The Warners have escaped again and a new Animaniacs series is on the way!
It’s been nearly a century since the creation of the cartoon Warner Brothers (and their sister, Dot) in 1930s Hollywood. At least, that’s the faux narrative at the heart of Animaniacs, the postmodern cartoon series that became a hit in the mid 1990s.

“The Warners’ films, which made absolutely no sense, were locked away in the studio vault, never to be released,” proclaims the series’ “vintage” newsreel, detailing the characters’ origins. “As for the Warners themselves, who made even less sense, they were locked away in the studio water tower, also never to be released. Publicly, the studio has disavowed any knowledge of the Warners’ existence, to this very day — when the Warners escaped!”
That was two decades ago, but it now it appears that Yakko, Wakko, and Dot have once again freed themselves from their water tower as IndieWire reports that a new Animaniacs series is in development!
Created by Tom Ruegger and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Animaniacs ran for 99 episodes and one feature length film, Wakko’s Wish. Although the Warners were the show’s general focus, Animaniacs functioned as sort of cartoon anthology series. Two of the most popular characters were later spun off into a Pinky and the Brain series, which was later crossed over with Tiny Toon Adventures for Pinky, Elmyra & the Brain. Among the other popular Animaniacs characters were Buttons and Mindy, Rita and Runt, Slappy Squirrel, Hello Nurse, Chicken Boo and The Goodfeathers with a voice cast that includes Jess Harnell, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, Rob Paulsen and Sherri Stoner.
