Netflix has released a brand new Jupiter’s Legacy teaser for their newest superhero series adaptation of Mark Millar and Frank Quitely’s comic book series, giving us our first official look at the series’ main characters in their super suits. Starring Josh Duhamel, the series is scheduled to make its debut on May 7, 2021. Check out the video in the player below!

Jupiter’s Legacy is a multigenerational drama that follows the world’s first generation of superheroes, who received their powers in the 1930s. In the present day, they’re the revered elder guard, but their superpowered children struggle to live up to the legendary feats of their parents.

The series will star Josh Duhamel (Transformers) as Sheldon Sampson/The Utopian, Ben Daniels as Walter Sampson/Brainwave, Leslie Bibb as Grace Sampson/Lady Liberty, Elena Kampouris as Chloe Sampson, Andrew Horton as Brandon Sampson/Paragon, Mike Wade as Fitz Small and Matt Lanter as George Hutchene/Skyfox.

The project was created and executive produced by Steven S. DeKnight, best known for showrunning Daredevil’s inaugural season. He was previously attached to serve as the showrunner. However, due to creative differences, he exited the series with Sang Kyu Kim taking over as the showrunner.  Additionally, Kim will executive produce the series alongside Millar, Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, and Dan McDermott.

The Jupiter’s Legacy comic series was first published by Image Comics in 2013. It followed The Utopian and Lady Liberty, who are the costumed aliases of Sheldon and Grace Sampson. After venturing to a mysterious island with a handful of their friends in 1932, they gained superhuman abilities and established themselves as the first generation of superheroes. They soon formed the Union of Justice. Years later, Sheldon and Grace had two children, Chloe and Brandon, who inherited their own set of powers. However, Chloe and Brandon also developed a cynical attitude toward superheroes and struggled to find their places in the shadow of their famous parents.

Tom & Jerry Scores Second-Best Opening Weekend During Pandemic

Tom & Jerry Scores Second-Best Opening Weekend During Pandemic

According to Deadline, Warner Bros.’ day and date release of Tom & Jerry pulled in $13.7M at 2,475 theaters, which was enough to put it at No. 2 on the list of best openings during the pandemic. Wonder Woman 1984’s $16.4M opening in December currently holds the crown, but with more theaters opening it’s likely we’ll see a steady increase in box office receipts. Globally, Tom & Jerry collected $38.8M, which is pretty good considering the current situation and also considering the Tim Story-directed family pic released simultaneously on HBO Max.

Critics weren’t too kind to the latest big-screen Tom & Jerry feature with only 25% of critics giving the film a positive review. Audiences, however, were much kinder and awarded the film an 82% on RT out of 250+ reviews and an A- Cinemascore. The hope, per Deadline, is that Tom & Jerry will enjoy a similar run to that of The Croods: A New Age, which crossed $52.3M this week in the United States and $156M worldwide.

Rounding out the Top 5 were holdovers The Little Things with $925K ($12.9M total) in its fifth weekend, Wonder Woman 1984 with $710K ($43.6M total) in Week 10 and The Marksman with $700K ($12.3M total) in Week 7.

INTERNATIONAL

The big movie to see over the weekend for international audiences was the time travel comedy Hi Mom, which earned 345M ($53.2M) over the weekend to lift its total to a staggering 4.82B RMB ($744M) making it the No. 3 biggest title ever in the Middle Kingdom. Maoyan is predicting an RMB 5.21B ($804M) finish for Hi Mom which would move it up to the No. 2 all-time slot.

Detective Chinatown 3 earned another RMB 128M ($19.8M) to bring its total to a colossal RMB 4.32B ($667M). That total propels DC3 into the Top 5 all-time list, bumping off Avengers: Endgame. It also means there are no U.S. titles on China’s all-time list.

IMAX

DC3 climbed to $35M at the Imax box office, 5.2% of the movie’s $667M China box office total to-date and is on pace to surpass 2019’s NE ZHA ($35.2M) to become the 2nd highest grossing local language title ever released in Imax.

Alibaba’s A Writer’s Odyssey earned $1.6M at the Imax box office, 13% of the nationwide weekend total for the movie, raising its cume to $7.8M, nearly 6% of the $139M nationwide cume.

Aniplex/Toho’s Demon Slayer also added $302K, lifting its Imax total to $27M.

This weekend finds Lionsgate’s Chaos Walking and Disney’s Raya & The Last Dragon releasing across the Imax global network.

Zack Snyder Releases New Justice League Mother Box Trailer

Zack Snyder Releases New Justice League Mother Box Trailer

We’re just weeks away from the HBO Max release of the highly anticipated Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which is a weird thing to write all things considered. Yet, here we are! And to keep the excitement levels maxed out, Snyder unveiled a new “Mother Box” trailer during IGN Fan Fest 2021. Check it out below!

RELATED: CS Soapbox: Zack Snyder’s Justice League is Already Better Than 2017’s

Justice League will be hitting HBO Max solely as a four-hour movie on March 18. It was originally revealed at DC FanDome that the movie will release on HBO Max in 2021 by being broken up into four one-hour parts that will also be released as one four-hour film, but will now solely be released as a one-off film instead of the four-part series. Snyder also revealed that there will be no after-credits scenes.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League has reportedly cost around $70 million in order to properly finish the editing and visual effects of the director’s original vision, as well as the additional photography. The original post-production crew is also expected to return along with the cast members to record additional dialogue for the cut.

Fueled by the hero’s restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Justice League sees Bruce Wayne enlist the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg, and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League, which features a screenplay from Chris Terrio from a story by Snyder and Terrio, stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, with J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.

RELATED: Zack Snyder’s Justice League Trailer: The Bell’s Been Rung

Released in November 2017, the film earned mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, praising the action and performances from Gadot and Miller while criticizing every other aspect of the film, namely the inconsistent tone that many fault Joss Whedon (The Avengers) for after taking over directorial duties from Snyder. With a large budget of $300 million and a break-even point of $750 million, the film is considered a box office bomb having grossed only $658 million.

The 2021 Golden Globes Winners List!

The 2021 Golden Globes Winners List!

The 78th annual Golden Globes aired last night with long-time collaborators Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting the event from different sides of the country. Like other award shows during this ongoing pandemic, the 2021 Golden Globes featured a mix of virtual and in-person appearances.

This year’s winners list both came with surprising and expected wins as the competition in most major categories proved to be strong and difficult to predict. The Golden Globes made history last night with Nomadland director Chloe Zhao winning her first Golden Globe for Best Director – Motion Picture which makes her the first Asian woman to win the coveted award as well as the second woman filmmaker to claim it over 30 years since Barbra Streisand’s groundbreaking win in 1983.

Red Sonja: Tasha Huo to Write Fantasy Adaptation With Director Joey Soloway

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Tasha Huo will pen Millennium’s fantasy adaptation of Red Sonja with director Joey Soloway, based on the comic book heroine from the 1970s. Huo will be acting as showrunner and executive producer on Netflix’s upcoming animated Tomb Raider series.

“I have loved Red Sonja forever and I feel so honored to help shepherd her story and start this cinematic journey. There could not be a greater moment in our world for Red Sonja’s ways of wielding power and her connection with nature and our planet,” said Soloway. “She is an ancient heroine with an epic calling, and translating that to the screen is a dream come true for me as a filmmaker. I can’t wait to collaborate with Tasha on this vision.”

Added Millennium co-president Jonathan Younger: “We’re very excited to be bringing Red Sonja to the market and the world. This has been a long time coming. Having Joey Soloway at the helm of this feminist icon franchise is the perfect recipe for a magical adventure, which is exactly what the world needs today.”

Pick up your copy of the original comic book here!

Mark Canton (300, Power) and Courtney Solomon (After) will produce along with Christa Campbell and Lati Grobman on behalf of Campbell Grobman Films. Andrea Sperling will also produce on behalf of Topple, with Millennium’s Yariv Lerner, Jeffrey Greenstein, Younger, Les Weldon, Joe Gatta, and Tanner Mobley also producing. Millennium’s Avi Lerner, Boaz Davidson, and Trevor Short will also executive produce along with Dorothy Canton and Luke Lieberman.

Casting on Red Sonja is expected to begin immediately.

Red Sonja is a sword-and-sorcery character with the comics created by Robert E. Howard, writer Roy Thomas, and artist Barry Windsor Smith for Marvel Comics in 1973. The comics are still being published today through Dynamite Entertainment.

Stuck inside? Don’t know what to watch/read/play/listen to? ComingSoon.net has got you covered. In this week’s CS Recommends our staff kicks off gives you solid tips on the best media to consume during your downtime, including groundbreaking anime series Cowboy Bebop and more! Check out our picks below!

MAX EVRY’S RECOMMEND: Mandy Merch from Legion M

Click here to purchase the merch!

One of the most memorable indie features in forever was Panos Cosmatos’ Mandy, a dreamlike revenge story in which Nicolas Cage gives an all-timer performance for the ages. Whether you loved seeing cage do coke off a shard of glass or battle motorcycle mutants in a quarry, Mandy is just one of those movies that never leaves you once you experience it. Now the folks at Legion M have several cool pieces of merch to celebrate the film, including a t-shirt with Cage’s blood-smeared face, a sweater with Cage holding his giant axe, and a sweet pin. Check out all that and more at their site!

KYLIE HEMMERT’S RECOMMEND: Dexter

Click here to purchase the complete series!

With Showtime’s upcoming 10-episode revival of the award-winning series Dexter currently in development, now is the perfect time to revisit, or discover for the first time, one of the best series ever made (no matter how you feel about the ending, it does not change how incredible the series was as a whole — though, admittedly, nothing quite beats those early seasons). Michael C. Hall effortlessly plays Dexter Morgan, a serial killer who specifically targets other serial killers while also working as a blood splatter analyst for the Miami Police Department. Surrounded by a fantastic ensemble cast, Hall breathes life into one of television’s most fascinating characters as the show explores our dark passengers, all the while perfectly balancing dark humor with its heavier themes.

GRANT HERMANNS’ RECOMMEND: Cowboy Bebop

Click here to purchase the complete series!

Though we may still be an unknown ways away from the John Cho-led live-action iteration, there is literally never a bad time to dive into the blues and jazz-infused sci-fi world of the Keiko Nobumoto-penned anime Cowboy Bebop. Centered on the lives of the bounty hunting group aboard the titular craft, the series covers nearly every genre from sci-fi to western to noir to comedy and existential ennui, balancing every tone with precision and delivering some of the most captivating and perfectly-paced adventures with gorgeous animation that is still stunning 23 years later and one of the best soundtracks and theme songs of anything in existence. Whether you’re a major anime fan or looking for shows to get into the genre, this is by far one of the best out there.

MAGGIE DELA PAZ’S RECOMMEND: Dead Poets Society (1989)

Starring Ethan Hawke and the late Robin Williams, the film tells the story of a group of young men at an elite prep school. They secretly formed their own poetry club called the Dead Poets Society after getting inspired by their new English teacher, John Keating. Through Keating’s eccentric teaching methods, he was able to encourage them to make their lives worth living without conforming to any societal norms. However, it is always easier said than done as the boys will soon realize how difficult it is to really “Seize the day” when outside forces always tend to suppress their views and dreams.

This 1989 coming-of-age drama is unarguably one of the best in its genre as it brilliantly delivers a relatable and charming storyline that will somehow break your heart. In addition to its Oscar-winning screenplay, the film also most importantly featured one of the most memorable performances by Williams as well as a preview into the immense talent of then-rising star Ethan Hawke. If you’re a fan of the coming-of-age genre like me, I highly-recommend you to check out or revisit this classic gem.

JEFF AMES’ RECOMMEND: Black Hawk Down

Is Black Hawk Down the greatest war film ever made? That’s debatable, but few films have effectively captured the chaos and violence of combat quite like Ridley Scott’s powerful 2001 drama. Exquisitely shot and featuring a handful of great performances from the likes of Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor, Eric Bana and Sam Shepard, Black Hawk Down is about as anti-war as a film can get, but also stands as a powerful tribute to all the brave soldiers who give their lives for each other and their country when duty calls. Plus, Hans Zimmer’s score is awesome.

Side note: it’s quite astounding that Ridley Scott failed to pick up an Oscar for his work here. The man lost to Ron Howard for A Beautiful Mind, which, I can only surmise, occurred because voters were split on Scott, Peter Jackson (for Lord of the Rings) and David Lynch (Mulholland Drive). What a debacle, but also, that’s a damned good pool of directors!

ComingSoon.net recommends all readers comply with CDC guidelines and remain as isolated as possible during this urgent time.
