Foe Review: Emotionally Profound Sci-Fi Thriller

It’s not often that a movie perfectly understands what the science fiction genre should do. Garth Davis, director of films like Lion and Mary Magdalene, has crafted a truly special film with Foe. This movie stars Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan as a married couple living in the Midwest in 2065, the setting for a dystopian future where Earth is becoming increasingly uninhabitable and some are moving to a space station. When a man named Terrance (Aaron Pierre) arrives at their door with an unusual proposition, everything kicks into gear, and we have a beautiful film that deals with timely, universal themes.

With A.I. as a constant topic of discussion in the media lately, it’s fascinating to see how films reflect this subject. Foe features the idea of human substitutes, designed to serve in the place of a human in certain situations where humans cannot be present. This movie delves into the concept of whether a person can truly be replicated, with some ideas feeling reminiscent of Blade Runner. Not only is it a very suitable film for the times, but it also subverts a few sci-fi tropes. Typically, when the call to action involves a character being plucked out of their lives to go to space, it is an exciting moment.

However, Foe goes down a different route. Instead, it shows the emotional depth of that decision. Junior (Mescal) is chosen to go into space, and he would have to leave his wife, Henrietta (Ronan), behind. There are bits of Interstellar here as we get to sit with these two people and their emotions. Davis spends a lot of time examining them. Through their dialogue, we see their perfections, their imperfections, everything that makes them work, and everything that doesn’t. They feel lived in, with a long history behind them that they look back upon while being forced to look forward to the future.

Foe is science fiction, it’s psychological thriller, but above all else, it’s a drama. There’s a strong emotional relationship at the center of this film that makes every event very compelling. It sometimes plays like a twisted romance drama that starts out beautiful but takes a hell of a turn in the second half. Davis successfully gets you to care about the characters this movie surrounds. At the core, we have a couple about to be torn apart by external forces, which is heart wrenching and tragic. One particularly well-written scene features Junior telling Henrietta all of the small things he will miss about her, which will resonate with many viewers, myself included.

Mescal is proving himself to be a movie star. He got an Oscar nomination for Aftersun, and this is his second appearance at NYFF after his role in the fantastic All of Us Strangers. He is similarly phenomenal here. There are a few scenes, particularly one where he demonstrates an unspeakable rage, where you get a sense of how fantastic of a performer he is. With his upcoming role in Gladiator 2, his career is blooming in the direction he deserves. Ronan is one of the best actresses working today, and she brings power and gravitas to her character. Furthermore, we have two Irish lead actors throwing on their perfect American accents in another example of how easy it is for non-American actors to do our accents.

There are three main characters in Foe, but most marketing materials and headlines only showcase the two Oscar-nominated leads. The character of Terrance was originally supposed to be played by Lakeith Stanfield, a phenomenal actor who would have done an excellent job. However, he was replaced by Pierre, who is not the big name that audiences will see the movie for. However, don’t doubt Pierre. He’s sublime in a film that gives him a lot to work with. He’s a mysterious force that can be antagonistic and pull you in with his words. He’s voicing Mufasa in Disney’s upcoming The Lion King prequel film, so we can only hope his career gains traction from here. He is superb.

Foe is beautiful, meditative sci-fi film. It grounds the story in the emotions of a complex romantic relationship. The feelings both lead characters struggle with are true to any real-life couple. There’s something so resonant about a sci-fi movie where the world is in turmoil, but two people can still find happiness in each other, even if it’s finite. There is a lot of tragedy in this movie, especially in the conversations each character has with Terrance, sometimes not knowing what the other person will hear. The final half-hour is particularly astounding, as we have plot points that feel inevitable but in the best way possible. Not all of it works, but the rich, emotional layers allow this movie to be one of the best science fiction films of the year.

SCORE: 8/10

As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 8 equates to “Great.” While there are a few minor issues, this score means that the art succeeds at its goal and leaves a memorable impact.

The Creator Review: A Beautifully Mediocre Sci-Fi Movie

John David Washington as Joshua in 20th Century Studios' THE CREATOR. Photo courtesy of 20th Century Studios. © 2023 20th Century Studios. All Rights Reserved.

Artificial intelligence is at the forefront of every discussion we’ve been having in the entertainment industry. A big reason why the WGA and SAG-AFTRA went on strike is the looming threat that AI poses to their jobs. With the WGA strike reaching an end recently, it’s poetic that one of the first movies to release is The Creator, a science fiction action thriller grappling with humans and their relationship to A.I. The film has a strong start with commercials showing humans and robots coexisting peacefully until A.I. kills a million people with a nuclear warhead.

From there, we enter a visually breathtaking but ultimately familiar sci-fi outing. In an early scene, we meet Sergeant Joshua Taylor (John David Washington) and his wife, Maya Fey-Taylor (Gemma Chan). She is pregnant with his child, and they share a loving moment in bed together. However, whenever a movie starts like this, you know it won’t end well for the wife and her unborn baby. Sure enough, she is killed in an explosion caused by the A.I. war a few minutes later, fridging her and leaving Joshua a depressed, grieving man. Joshua is afflicted with what I like to call DWS (Dead Wife Syndrome), which we’ve seen in other male protagonists from 2023 films like Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Haunted Mansion.

If you or a loved one may be suffering from DWS, there is no toll-free number you can dial. All you can do is have flashbacks to the happy memories you shared together, sometimes with a POV shot in bed or, in the case of this movie (and many others), happy memories on a beach. On a serious note, the emotional core with the wife is only half-effective because we only get a sense of who she is through flashbacks, through Joshua’s perspective. However, her untimely death is what leads Joshua down a sad route where he only wants to talk to her one last time and no longer believes there is any humanity in A.I., saying it is all just programming.

Soon enough, we have our inciting event, as two people knock on his door and invite the retired hero back for one last fight. We have our call to adventure, followed by our hero’s refusal of the call. Eventually, of course, Joshua gives in, and the sci-fi action thriller begins. There’s some fantastic world-building in The Creator. It’s a lived-in world that lends itself to futuristic weapons and suits. Unfortunately, the suits and weapons don’t reinvent the wheel here, giving us stun guns and big armor but not doing anything more unique than that.

Gareth Edwards directs this film. If you’ve seen any of his previous work, like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and his 2014 Godzilla movie, you know that Edwards has a strong eye for spectacle. You feel the grand nature of everything, and he helms The Creator with a strong sense of scope. However, this screenplay, written by him and Chris Weitz, plays into every sci-fi trope you’ve seen done better in other movies. We have a scene where two characters shoot at each other, and then we cut away before seeing who landed the shot. This scene exists in movies and TV everywhere. Marvel just did this in their show Secret Invasion. Of course, this is not Edwards plagiarizing Marvel; this is a tired screenwriting trope that shows up everywhere.

We have the classic lines, “We’ve got company!” and “Call in the cavalry!” There are one or two abrupt tonal shifts between humorous and serious moments in the film, which feel jarring. A few significant revelations are not directed with the right amount of intensity and urgency they deserve. Furthermore, the action set pieces don’t feel like set pieces. There are shootouts and violence all throughout The Creator, but there isn’t a single one that stands out above the rest. Most of them are forgettable.

But let’s talk about the strongest aspect of the film: the cinematography. Greig Fraser, the brilliant cinematographer behind Rogue One, Dune, and The Batman, worked on this film for a while. He then shifted to a remote role to work on Dune: Part Two, and the rest of the shoot was carried out by cinematographer Oren Soffer in his first film production for a major studio. On a personal note, Soffer and I share an alma mater, so seeing him get a gig like this is wonderful. On an objective note, this movie is visually breathtaking. Every frame is gorgeous, with the colors popping off the screen and immersing you in a sci-fi world. This is even more impressive when you find out that the film was shot on a Sony FX3, a video camera that can be purchased at Best Buy for much less than your average RED cinema camera.

Lighting is key to making an image look good, and my unwavering praise goes to Fraser, Soffer, and gaffer Jonny Franklin for a job well done. I wish this work surrounded more than an undercooked screenplay that had me checking my watch more often than I should have. However, the clichés are baked into this premise. Joshua meets a robot child whom he names Alphie (Madeleine Yuna Voyles), and they go on a mission together where he keeps her safe. First of all, if you want to see an adaptation of the Lone Wolf and Cub story in a high-tech sci-fi world, there’s always The Mandalorian. Secondly, their relationship has a few great moments, but it ultimately does not get you on board for the emotional ride.

The Creator Review: The Final Verdict

For the most part, Alphie is a cheat code in a video game. Alphie is so powerful that she can manipulate technology remotely. She’s so powerful that she becomes a much more interesting and powerful character than our protagonist Joshua. Although Washington gets a few moments to shine comedically (the same way Christopher Nolan gave him a few moments in Tenet), he’s not fully realized beyond his grief. The lack of one clear antagonistic force in this narrative also works against this movie rather than for it. Ultimately, there’s a lot that viewers will love about The Creator. There’s a strong vision here and a mesmerizing world. But there ultimately isn’t enough here to meet the potential.

SCORE: 5/10

As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 5 equates to “Mediocre.” The positives and negatives wind up negating each other, making it a wash.

Cobweb Blu-ray Review: Lizzy Caplan & Antony Starr Horror Movie Intrigues

Cobweb blu-ray review

Cobweb didn’t quite make waves when it was released in July, but its aptly timed Blu-ray release comes right in time for the spooky season, which fits it much better than summer. Samuel Bodin’s directorial debut has a talented cast that features Lizzy Caplan, Antony Starr, and Cleopatra Coleman, alongside child actor Woody Norman, who continues to be one to really watch. With some fun ideas, a unique framing, and some cool practical effects, Cobweb winds up making an impact despite its limited resources.

“Eight-year-old Peter is plagued by a mysterious, constant tap, tap from inside his bedroom wall – a tapping that his parents insist is all in his imagination,” says the synopsis. “As Peter’s fear intensifies, he believes that his parents (Lizzy Caplan and Antony Starr) could be hiding a terrible, dangerous secret and questions their trust. And for a child, what could be more frightening than that?”

What makes Cobweb really stand out is the performances. Caplan and Starr are great as the parents, delivering creepy performances that leave the audience truly guessing if they are anxious parents, abusive psychopaths, or somewhere in between. While not particularly scary at any point, the film is always engaging, and Norman does a great job of portraying a child’s natural fear in such a situation.

The film will leave viewers with a lot to digest, especially if you engage with what you just saw and try to make sense of it. How much is to be taken literally? Could it be a child’s imagination that leads to a tragedy, and the more supernatural elements are simply used to cope? There are a lot of ways to read the events that take place, which makes this a prime candidate for rewatches. It’s one of those movies that are just as fun to discuss with friends as it is to watch.

The special features don’t really engage a ton with its interpretation — which is fine and almost ideal as we don’t need literal answers to every piece of art –, but I still would’ve loved to have heard a director’s commentary discussing what went into the movie. There are three short featurettes, though, totaling around 8.5 minutes. They provide a decent look into the practical effects that went into its final act, using a child’s perspective to tell the story, and taking advantage of primal fears, such as being afraid of the dark and spiders. While I wish there was a bit more to sink your teeth into, they do complement the film well and are worth checking out after you finish watching.

Cobweb Blu-ray Review: The Final Verdict

Cobweb winds up punching above its weight, and there’s no better time than fall to revisit it. Just as intriguing a film to engage with as it is to watch, it’s a quick and rewatchable movie that is worth discussing. While there aren’t a ton of special features, what is here is an interesting glimpse at production. While it’s not one of the year’s best horror movies, it’s still a fun watch worth your time.
