This Is Us star Chrissy Metz set to star in The Impossible

Chrissy Metz (This Is Us) is set to star in the upcoming film The Impossible, according to Deadline. The film comes to us from Fox 2000 and producer DeVon Franklin (Miracles From Heaven). The Impossible will be directed by Roxann Dawson (House of CardsAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) from a script based on the Joyce Smith novel “The Impossible: The Miraculous Story of a Mother’s Faith and Her Child’s Resurrection,” based on the true story. The script was written by Grant Nieporte (Seven Pounds). Marisa Paiva will oversee for the studio.

The Impossible is the story of Joyce, who’s son fell into a frozen lake in Missouri. Metz will star as Joyce, who sat next to the 14-year-old’s bed until his heart started beating again. Production is expected to begin in Winnipeg in March of this year.

Here is what Amazon says about the book: “When Joyce Smith’s fourteen-year-old son John fell through an icy Missouri lake one winter morning, she and her family had seemingly lost everything. At the hospital, John lay lifeless for more than sixty minutes. But Joyce was not ready to give up on her son. She mustered all her faith and strength into one force and cried out to God in a loud voice to save him. Miraculously, her son’s heart immediately started beating again. In the coming days, John would defy every expert, every case history, and every scientific prediction. Sixteen days after falling through the ice and being clinically dead for an hour, he walked out of the hospital under his own power, completely healed.”

Michelle MacLaren to Direct Chris Pratt in Cowboy Ninja Viking

Cowboy Ninja Viking Release Date Announced

Michelle MacLaren to direct Chris Pratt in Cowboy Ninja Viking

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Pictures has finally found a Cowboy Ninja Viking director in sought-after TV helmer Michelle MacLaren (Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones), who beat out Jennifer Yuh Nelson (Kung Fu Panda) and Rick Famuyiwa (Dope) for the job. Fans will remember that MacLaren was originally set to make here feature directorial debut with last year’s Wonder Woman before she left over creative differences. She most recently helmed the pilot for HBO’s The Deuce, and also has the WWII thriller The Nightingale in development at Tri-Star. Universal previously courted the directing duo of David Leitch and Chad Stahelski (John Wick) as well as World War Z‘s Marc Forster to helm the film.

Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World franchises) will star as a new kind of assassin who manifests the toughest skills of three different personas: COWBOY NINJA VIKING. The hard-edged actioner laced with attitude is based on the Image Comics graphic novel by AJ Lieberman and illustrator Riley Rossmo.

The film version of Cowboy Ninja Viking features a screenplay originally written by Zombieland and Deadpool scribes Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, which was rewritten by Craig Mazin (The Hangover Part II, Identity Thief). Guymon Casady, Ben Forkner and Mark Gordon are attached to produce.

Cowboy Ninja Viking will arrive in theaters on Friday, June 28, 2019.

The Upcoming Disney Live-Action Remakes of Animated Classics

The Upcoming Disney Live-Action Remakes of Animated Classics

The upcoming Disney live-action remakes of animated classics

Disney has been killing it in general with movies lately. Between The Last Jedi for Star Wars and the entire MCU leading up to Infinity War, they’ve got a lot going on. In particular though, their live-action adaptions of classics like Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Pete’s Dragon, and especially the billion dollar hit Beauty and the Beast have been extremely popular. As a result, we’ll be seeing a lot more of them in the future. In order to help you keep track of what’s on its way, here’s a list of what you can expect to be coming to theaters at some point:

One of the first live-action remakes to be announced, Dumbo will be using high tech computer graphics to bring the title character and his animal friends to life alongside live-action stars Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Eva Green, and others. The animals in The Jungle Book looked pretty good and the technology is only improving, so this one should be a visual treat. The Tim Burton-directed film is coming to theaters on March 29, 2019.

Aladdin has finished production and is also on its way in leu of the apparently-scrapped Genie spinoff. Fans of the character don’t need to worry though, because Will Smith has been cast as the famously fun blue wish granter in the May 24, 2019 release. In addition, the cast has apparently been carefully selected as to be racially accurate, (not just a bunch of white people) and so it will also include the likes of Mena Massoud as Aladdin, and Naomi Scott as Jasmine. Similarly, Mulan is getting a live-action adaption that will also be focused on accurate casting, with Chinese actress Yifei Liu playing Mulan.

While The Jungle Book 2 is being made, a The Lion King live-action adaption is being created as well. The Jon Favreau film, scheduled for July 19, 2019, will stars Donald Glover, James Earl Jones, Billy Eichner, Seth Rogen, John Oliver, Alfre Woodard, Beyonce Knowles, Chiwetel Ejiofor, JD McCrary, Shahadi Wright Joseph, John Kani, Florence Kasumba, Eric Andre, and Keegan-Michael Key.

Christopher Robin (opening August 3, 2018) is something of an oddity on this list, because rather than being a straight-up remake, it instead appears to be taking a similar angle to the Robin Williams movie Hook. Christopher Robin will be a grown up businessman living a normal life until Winnie the Pooh finds him in need of help, throwing his life into talking animal-based chaos. This should be interesting, since there’s so many directions the concept could be taken. Ewan McGregor and Hayley Atwell star.

Sticking with the alternate perspective angle angle that made Maleficent so interesting, Prince Charming will be a film about the titular prince’s lesser known brother? It seems he’s not quite as charming as his name and his sibling would suggest, which should make for a quirky watch, especially since Stephen Chbosky of The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Wonder fame will be on board as director here.

Pinocchio and James and the Giant Peach are both happening, though not much is known about them thus far. Oliver Twist is getting an adaption too, titled Oliver!. Much like the previous couple, not much is known about them, but one detail sticks out — Ice Cube is attached to the project, and it has been said that a hip-hop twist is going to be added to, well, Twist.

The next couple of movies are alternate takes on old movies. Cruella will be a movie about the 101 Dalmations villainess and it will have Emma Stone as its star actress, whereas Tink will be about Peter Pan’s fairy friend and Reese Witherspoon will be holding down the main role. Fittingly, a Peter Pan live-action movie is also being made, but it is unknown if that will connect to Tink at all.

Finally, The Sword in the Stone and The Little Mermaid are both set to get live-action adaptions. Both will obviously be magical fantasies brought to life, but both are a ways off from completion at the moment. So is the live-action adaption of the movie based on that big, evil winged guy from Fantasia, which is apparently a thing.

Point is, no matter which parts of Disney you’re a fan of, you’ve got something to look forward to because they’ve got you covered.

Downton Abbey’s Julian Fellowes Brings The Gilded Age to NBC

Downton Abbey's Julian Fellowes Brings The Gilded Age to NBC

Downton Abbey’s Julian Fellowes brings The Gilded Age to NBC

NBC is proudly entering The Gilded Age. For those missing the Dowager Countess’ condescending glares or the evening ring of the dinner bell, there’s a new Julian Fellowes drama on tap at NBC that brings an upstairs/downstairs tale Stateside.

The network is teaming with the acclaimed writer and executive producer Gareth Neame, the creative forces behind the hugely popular PBS series Downton Abbey, for a 10-episode series order that will begin in 2019.

The series will be produced by Universal Television and executive produced by Fellowes and Neame.

Fellowes, who is an Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe-winning writer, was honored with an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries, Movie or Dramatic Special and was nominated three other times. On the film side, Fellowes won an Oscar in 2002 and was Golden Globe nominated for his screenplay of Gosford Park.

“To write ‘The Gilded Age’ is the fulfillment of a personal dream,” Fellowes said. “I have been fascinated by this period of American history for many years and now NBC has given me the chance to bring it to a modern audience. I could not be more excited and thrilled. The truth is, America is a wonderful country with a rich and varied history, and nothing could give me more pleasure than be the person to bring that compelling history to the screen.”

“Julian Fellowes has the peerless ability to create complex characters and relationships set against a fantastic backdrop,” said Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment. “We’re thrilled that NBC and Universal Television will bring you his delicious new take on both the emerging rich and the working class who were intricately entwined in opulent New York in 1882. It’s an addictive new universe of fabulous people with the same signature style, wit and emotional resonance for which Julian is famous.”

The Gilded Age in 1880s New York City was a period of immense social upheaval, of huge fortunes made and lost, and of palaces that spanned the length of Fifth Avenue. In the series, Marian Brook is the wide-eyed young scion of a conservative family who will embark on infiltrating the wealthy neighboring family dominated by ruthless railroad tycoon George Russell, his rakish and available son Larry, and his ambitious wife Bertha, whose “new money” is a barrier to acceptance by the Astor and Vanderbilt set. Marian is about to experience a whole new world springing up right outside her front door.

Fellowes’ Downton Abbey, which was produced by Neame’s Carnival Films, ran for six seasons and has been seen in more than 250 territories worldwide, is recognized as one of the most acclaimed and popular British drama series of all time. The series was an immediate hit in the U.S. and U.K. and won both the Emmy in 2011 for Outstanding Miniseries or Movie and the Golden Globe the following year for Best Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television. In fact, Downton Abbey is the most nominated non-U.S. show in the history of the Emmys with 69 nominations and 15 wins.

Katherine Heigl Joins Suits Season 8 as Regular

Katherine Heigl joins Suits Season 8 as regular

Katherine Heigl (Grey’s Anatomy) has been cast in a new series regular role for Season 8 of USA Network’s Suits. Set to premiere later this year, Heigl will star opposite Gabriel Macht (Harvey Specter) as Samantha Wheeler – a talented new partner at Pearson Specter Litt who challenges the status quo and will either become the firm’s greatest ally … or most powerful enemy. Heigl joins the Suits ensemble alongside Macht, Sarah Rafferty (Donna Paulsen), Rick Hoffman (Louis Litt) and new series regular Dulé Hill (Alex Williams). Suits Season 8 begins production this April in Toronto.

“Joining ‘Suits’ was the perfect organic way to not only collaborate with an EP I admire deeply, but to also become part of a show and cast that I am an immense fan of,” shared Katherine Heigl. “I have watched ‘Suits’ from the very beginning and feel incredibly lucky to be the newest member of the Pearson Specter Litt family.”

“On behalf of the entire ‘Suits’ team, I am extraordinarily excited to welcome Katherine Heigl into our family – I have always been a big fan of her work and was delighted to discover she was an avid ‘Suits’ fan herself,” expressed Aaron Korsh, creator and executive producer of ‘Suits.’ “I cannot wait to have her come play with our entire cast and crew. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Harvey, Louis, Donna and Alex as the mysterious Samantha Wheeler is a direct threat to their status quo. One thing is for sure – Samantha’s wit, charm, loyalty, strength and vulnerability will all be put to the test as she muscles her way into the firm currently known as Pearson Specter Litt.”

Heigl is an Emmy Award-winning and two-time Golden Globe-nominated actress, as well as a producer. She is best known for starring in the feature films 27 Dresses, Knocked Up and The Ugly Truth, which she also executive produced, as well as for her work on ABC’s critically-acclaimed drama Grey’s Anatomy. Most recently, Heigl starred in the thriller Unforgettable.

It was announced yesterday that USA Network and Universal Cable Productions had renewed Suits for an 8th season. Additionally, the network announced that the back half of Suits’ Season 7 will premiere on Wednesday, March 28 at 9/8c, culminating in a 2-hour season finale on Wednesday, April 25 – an arc in which Suits says goodbye to characters Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams) and Rachel Zane (Meghan Markle).

From Universal Cable Productions, Suits was created and is executive produced by Aaron Korsh. Doug Liman, David Bartis and Gene Klein of Hypnotic serve as executive producers. Genevieve Sparling, Ethan Drogin and Christopher Misiano also serve as executive producers.

Paramount Set to Adapt Ology Book Series Into Franchise

Paramount set to adapt Ology book series into franchise

Deadline brings word that Paramount Pictures has set up another writer’s room in the interest of hammering out a hopeful franchise for the studio. This time they’ve nabbed the rights to the Ology book series.

Created by author Dugald Steer, the books are put together as a series of encyclopedias and guides about various fantasy and other genre elements. Entries in the series include Dragonology, Egyptology, Wizardology, Pirateology, Mythology, Spyology, Oceanology, Vampireology, Alienology, Illusionology, Dinosaurology, Dungeonology, and Knightology.

The writer’s room that Paramount has assembled will be headed up by Academy Award winner Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind) and includes Jeff Pinkner (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon, Lindsey Beer (The Kingkiller Chronicle), Joe Robert Cole (Black Panther, The People Vs. OJ Simpson), Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Marvel), and Christina Hodson (Bumblebee).

Deadline notes that Paramount is hoping each of the writers will take to one of the 13 books in the series and come up with a treatment for adapting it into a feature film. After developing the ideas, and creating concept art for the films, the long-term plan is to create a series of seven interconnected scripts. The outlet notes Paramount wants to make the series into “a live-action family franchise universe, built around a research institute, where the fringe sciences that no one else takes seriously are studied in earnest.”

Are you looking forward to seeing the Ology book series on the big screen? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Kevin Feige Says Marvel Studios Fox Merger Won’t Happen Soon

Kevin Feige says Marvel Studios Fox merger won’t happen soon

While the mega-merger between The Walt Disney Company (which operates the Marvel Cinematic Universe) and 21st Century Fox (which controls the X-Men and Fantastic Four rights) won’t happen for another 18 months due to legalities, fans expect MCU head honcho Kevin Feige to already have a plan in place. In fact, he does not, and he told Vulture during promotions for Black Panther that he wasn’t even in the loop on the deal until after the fact.

“I read about it in the press like most people did,” Feige said. “These are big deals, and certainly above my pay grade.”

While Feige has famously indicated in the past that Marvel Studios has contingency plans in case any wayward characters like Fantastic Four or X-Men should find their way back to the House of Ideas proper, he states (perhaps coyly) that there has been zilch planning about the repercussions of the merger.

“The truth of the matter as I understand it is the deal has to be figured out,” said Feige. “There’s been no communication. We’re not thinking about it. We’re focusing on everything we’ve already announced. If and when the deal actually happens, we’ll start to think more about it. Until then, we have a lot to do… It would be years away. We’ve announced everything through 2019, so none of those would be adjusted. I think about it through 2019, through the movies we’ve already shot or are about to start filming. I’m hoping to deliver on everything we’ve promised thus far.”

The current state of the MCU after Black Panther opens on February 16 is fairly clear. This year Avengers: Infinity War will open on May 4, 2018, followed by Ant-Man and The Wasp two months later on July 6, 2018. The Captain Marvel movie starring Brie Larson, which just began filming, will kick off next year’s crop on March 8, 2019. The untitled fourth Avengers film, which just wrapped shooting, will open on May 3, 2019, thus ending Phase 3 of the MCU. Phase 4 will likely kick off on July 5, 2019 with Jon Watts’ Untitled Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel, and beyond that the only other confirmed film is James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which will open sometime in 2020. A Black Widow solo movie is also being mulled for a 2020 release, with Jac Schaeffer reportedly penning the script. Given that Marvel has begun releasing three movies a year, expect at least one unannounced film to fill that third slot for 2020.

Other films beyond the Fox/Marvel merger that could fill those dates include Doctor Strange 2 and, because we know Marvel would never leave a trilogy hanging, likely an Ant-Man 3. On pure speculation, given how huge Black Panther is expected to open, don’t be surprised if a Black Panther 2 gets announced as well, granting Marvel their own James Bond-ian franchise. There have also been rumors of Blade being integrated into the MCU proper, but we’ll believe it when we see it.

How would you like Fantastic Four and X-Men to be integrated into the MCU? Who would be a good director to lead those projects? Let us know in the comments below!

The Best Horror Movies Inspired by True Events

The Best Horror Movies Inspired by True Events - The Conjuring Universe

The Best Horror Movies Inspired by True Stories

The best horror often comes from not just from the imagination, but from real life. The truth is, there are an incredible amount of horror movies that carry the “based on a true story” tagline; it seems rare to come across any in recent years that don’t claim to be rooted in reality. Audiences may feel that this is a gimmick loosely used to instill even more terror into the viewer, but often times it can just be a little piece of history – or much more – that have inspired some of the most iconic scary movies to date. In honor of the newest based on a true story horror movie, the upcoming Winchester, here are a handful of the best horror movies that came to life (and were all the more terrifying) thanks to real life events.

The Conjuring Universe

With the growing success and popularity of each new addition to The Conjuring Universe, Ed and Lorraine Warren have become household names to millions of horror fans worldwide. The real-life couple was the most well-known paranormal investigators in the world. They even built their own occult museum in Monroe, Connecticut, containing many supposed supernatural items they found during their investigations (such as the infamous doll, Annabelle).

The Warren’s fascinating journey has proven to be a huge success for the big screen, expanding into its own franchise of prequels and spinoffs — headed up by horror master James Wan — and with no sign of slowing down.

The Best Horror Movies Inspired by True Events - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Ed Gein has inspired a number of scary movie characters since his crimes were made public in the 1950s, including the iconic horror villain Leatherface. Gein was tied to the murders of two women (one he beheaded and gutted) but it was his other extracurricular activities that make his case all the more disturbing.

Stemming from a repressed childhood due to his controlling mother, Gein grew up obsessively devoted to her. Her death triggered a deranged spiral, and after confessing to his killings also admitted to grave robbing. Gein cut off dead body parts, committed necrophilia, and used skin from the corpses to make skin suits as well as items around the house such as lampshades.

The Best Horror Movies Inspired by True Events - The Exorcist

The Exorcist

The true story that inspired one of the most shocking horror movies of all time is seemingly less well-known than the other histories on this list. Given the fictitious name of Roland Doe by the Jesuit priests who performed a “months-long exorcism” on him, The Exorcist is based on the possession of a 14-year-old boy from Maryland in 1949. The exorcism supposedly took place in the upstairs bedroom (much like Regan from the movie) at a relative’s home.

The exorcism apparently worked, and as far as it was last reported in 2016, the subject was still alive at the ripe old age of 78. Doe, understandably, never spoke about his possession. His boyhood home where the possession first began (including violent bed shaking, furniture moving, and scratching noises on the walls) remains outside Washington, DC.

The Best Horror Movies Inspired by True Events - Psycho

Psycho

Norman Bates was another fictional character inspired by Ed Gein, particularly for his obsession with his mother. While Norman never donned any skin suits like Gein did in real-life, the movie does imply grave robbing when Mama Bates’ skeletal corpse is found “living” in Norman’s house. The movie takes the characterization a step further with Norman suffering from dissociative identity disorder, taking his mother’s identity alongside his own, wearing her clothes, and carrying on complete conversations with “mother,” completely in denial that she is indeed dead.

The Best Horror Movies Inspired by True Events - The Silence of the Lambs

The Silence of the Lambs

In the famous first installment featuring Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal the Cannibal, there are a couple of characters in the crime thriller that were inspired by true characters. Once again, Ed Gein makes an appearance, this time as Jame Gumb, aka “Buffalo Bill.” The serial killer kidnaps and murders women, skinning them in order to make a woman skin suit for himself, directly reminiscent of Gein’s own habit of making skin suits. It’s said that the character was inspired by a handful of other prolific serial killers as well.

FBI agent Jack Crawford, who also appears in Red Dragon and NBC’s former television series, Hannibal, was inspired by real-life agent John E. Douglas, known for his ability to profile serial killers and who ultimately helped the FBI embrace the importance of behavioral science. He even coined the term “serial killer,” and his real-life investigations and interviews with serial killers can be seen on Netflix’s true crime drama series, Mindhunter.

The Best Horror Movies Inspired by True Events - The Amityville Horror

The Amityville Horror

This particular story is pretty well-known among horror fans and paranormal investigators. Not only was the case investigated by our very own Ed and Lorraine Warren, but the house earned the reputation for being “America’s most haunted house” after a mass murder, later tormenting the Lutz family. The haunting of the New York residence started after 23-year-old Ronald J. DeFeo Jr. killed his parents and his four siblings with a rifle in 1974 as they slept.

Just over a year later, the Lutz family moved in, only lasting 28 days before being driven from the home. The family said that patriarch George Lutz would wake up every morning at 3:15, around the time of the DeFeo murders. There were also reports of strange odors, green slime, cold spots, the garage door opening and closing, mother Kathy and sons Daniel and Christopher levitating off of their beds, sightings of a pig-like creature with red eyes, and an invisible entity “knocking a knife down in the kitchen.” A priest even came to bless the house and was supposedly yelled at to “get out” by a voice screaming at him.

Afterwards, George and Kathy passed a lie detector test when telling their story, and Ron DeFeo, still serving a 25-year-life sentence, claimed at one point that voices told him to kill his family.

The Best Horror Movies Inspired by True Events - The Strangers

The Strangers

Director Bryan Bertino’s horror film was somewhat inspired by Charles Manson and the murders committed by the infamous Manson Family followers in 1969 after he read the true crime book based on the killings called Helter Skelter.

Mainly, though, it was Bertino’s childhood experience when he and his little sister were home alone and heard a knock on the door. After answering it, his little sister was asked by the people at the door if someone who didn’t live there was home, and then the strangers left right after. The siblings later found out that those same strangers were breaking into homes using this particular tactic if no one answered the door. That, along with the question of, “what if someone breaks in while you’re home?”, became Bertino’s vision for The Strangers.

The Best Horror Movies Inspired by True Events - A Nightmare on Elm Street

A Nightmare on Elm Street

Wes Craven drew inspiration for his nightmare villain, Freddy Krueger, after reading an article in the L.A. Times about a family that had landed in the United States after surviving the killing fields in Cambodia. One of the children had nightmares, telling his parents he was terrified to sleep because he would dream about something chasing him that he knew would catch him if he didn’t stay awake.

One night, after managing to stay awake for a few days at a time, the boy died after he finally fell asleep. His parents woke up to him screaming in the middle of the night, during a nightmare, and was dead by the time they reached him. As Craven put it: “Here was a youngster having a vision of a horror that everyone older was denying. That became the central line of ‘Nightmare on Elm Street.’”

The Best Horror Movies Inspired by True Events - The Serpent and the Rainbow

The Serpent and the Rainbow

Wes Craven being inspired by real-life horrors didn’t stop with Freddy. In 1962, Haiti native Clairvius Narcisse went to the hospital after becoming ill. After experiencing severe symptoms, Narcisse apparently died. The twist? Just like in the movie, the man had actually been buried alive, waking up in a coffin and buried in his own grave.

His brother allegedly planned the whole thing, acquiring help from a voodoo Shaman who poisoned Narcisse with a pufferfish and toad toxin combination that made him appear dead. That same Shaman supposedly later had Narcisse exhumed and transferred elsewhere, where he was routinely drugged and poisoned in order to keep him in a zombie-like state and was forced to work in a sugar plantation with others being drugged like him. It took two years for Narcisse to escape, only returning home once he learned of his brother’s death.

The Best Horror Movies Inspired by True Events - Child's Play

Child’s Play

We’ve already briefly mentioned Annabelle, so why not the haunted doll, Robert, who inspired our favorite Good Guy? According to reports, Robert Eugene Otto, a Florida painter, once owned the doll who is dressed up as an American naval officer holding a stuffed lion. Otto received Robert from a female servant who happened to practice voodoo and used to take care of his parents’ house. Abused and seeking revenge on the family, the girl supposedly possessed the doll. While it never went on a killing spree like Chucky, Robert the doll would apparently speak to the young Otto in his bedroom, cause him nightmares, and strange things and misfortunes occurred to the family. Otto always blamed Robert.

There were even reports of the doll moving around the house, according to neighbors and friends. Otto inherited his parent’s house after they died, and despite having a “deep connection” with Robert, Otto’s wife demanded the doll remain locked in the attic. Visitors reported hearing footsteps and laughter coming from the attic. Otto also discovered the doll several times in a rocking chair elsewhere in the house. Even after Otto died in 1974, the new tenant’s 10-year-old daughter was tormented by the doll. Robert currently resides at the Key West Martello Museum, where employees claim that the doll has moved around and possibly left its case before.

The Best Horror Movies Inspired by True Events - The Exorcism of Emily Rose

The Exorcism of Emily Rose

Following in the footsteps of The Exorcist (and preceding other demonic movies based on true events such as The Possession and The Rite), The Exorcism of Emily Rose was inspired by the real-life story of Anneliese Michel. Her symptoms began in 1968 with doctors believing she had “Grand Mal” epilepsy. By 1970, Anneliese began to believe that she was possessed after experiencing “devilish” visions while praying.

Three years later, the desperate parents reached out to a number of pastors so Anneliese could receive an exorcism. The 20-year-old Anneliese was rejected, though, continuing with the same medication and treatment she had undergone for years now with no improvement. Within a year, her symptoms worsened, including attacking her family, eating spiders, flies, coal and ingesting her own urine as well as beginning to harm herself and destroying religious items (such as crucifixes or painted images of Jesus) while screaming throughout the house.

Finally, in 1975, an exorcism was permitted which resulted in “one or two exorcism sessions” held each week from September of 1975 to July 1976. The final day of the Exorcism Rite was on June 30th, 1976, and Anneliese was announced dead on July 1st, 1976. Her final words to the exorcists were, “Beg for absolution,” and to her mom, “Mother, I’m afraid.” Evidence found that Anneliese had starved to death and the exorcists as well as Anneliese’s parents were found guilty of manslaughter due to negligence and not providing her with first aid. Videos containing terrifying images and sounds of the supposed real exorcism have been posted online.

The Best Horror Movies Inspired by True Events - Jaws

Jaws

Steven Spielberg’s popular thriller was adapted by Peter Benchley’s novel, which was based on a real-life rogue shark that left five victims in its wake in 1916 near the Jersey Shore. The shark traveled over 30 miles between a couple of the attacks, leaving four people dead — including an 11-year-old boy. The only surviving victim was a teenager named Joseph Dunn. The attacks were said to happen close to shore, and Ichthyologist George Burgess called it the “most unique set of shark attacks that ever have occurred.”

The Best Horror Movies Inspired by True Events - The Hills Have Eyes

The Hills Have Eyes

It’s become clear that Wes Craven’s theme of re-imagining true-life horrors on screen makes a solid argument for people being the scariest monsters. The tradition continues with the true story that inspired the horror classic, The Hills Have Eyes. The story of Alexander “Sawney” Bean and his family begins in the 15th century when they fled society to live in a system of caves located in Bennane Head, Scotland. The clan (which expanded to about 48 family members in the caves over a 25-year period) ambushed, robbed, murdered, and ate any person that came into their territory.

The nearby village was left unsure of who was to blame for any of the disappearances. After attempting to attack a man who was able to hold them off with a sword until help arrived, the family was captured and “condemned to death without a trial.” The men, women, and children were essentially tortured to death and/or burned alive as punishment for their crimes. It’s believed that the Bean family killed over 1,000 people.

The Best Horror Movies Inspired by True Events - The Mothman Prophecies

The Mothman Prophecies

The “Mothman” legend takes us to November of 1996 in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Two sets of married couples claimed to have seen two giant red eyes and described the creature as being “6-to-7 feet tall and no head, as if the eyes were in the breast area, and with huge wings.” The two couples told police that the creature followed them to the city limits; the local sheriff only found a “puff of smoke” when he went to investigate.

Over the next year or so, 200 individuals reported experiencing strange phenomena with about half of them claiming that they saw Mothman (as the creature was dubbed by a copy editor at the local newspaper). Journalist John Keel was assigned to the area, where more strange occurrences were reported and Keel began to experience “prophecies.” Everything came to a head when one day the Silver Bridge that crossed over the Ohio River between Gallipolis, Ohio and Point Pleasant, West Virginia (the location of the first Mothman sighting) collapsed, killing 46 people. It was reported that many of the people who died on that bridge were related to people who had witnessed the Mothman.

The Best Horror Movies Inspired by True Events - Open Water

Open Water

After accidentally being left behind by a diving company on January 25, 1998, Tom and Eileen Lonergan disappeared off of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, and their bodies were never found.

Investigators say the couple likely survived the night as a note was written on a dive slate by Tom dated on January 26, begging for help. According to Jack Nairn, the skipper for the diving company, Outer Edge, the Lonergan’s passports and wallets were found in a bag two days after the couple was left behind, meaning the couple was likely dead by the time the alarm was raised.

By the following month, a wetsuit said to be in Eileen’s size washed up in north Queensland, and dive jackets containing Tom and Eileen’s names as well as their air tanks and one of Eileen’s diving fins were later found washed ashore north of Port Douglas. While investigators cannot be 100% sure what happened to the couple without being able to examine their bodies, their best guess was that the two likely suffered from dehydration and drowned.

If there’s anything this list proves, it’s that reality is far scarier than fiction.
