Preacher Episode 2.07 Annotations: Pigs Fly and Herr Starr is Here

Welcome back brothers and sisters to our weekly feature, the Preacher Book Club, where we talk about the latest episode of AMC‘s Preacher, dissecting the episode at hand, annotating the changes made from the Garth Ennis/Steve Dillon comic book series and attempting to predict about what will be coming next. So let’s dive right into our thoughts and annotations on Preacher Episode 2.07!

Vietnam

Vietnam DOES appear within the pages of the Preacher comics, just not in the modern-day “flying pig” context of the TV show here. We see Vietnam in a few issues detailing the early life of Jesse’s father, John Custer, fighting in the army during the Vietnam war. It would have been a little nice to see some sort of nod to that, maybe a famous lighter that John Wayne handed out to soldiers that someone was using, but beggars can’t be choosers.

its herr starrrr

Herr Starr

Herr Starr is the overarching villain of the entire Preacher comic series so seeing him not only finally fully here on the show, and with a lot of screen time in this one episode, is very exciting. Some changes or alterations to the character are already seen though, such as his full name reveal. Referred to as “Klauss Helmut Starr,” the character’s full name was never actually mentioned in the source material. His training is also an invention for the series, though it is entriely in keeping with the spirit of the character in regard to his love for pain and how boring he finds “normal” things (including the types of things that would horrify normal people).

Another change is in his family background, where the show notes that he was orphaned, Herr Starr still had a father in the comics. Starr having an absent father figures into his origins as a ruthless killing machien too, and also in how he got his trademark scar over his right eye.

There are a few elements that are ripped directly from the series however, namely the first scene about his recruitment which notes his counter-terrorism background and the dialogue is nearly the same with some minor changes, though his line of “being a Christian” is close enough to the comic. Finally, when he gets assigned to the “Samson Unit” for dealing with false prophets, that’s plucked right from the books.

The Gun Trick

This quick scam by Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy isn’t from the books but is a clever little thing for them to do in an episode that’s not really about them.

preacher2071

Denis wants to turn

We learned last week that Denis is actually Cassidy’s son, and we find out now that he’s dying from heart disease and wants his dear old dad to turn him into a vampire too. Cassidy refuses in a “I’m letting you hate me because I love you” turn that is very in keeping with the character.

Tulip’s dream

Tulip’s recurring dream about getting killed by the Saint isn’t from the series either but is played off in an interesting way for the show.

The Messiah

Honestly I can’t believe that halfway into season 2 of Preacher I’m already getting to write about this character, but the seed was planted. We learn here The Grail’s master plan: before Jesus died, he fathered a child, and that bloodline has been preserved for generations so that the heir will one day lead the world as the actual descendent of Christ. There’s a catch however that we’re not seeing here, “The Messiah” is an inbred and mentally handicapped but cheerful individual. Who knows if we will actually see him this season on the series, and what the headlines will be like if we do, but the show is already preparing for his arrival.

Stephen Hawking

At least, I’m guessing Stephen Hawking, gets the biggest laugh of the season with his closing “Well, then, shut up.” And no, Stephen Hawking is not in the comics.

You can watch previews for next week’s episode below!

Hartley Sawyer Joins The Flash Season 4 as Elongated Man!

Hartley Sawyer Joins The Flash Season 4 as Elongated Man!

Hartley Sawyer joins The Flash season 4 as Elongated Man!

The CW and DC Entertainment have announced a new heroic addition to the season 4 cast of The Flash with Hartley Sawyer (Saving the Human Race, Miss 2059) as Ralph Dibny, aka Elongated Man!

RELATED: Comic-Con: The Flash Season 4 Trailer Speeds In!

One of The Flash’s most iconic allies, Ralph Dibny — a.k.a. The Elongated Man — is a fast-talking private investigator with investigative skills that rival those of Batman. Upon discovering he has the power to stretch his body to any shape or form, Dibny uses his new abilities to help Team Flash solve one of Central City’s greatest mysteries. He joins other newcomers Danny Trejo as feared bounty hunter Breacher and Neil Sandilands as the big bad for the new season, The Thinker.

Elongated Man first debuted in 1960’s The Flash #112, where he became a supporting character in the comic before later appearing in Detective Comics and eventually joining the big league as a member of the JLA. He also played a key role (along with his wife, Sue Dibny) in 2004’s impactful Identity Crisis. The hero can alter and contort the shape of his body to make it longer, larger, flatter, or just about any other shape imaginable. Combine that with his brilliant detective skills and he’s likely to become a powerful new ally to the Scarlet Speedster.

Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) lived a normal life as a perpetually tardy C.S.I. in the Central City Police Department. Barry’s life changed forever when the S.T.A.R. Labs Particle Accelerator exploded, creating a dark-matter lightning storm that struck Barry, bestowing him with super-speed and making him the fastest man alive — The Flash. But when Barry used his extraordinary abilities to travel back in time and save his mother’s life, he inadvertently created an alternate timeline known as Flashpoint; a phenomenon that gave birth to the villainous speed god known as Savitar, and changed the lives of Caitlin Snow (Danielle Panabaker) and Wally West (Keiyan Lonsdale) forever. With the help of his adoptive father, Joe West (Jesse L. Martin), his lifelong best friend and love interest Iris West (Candice Patton), and his friends at S.T.A.R. Labs — Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes), C.S.I Julian Albert (Tom Felton), and an Earth-19 novelist named H.R. Wells (Tom Cavanaugh) — Barry continues to protect the people of Central City from the meta-humans that threaten it.

The Flash will return on October 10 at 8 PM ET.

The Nightmare Before Christmas Sequel Comic on the Way

A comic continuation of The Nightmare Before Christmas is on the way from Tokyopop

A comic continuation of The Nightmare Before Christmas is on the way from Tokyopop

A sequel to Tim Burton’s 1993 stop-motion film The Nightmare Before Christmas is on the way, but it’s going to be in comic form, according to THR. Manga publisher Tokyopop has nabbed the rights for the film follow-up. In Nightmare Before Christmas: Zero’s Journey, we get a chance to catch up with arguably everyone’s favorite character, Zero the ghost dog, Jack Skellington’s loyal companion. The story will be about Zero’s adventures while lost in Christmas Town.

The series will be written by DJ Milky and the art will come from Studio DICE. Tokyopop previously put out a version of the original film’s story, and this title will be a follow-up. Nightmare Before Christmas: Zero’s Journey will be released in spring 2018, and there should be more information coming beforehand.

According to the site, Tokyopop is breaking from its usual style and the title will feature full-color single issues, with the stories then being collected into full color trade paperbacks, and black and white “pocket-sized” manga volumes, which will be released at the same time.

The Nightmare Before Christmas was the first animated film to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and was re-released annually from 2006-2009 in Disney-Digital 3D. It was the first stop-motion animated film to be fully converted to that format. The film, directed by Henry Selick, earned more than $75 million worldwide.

In The Nightmare Before Christmas, Jack Skellington is bored with Halloween and when he accidentally discovers Christmas Town, he decides to shake things up and take over Christmas himself. The film starred the voices of Danny Elfman, Catherine O’Hara and Chris Sarandon.

Are you guys excited to check out Nightmare Before Christmas: Zero’s Journey when it is released early next year? Let us know your thoughts in the comments or tweet us @ComingSoonnet.

Power and Arrow’s J.R. Ramirez joins Marvel’s Jessica Jones Season 2

Marvel has announced that J.R. Ramirez (Power) has joined the cast of Marvel’s Jessica Jones Season 2 as a recurring guest star. Ramirez is set to play Oscar, a devoted single father who moves into Jessica’s building as the new superintendent. While his young son becomes enamored with Jessica and her powers, Oscar keeps his distance, worrying about the trouble that follows people like her.

“J.R. is an incredible addition to our cast, bringing complex and subtle emotion and humor,” said Marvel’s Jessica Jones series Creator and Executive Producer, Melissa Rosenberg. “He exudes warmth, edge and intelligence, and blends perfectly with our tone.”

This isn’t Ramirez first appearance in a comic book series, having first played the role of the vigilante Wildcat on The CW’s Arrow.

A Netflix original series, Marvel’s Jessica Jones is a suspenseful, edgy look into the life of Jessica Jones, one of the most popular new Marvel characters of the last decade, as she faces demons from within and without. After a tragic ending to her short-lived Super Hero stint, Jessica Jones is rebuilding her personal life and career as a detective who gets pulled into cases in New York City.

Krysten Ritter stars as the title hero in the series and was joined in season one by Mike Colter (Luke Cage), Rachael Taylor (Trish Walker), Carrie-Anne Moss, Eka Darville, Erin Moriarty, and Wil Traval. Ritter can next be seen as the character in the upcoming Marvel’s The Defenders, which debuts August 18 on Netflix. Golden Globe winner and two-time Academy Award-nominated actress Janet McTeer (TumbleweedsAlbert NobbsMe Before You) joined the series earlier this year in a mystery role that will have a huge impact on the life of Jessica Jones. Additionally, Leah Gibson has joined the series as Ingrid, a street-wise woman trained as a nurse.
