, that other human beings are bad, are “the enemy”, is ludicrous and yet still, nations wage wars for reasons both noble and craven. No matter the motive, men and women are told to kill other men and women by people who hide in safe places. Hopefully, one day, humanity will be civilized enough and evolved enough to find better ways to solve its conflicts that don’t involve offering up others as human shields.

Which brings us to director John (Deliverance, The Emerald Forest) Boorman’s gripping and seemingly forgotten 1968 thriller and morality play Hell in the Pacific, a brilliantly acted and directed war movie that strips away expected sequences of battle and bloodshed and complications of plot to simply focus on the folly of war, particularly the ways in which war totally and often irreparably dehumanizes those who are in the eye of its storm. It’s as much a horror movie as any survivalist shocker out there and it artfully avoids exploitative elements in favor of real, universally understood human drama.

In it, two of the biggest stars in their respective countries at the time, Lee Marvin (USA) and Toshiro Mifune (Japan) star as soldiers during the waning days of WW2 who, after some sort of unknown battle, end up stranded together on the shores on an uncharted island in the Pacific. Neither speaks the others language and, when they both finally realize that other is not alone, their first impulse is to murder the other. Boorman brilliantly illustrates this in a brief, surreal sequence where they both have a go at doing just that, with Mifune battering Marvin with a stick and Marvin butchering Mifune with a dagger. But they don’t kill each other, instead they circle each other in their new shared habitat, occasionally fighting and capturing and humiliating the other while simply trying to survive. Eventually, however, they both clue into the fact that their interests – eating, sleeping, enduring, even laughing when they can – are shared and an uneasy alliance and even friendship evolves. But are their similar human desires and behaviors enough to erase the invisible wall that their leaders have erected between them?

HellPacific

The horrors of war-forged cultures having empathy for the other was explored rather deftly in the controversial Season 5 The Twilight Zone episode “The Encounter”, with George Takei and Neville Brand trapped in an attic and, despite the fact that the war had been over for two decades, the impulse to kill each other still stands tall. Hell in the Pacific forgoes any supernatural hokum and instead creates a primal, savage world that’s urgent and real. Boorman’s film doesn’t side with either character, nor does ask us to. That’s the poetry of the movie. Because we are not told who is good or bad, we are forced to align ourselves with the man of our choosing. Audiences in Japan will naturally navigate towards Mifune, while American audiences will side with Marvin. Initially. But by the end of the picture, there is no xenophobia. There is no “other”. There are only two human beings at the mercy of nature.

In a bold move, Boorman insisted that neither actor was to be subtitled for the theatrical release of the movie in any territory, so the two-hander film’s sparse dialogue was incomprehensible to those who could not speak either language. Neither actor understood each other either, so we are forced to watch two men legitimately communicate and act and argue and make mirth using their bodies and vocal inflections. Kino Lorber’s gorgeous new Blu-ray release does give viewers the option of subtitles for Mifune, but we strongly suggest you stick to Boorman’s original aesthetic as it makes the film much purer an experience. The original ending is wildly nihilistic and depressing but the Blu-ray also offers the alternate ending, which is stark and just as effective, albeit for different reasons.

Hell in the Pacific is a fever dream of a movie that was ahead of its time (there are moments here that you will find in everything from Jaws to Castaway) and because of that, the movie failed at the box office and was largely forgotten. With its jazzy, primitive score by Lao Schifrin that echoes Jerry Goldsmith’s music for that same year’s Planet of the Apes, and a pair of career-best performances by two of the greatest actors of their respective generations, this is a film that is not only a masterful work of grueling cinema but an important allegorical picture whose messages are sadly just as potent today as they were in 1968.

True Detective Season Three Eyes Mahershala Ali

Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali is being eyed to lead True Detective season three. Who would you pair him with for True Detective season three?

Mahershala Ali is reportedly in talks to lead True Detective season three

Although the series’ return still does not have the official green light at HBO, The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali is in talks to lead True Detective season three. Ali took home his Oscar for his supporting role in last year’s acclaimed Best Picture winner, Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight. He’s also well known for his roles on House of Cards and Marvel‘s Luke Cage. He’s no stranger to HBO, either, having previously starred on Treme.

It was previously reported that two episodes of True Detective season three have already been written by creator Nic Pizzolatto for a possible pickup. The cable network show has been off the air for two years so far. Emmy Award winning writer David Milch, best known for creating and writing shows like NYPD Blue (co-created with Steven Bochco), Deadwood and Luck, is also on board as a writer.

The first two seasons of True Detective were a ratings success, but the second season had some trouble living up to the critical acclaim of season one. Matthew McConaughey, who starred in the first season of the show, has previously spoken out about his willingness to reprise his role. Pizzolatto, who is under contract with HBO through 2018, is currently developing a Perry Mason series with Robert Downey Jr. for the cable network.

The first season of True Detective starred McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, with the second starring Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell, and Rachel McAdams.

Coming up, Mahershala Ali can be seen in Robert Rodriguez‘s Alita: Battle Angel and, should the long gestating project finally get off the ground, the J.C. Chandor helmed Triple Frontier.

What do you think of Mahershala Ali headlining True Detective season three? Is there another actor you’d like to see him paired with? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

San Diego Comic-Con will Remain in Place Until at Least 2021

San Diego Comic-Con will remain San Diego Comic-Con until at least 2021.

Comic-Con International will remain San Diego Comic-Con through at least 2021

San Diego Comic-Con will begin yet again on July 19. Fans have dealt with futile attempts to get hotel rooms through a lottery system, and they’re going to have to do it again next year, and every year until at least 2021, according to a Friday morning announcement from San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer. According to the San Diego Tribune, the deal hinged on getting local hotels to cap their rates for the event. San Diego Comic-Con draws around 130,000 attendees annually and brings in a large chunk of the city’s revenue.

Comic-Con International spokesperson David Glanzer said in a news conference, “We have had to cap our attendance for many, many years so our income level is different and we have to be aware of that. But again, with the efforts of the mayor, the Tourism Authority, the hoteliers, we’re able to make what we have work.” There was an attempt to expand the convention center that hasn’t come to pass. Currently there is programming in the center as well as a number of adjacent hotels, meaning that attendees are often walking upwards of 30 minutes between panels and presentations.

Glanzer didn’t guarantee that San Diego would always be a home for the show. He said, “We’ve made it very, very clear we would love to stay here, but the truth of the matter is we have operated shows in Oakland, in San Francisco, San Jose, Los Angeles and in Anaheim. If the worst thing were to happen, and that is we had to leave, we all can still live in San Diego and the convention can be in another city. That’s not what we want. And I’m glad we’re calling San Diego home for another three years.”

What do you think of Comic-Con staying in San Diego for another three years? If you want it to move, what city would you like to see it in? Leave us your thoughts below or tweet us @ComingSoonet.

Deadline, meanwhile, confirms that the Joseph Kosinski, who previously directed Cruise in Oblivion, will helm. Kosinski’s name had previously been linked to the project. Although the title Top Gun: Maverick floated around briefly, the film is currently without an official title.

NBC Cancels The Carmichael Show

The Carmichael Show has been cancelled at NBC. How do you feel about NBC cancelling The Carmichael Show?

The Carmichael Show will end after three seasons on NBC

The Carmichael Show has cancelled after three seasons at NBC, The Hollywood Reporter today confirms. Created by Jerrod Carmichael, Ari Katcher Willie Hunter, and Nicholas Stoller, the acclaimed sitcom is currently in the middle of its third season, which should finish airing this summer.

RELATED: NBC Fall 2017 Schedule Announced

Inspired by the life of comedian Jerrod Carmichael, The Carmichael Show has followed Jerrod and his opinionated North Carolina family as they navigate topics that all families face today in America. Nothing is too uncomfortable to explore, including police protests, guns and religion. Jerrod often finds himself debating such issues with his old-school father, Joe (David Alan Grier), his devoutly religious mother, Cynthia (Loretta Devine), his progressive live-in girlfriend, Maxine (Amber Stevens West), his recently separated brother, Bobby (Rel Howery), and Bobby’s estranged and outspoken wife, Nekeisha (Tiffany Haddish). And somewhere in the middle of all of their disagreeing is the heart of this family.

“For three seasons (okay 2.5), I got to make a show that I love with my friends,” says Carmichael himself. “It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I was 13. Now, I’m excited to go make other things that I love. Thank you to every person who worked on or watched the Carmichael show.”

“‘The Carmichael Show’ was such a wonderful show that we choose to focus today not on its loss but on the three incredible seasons we had the pleasure to produce,” adds 20th Century Television. “We are thankful to the brilliant Jerrod Carmichael and his talented cast, and to showrunner Danielle Sanchez-Witzell, our fantastic writers and devoted production team. It’s a rarity that a comedy series tackles the social and political issues of the day in such a clever and hilariously funny way. This show was special, and we will miss it.”

Executive producers on The Carmichael Show include Jerrod Carmichael, Nick Stoller, Ravi Nandan and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel. The series has been co-produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television and Universal Television.
