Jason Bourne hits $110 million blobally, Bad Moms opens strong
Nine years after Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass last teamed for The Bourne Ultimatum, Universal Pictures‘ Jason Bourne dominated the worldwide box office this weekend with an estimated $110.1 million. The film opened with an estimated $60 million from 4,026 North American theaters, an average of $14,903 per theater. This marks the second-biggest opening for the “Bourne” series in North America, as well as Matt Damon’s second highest-grossing opening of his career, both behind Damon’s previous Bourne installment, The Bourne Ultimatum, in 2007.
Jason Bourne opened in 46 international markets and grossed an estimated $50.1 million this weekend, making it the No. 1 film at the international box office and the biggest international opening weekend of all the “Bourne” films. Jason Bourne is the No. 1 film domestically, internationally and worldwide this weekend, including No. 1 openings in 27 territories. There are 20 more markets to release the film. Next weekend, Jason Bourne opens in Argentina, Egypt, India and Slovenia. China opens Aug. 23, Mexico Aug. 26 and Russia Sept. 1.
Also starring Julia Stiles, Alicia Vikander, Vincent Cassel, and Tommy Lee Jones, Jason Bourne received an A- CinemaScore from audiences. It was made for about $120 million, not counting marketing expenses.
Dropping a spot to second place and 59.5% in ticket sales, Paramount Pictures’ Star Trek Beyond added $24 million to bring its two-week total to $105.7 million domestically. Internationally, the third installment in the current film series has earned $54.8 million for a worldwide total of $160.5 million. Made for $185 million, the Justin Lin-directed film stars Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, and Idris Elba. The previous film, Star Trek Into Darkness, earned $228.8 million domestically and $238.6 million overseas in 2013 for a worldwide total of $467.4 million.
Coming in at No. 3 in North America, STX Entertainment‘s Bad Moms enjoyed a strong opening this weekend taking in $23.4 million at 3,215 locations, an average of $7,278 per location. Produced for $20 million, the R-rated comedy received an A CinemaScore and the audience was 82% female. Written and directed by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, Bad Moms stars Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell, Kathryn Hahn, Jay Hernandez, Annie Mumolo, Jada Pinkett Smith and Christina Applegate.
llumination Entertainment’s The Secret Life of Pets, the fifth fully-animated feature-film collaboration with Universal, earned $18.2 million in fourth place at the domestic box office, for a four-week total of $296.2 million. Made for $75 million, The Secret Life of Pets has grossed $99 million internationally for a worldwide sum of $395.2 million. The Secret Life of Pets was directed by Chris Renaud (Despicable Me, Despicable Me 2) and co-directed by Yarrow Cheney and written by Cinco Paul & Ken Daurio and Brian Lynch. The movie stars Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet and Kevin Hart in their animated feature-film debuts, with co-stars Jenny Slate, Ellie Kemper, Lake Bell, Dana Carvey, Hannibal Buress, Bobby Moynihan, Steve Coogan and Albert Brooks.
Rounding out the top five was New Line’s Lights Out, produced by James Wan. In its second weekend, the David F. Sandberg-directed thriller added $10.8 million for a total of $42.9 million. Internationally, Lights Out grossed $8.1 million in 38 markets and the overseas total stands at $20.8 million. The movie, which cost less than $5 million to make, has now earned $63.7 million worldwide.
20th Century Fox and Blue Sky Studios’ Ice Age: Collision Course earned $10.5 million domestically in the sixth spot its second weekend for a total of $42.1 million. As is the norm for these films, it is performing much better overseas, having earned $183 million so far. Still, it’s going to be tough for “Collision Course” to come anywhere near the $877.2 million that Ice Age: Continental Drift grossed globally in 2012.
In seventh place, Sony Pictures’ Ghostbusters earned $9.8 million its third weekend for a total of $106.2 million. Internationally, the film added $10.7 million for a total of $52 million and worldwide sum of $158.2 million. Made for about $144 million, the Paul Feig-directed film received a B+ CinemaScore from audiences. Ghostbusters stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Charles Dance, Michael Kenneth Williams and Chris Hemsworth.
Also, Lionsgate’s new thriller Nerve brought in $9 million its first weekend in eighth place and has earned $15.1 million since opening on Wednesday. Receiving an A- CinemaScore, the $20 million film was directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Shulman and stars Emma Roberts and Dave Franco.
