First time director James Madigan will helm The Rats of NIMH movie

It was announced nearly two years ago that MGM had secured the rights to develop a new theatrical take on author Robert C. O’Brien‘s enduring children’s classic, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. Today, Variety reports that the film — which is being developed as a CGI and live action hybrid — has brought aboard first time director James Madigan. Madigan recently completed work as second unit director on the upcoming prehistoric shark thriller Meg. It also looks like the new film version with drop the Mrs. Frisby from the title and will simply be known as The Rats of NIMH.

Published in 1971 with accompanying illustrations by Zena Bernstein, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH follows the titular Mrs. Frisby, a recently-widowed field mouse who faces impossible odds in the quest to move her family before a farmer’s plow comes through. The text was famously adapted as an animated film, The Secret of NIMH, by Don Bluth in 1982.

MGM has set Ice Age 5 scribe Michael Berg to script the new film, which has Daniel Bobker and Ehren Kruger are producing.

O’Brien authored a sequel to his original book, Racso and the Rats of NIMH, which was published in 1986. R-T, Margaret, and the Rats of NIMH, a third book, was written in 1990 by O’Brien’s daughter, Jane Leslie Conly. The animated film version, meanwhile, received its own direct to video sequel in 1998 with The Secret of NIMH 2: Timmy to the Rescue.

How do you feel about a new big screen version of Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH? Is there anyone you’d like to see lend their voices to the film? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Inner City will follow Washington as a Los Angeles based legal researcher. Following the death of his mentor, the lawyer is approached by a ruthless law firm that wants his help. Colin Farrell will play the slick lawyer that recruits Washington’s character.

Dan Gilroy earned himself an Academy Award nomination for his original Nightcrawler screenplay. Prior to sitting in the director’s chair on the 2014 thriller, Gilroy made a name for himself as a screenwriter, scripting films like Freejack, The Fall and The Bourne Legacy.

Johnny Knoxville has a new project lined up today as The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the Jackass star and producer is set to take on Action Park, a new comedy feature from Paramount Pictures and Knoxville’s own Dickhouse Pictures. Likely inspired by Vernon, New Jersey’s infamous real life Action Park, the Action Park imagines the disastrous consequences of a theme park run by Knoxville and his friends. Tim Kirkby, who has primarily worked on the small screen directing shows like Veep, Brockmire and Man Seeking Woman, will take the director’s chair on Action Park.

Knoxville is no stranger to working with Paramount. The studio released all three Jackass films as well as the 2013 release Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa. Knoxville also lent his voice to Leonardo in the studio’s 2014 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He did not, however, reprise the role for last summer’s followup, Out of the Shadows. Most recently, Knoxville teamed with Jackie Chan for last year’s action comedy Skiptrace.

Collectively, the four Jackass theaterical releases have brought in more than $487 million at the worldwide box office.

Action Park will begin production in South Africa this March.

Nicole Kidman is in talks to play Aquaman’s mother, Atlanna, in the upcoming James Wan film

As the DC Comics adaptation swims toward production, Aquaman casting updates are breaking left and right. On the heels of a report this morning that sees The Get Down‘s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II up for the villainous Black Manta role, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Nicole Kidman has entered talks to play Aquaman’s mother, Atlanna. Both stars would join a lineup that currently includes Jason Momoa, Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson and Willem Dafoe.

Aquaman is set to feature the return of Momoa in the title role. Aquaman made a brief debut as the title character in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He’s expected to play a much larger role in the forthcoming Justice League, set to hit theaters November 17, 2017. The Zack Snyder film is also expected to introduce Heard as Mera, Queen of Atlantis.

While the character’s origins have shifted a bit over the years Atlanna made her comic book debut in a flashback tale in 1959’s Adventure Comics #260. Initially, Atlanna — an Atlantean who fell in love with a human, Tom Curry — was depicted as having died before Aquaman came into prominence as a hero. In the modern New 52 continuity, however, Atlanna is a significantly more prominent character and faked her death in an effort to escape Atlantis’ oppressive rule.

Aquaman is expected to begin shooting in April.
