Kicking off the week is the based-on-a-true-story heist comedy Masterminds, starring Zach Galifianakis, Jason Sudeikis, Kristen Wiig and Owen Wilson. We’ve got an exclusive look at the Blu-ray’s special features and, in the player below, you can learn a bit about the real story behind the film.
January 31 also brings to Blu-ray recent big screen films like the Tom Cruise action franchise sequel Jack Reacher: Never Go Back and Disney’s true chess biopic Queen of Katwe, starring Lupita Nyong’o. There’s also a double feature of Tyler Perry with both Boo! A Madea Halloween and the filmed stage play Madea on the Run.
A pair of interesting music docs hit DVD only January 31. Jim Jarmusch (Paterson, Only Lovers Left Alive) directs Gimme Danger, an intimate look at the history of Iggy and the Stooges. Meanwhile, director Brendan Toller’s Danny Says delivers a look at the same band’s legendary manager, Danny Fields.
Walt Disney Animation‘s 1940 Pinocchio (the studio’s second feature length animated film) gets a Signature Edition Blu-ray January 31. In celebration of the release, CS got to go behind the scenes at Disney’s Animation Research Library. Click here to check out the full video!
Another family friendly release arrives in Barbie: Video Game Hero, the latest home video feature based on the iconic Mattel doll.
This week, Warner Archive gives the HD treatment to director Vincente Minnelli’s 1960 musical Bells Are Ringing. Judy Holliday and Dean Martin headline the Broadway adaptation, available on Blu-ray for the first time ever.
January 31 is also a great week for horror tiles. Lionsgate’s Vestron Video line gets a pair of new additions with Ken Russell’s 1988 Bram Stoker adaptation Lair of the White Worm and Bob Balaban’s 1989 stylized nostalgia-drive horror comedy Parents. Meanwhile, Shout Factory‘s Scream Factory label continues with Collector’s Edition of both 1986’s Poltergeist II: The Other Side and its followup, 1988’s Poltergeist III.
Small screen releases this week include the second season of HBO‘s Dwayne Johnson-led comedy drama Ballers, the first season of the British drama Victoria (starring Jenna Coleman) and, on DVD only, a re-release of the fourth Mystery Science Theater 3000 set, reissuing the episodes Girl in Gold Boots, Hamlet, Overdrawn at the Memory Bank and Space Mutiny. Also hitting DVD only January 31 is the long-lost Doctor Who episode The Power of the Daleks.
Key Digital HD titles coming home January 31 include director Ben Younger’s intense boxer biopic Bleed for This (starring Miles Teller), Kelly Fremon Craig’s impressive coming-of-age comedy drama The Edge of 17 (starring Hailee Steinfeld), Denis Villenueve’s acclaimed science fiction tale Arrival (currently nominated for eight Academy Awards), Ang Lee’s dramatic spectacle Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk and writer and director Kim Nguyen’s Two Lovers and Bear (starring Tatiana Maslany and Dane DeHaan).
