Day of the Dead Series Given 10 Episode Order by SyFy

Day of the Dead series given 10 episode order by SyFy

According to Deadline, SyFy has given a 10-episode order for a Day of the Dead series, based on George Romero’s 1985 film of the same name. The series is written by Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas (The Banana Splits Movie), who will also act as showrunners.

RELATED: Gruesome Galleries: George A. Romero’s Day of the Dead

Romero’s film was the third in his six-film Dead series, which began with Night of the Living Dead in 1968 then continued with 1978’s Dawn of the Dead, 2005’s Land of the Dead, 2007’s Diary of the Dead and 2009’s Survival of the Dead. Day of the Dead grossed $34 million worldwide upon its release, and followed a group of scientists in the wake of a zombie plague working in an underground bunker trying to find a cure to the pandemic.

The new series for SyFy is described as “the intense story of six strangers trying to survive the first 24 hours of an undead invasion.” This story foundation appears to bear little resemblance to the plot of the Romero film, and sounds more like a zombiefied take on the 24 formula.

Day of the Dead will be produced by Stan Spry, Jeff Holland, Drew Brown for Cartel Entertainment (Creepshow), alongside Robert Dudelson, James Dudelson and Jordan Kizwani from HiTide Studios.

A prequel to the film (with no involvement from the original creators) titled Day of the Dead 2: Contagium was released in 2005, followed closely by a very loose remake titled Day of the Dead in 2008. Another remake titled Day of the Dead: Bloodline was released in 2018. All three of these films were panned and are not considered cannon with Romero’s cycle.

Liev Schreiber and Susie Abromeit Join Will Smith in King Richard

Liev Schreiber and Susie Abromeit Join Will Smith in King Richard

According to Deadline, Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan) and Susie Abromeit (Jessica Jones) have joined the cast of King Richard, the upcoming Venus & Serena Williams biopic featuring Will Smith (Aladdin) as the tennis stars’ father Richard Williams. Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead) also stars, whilst Saniyya Sidney (Fences) and Demi Singleton (Godfather of Harlem) will portray the aforementioned sisters.

Schreiber will play real-life tennis coach Paul Cohen, who worked with well-known tennis legends such as John McEnroe and Pete Sampras. Bromeit will play New York Times reporter Robin Finn.

Williams, who had no tennis background, overcame tremendous hardship, skepticism, and his own troubled past to raise two of the game’s greatest players. When his daughters were around the age of four, Richard Williams drew up a 78-page plan for their professional tennis careers. He began giving them tennis lessons and the girls learned the game on cracked, weedy public courts in Compton, reportedly after their father brawled with young toughs who were not fans of the sport and would not make way. The Williams sisters went on to become two of the greatest female players in tennis history, with Serena arguably the best ever, with 23 Grand Slam tournament wins. Venus Williams has won seven Grand Slam titles.

The sisters began to assert themselves as Serena won the US Open in 1999 and Venus beat Lindsay Davenport to win the 2000 Wimbledon title. After that victory, Richard shouted “Straight Outta Compton!” (in reference to a song by N.W.A based on that area in Los Angeles) and jumped over the NBC broadcasting booth, catching Chris Evert by surprise and performing a triumphant dance.

Reinaldo Marcus Green (Monsters and Men) will direct the pic. Tim White and Trevor Write (The PostWind RiverIngrid Goes West) will produce King Richard via their Star Thrower Entertainment banner. Smith will also produce through his Overbrook Entertainment banner. Allan Mandelbaum and Caleeb Pinkett will serve as executive producers with Mary Solomon and Rick Rickertsen co-producing.

King Richard is set to hit theaters on November 25, 2020.

Kevin Feige is Chinnos in The Simpsons’ Avengers Spoof

Kevin Feige is Chinnos in The Simpsons’ Avengers Spoof

For well over a decade, Kevin Feige has been Marvel Studios’ man behind the curtain. He constructed the MCU from behind the scenes while leaving the performance work to the professionals. But this weekend, Feige will finally get to try his hand at acting. Variety has revealed the first look at the Marvel Studios chief’s voiceover role on the next episode of The Simpsons.

The episode is called “Bart the Bad Guy,” and it will parody the MCU and its devoted fanbase. After Bart mistakenly catches an early screening of the new film in the mega-popular Vindicator franchise, he uses his newfound spoiler-heavy knowledge to blackmail a pair of Hollywood executives. These industry bigwigs will be voiced by Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo. Their characters desperately try to prevent Bart (AKA “Spoiler Boy”) from leaking plot details before the film is released.

However, it sounds like Feige is going to steal the entire episode. He will provide the voice of the movie’s villain, Chinnos, an obvious send-up of Josh Brolin’s Thanos. But instead of an Infinity Gauntlet, Chinnos will bring destruction using the “Doomsday app” on his phone. The latest clip shows the team of superheroes attempting to halt Chinnos’ machinations in a scene that’s also reminiscent of the battle on Titan in Avengers: Infinity War. Unfortunately, they can’t get past his force field.

Feige and the Russos won’t be the only Marvel vets appearing in the episode. Cobie Smulders, will also lend her voice to a heroine named Hydrangea. Additionally, Smulders’ husband and occasional Marvel writer, Taran Killam, will provide the voice of Airshot, another hero.

“Bart the Bad Guy” airs on Sunday, March 1 on Fox. You can check out the newest teaser below.
