Geoff Johns says the DC universe films are 100% connected

Last week, DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson and chief creative officer Geoff Johns were interviewed by Vulture about the DC universe films and while they tried to clarify the plan moving forward for the films, there still was some confusion. The paragraph from the article in question goes as follows:

One of the centerpieces of this new, decentralized strategy is an as-yet-unnamed side label of occasional movies that are completely separate from everything else, set entirely outside the cinematic universe. Total stand-alones based on good ideas from big-name filmmakers. Movies that are just movies, not components of a larger piece of clockwork. The first one they’re talking about is a solo outing about supervillain the Joker, set to be directed and co-written by The Hangover and War Dogs alumnus Todd Phillips. Johns says they’ll be announcing the name of of this side label “soon-ish.”

Sites, such as ours, took this to mean that there will be the main DC universe films, such as the upcoming Justice League, Aquaman, Wonder Woman 2, and so on, and there will also be a completely separate line of movies that will have nothing to do with those, such as the above-mentioned, Todd Phillips-directed Joker origin movie, to be produced to be produced by Martin Scorsese and Phillips.

While we still think that is the case, a fan asked Johns the following on Twitter: “Cinematic universe has only begun and you are already pulling the rug out from under it? Please keep the universe connected!”

Here’s Johns’ response:

Is he just talking about the main DC universe films or also this separate side label? We still don’t really know until they reveal their full plan post-Justice League. What are you hoping for? Do you want all the films to connect in some way, even if it’s just a little? Or do you think there should be the main DC universe films and then the side label that has nothing to do with the main films at all? Let us know your thoughts.

Luc Besson has written the Lucy sequel script

Last Wednesday, EuropaCorp announced (via Variety) that the company will be scaling back its production after posting record losses of $135 million during the last financial year. Their last project, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, has grossed $223 million worldwide ($40 million domestic and $182.7 million internationally). The problem was its large $177.2 million budget, however.

The company will continue focusing on making action thrillers and sci-fi films along the lines of Taken, Lucy, The Professional and The Fifth Element, but they will produce less of them and EuropaCorp’s Luc Besson will now have more oversight over each of them. The projects will carry a budget of about $25 to $35 million per film.

One of those projects is the Lucy sequel, starring Scarlett Johansson, which EuropaCorp says Luc Besson has already written the script for. The 2014 release was made for $40 million and grossed $463.4 million worldwide ($126.7 million domestic and $336.7 million internationally). Written and directed by Besson, Lucy is an action-thriller that tracks a woman (Johansson) accidentally caught in a dark deal who turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic. The film also stars Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman.

Before the Lucy sequel happens, Besson’s next movie will be an English-language action thriller with a female lead, budgeted in the $30 million range. The film, based on an original idea and written by Besson, will start shooting next month.

Saturday Night Live premiere highlights

Saturday Night Live kicked off its 43rd Season on Saturday, September 30 with Blade Runner 2049 star Ryan Gosling as the host and musical guest Jay-Z, who made his fourth appearance on the show. NBC has now released Saturday Night Live premiere highlights, which you can watch below. They include “The Chaos President” cold open, Ryan Gosling’s jazz monologue, and much more.

Next week’s host will be Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot, who will be making her first SNL appearance. Gadot will next co-star in the highly-anticipated Justice League, arriving in theaters November 17. Joining Gadot will be Grammy-, Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning artist Sam Smith, marking his second visit to SNL as musical guest.

Kumail Nanjiani will host the season’s third show on Oct. 14, marking his debut. Nanjiani stars as Dinesh Chugtai in HBO’s Silicon Valley and most recently wrote and starred in the critically-acclaimed film The Big Sick. Grammy Award-winning artist P!nk will join Nanjiani for the season’s third episode as musical guest. Her seventh studio album, “Beautiful Trauma,” is due out Oct. 13. P!nk was recently honored at the MTV VMAs with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award in August.

Arrow stars Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen, David Ramsey as John Diggle, Willa Holland as Thea Queen, Emily Bett Rickards as Felicity Smoak, John Barrowman as Malcom Merlyn, with Paul Blackthorne as Detective Lance. Manu Bennett is back as Slade Wilson, aka Deathstroke, and his son, Joe Wilson, will be played by Liam Hall. Juliana Harkavy is playing Dinah Drake, David Nykl portrays Anatoly Knyazev, Michael Emerson is playing a mystery character, and Kirk Acevedo stars as Ricardo Diaz, aka Richard Dragon.

Based on the DC characters, the series is executive produced by Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim, Andrew Kreisberg, Wendy Mericle and Sarah Schechter. Arrow is produced by Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television.

Arrow, which formerly aired Wednesday nights at 8:00pm ET/PT on The CW, will move to Thursday nights at 9:00pm ET/PT when Season 6 premieres October 12.
