Score: New documentary discusses the art of film scoring with some of cinema’s top composers
Music is the spine of almost all cinema, radically transforming an image and dictating our emotional response. And yet, so few audiences actually pay attention to its essential presence. That’s why director Matt Schrader’s new documentary Score: A Film Music Documentary is so important. The movie assembles some of contemporary film’s most revered music makers, from Danny Elfman (Batman, Justice League), Hans Zimmer (The Dark Knight), Quincy Jones (In the Heat of the Night), Trent Reznor (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) and many more to discuss their respective processes and identify what makes music in the movies matter.
One of the central composers profiled in the film is Bear McCreary, the maestro who has been making the music for AMC’s smash hit zombie series The Walking Dead for 8 years as well as providing the sounds that back films like The Boy, Colossal and 10 Cloverfield Lane. To honor the theatrical release of Score: A Film Music Documnetary, McCreary will be attending the special June 17th screening at the Quad Cinemas in NYC at 7:15pm to introduce the film and conduct and audience Q&A post-screening. We have three pairs of tickets to giveaway for this event. To win, email chris.alexander@shocktillyoudrop.com with the words “I Want to Score” in the subject line.
Synopsis: What makes a film score unforgettable? Score: A Film Music Documentary brings Hollywood’s elite composers together to give viewers a privileged look inside the musical challenges and creative secrecy of the world’s most international music genre: the film score. A film composer is a musical scientist of sorts, and the influence they have to complement a film and garner powerful reactions from global audiences can be a daunting task to take on. The documentary contains interviews with dozens of film composers who discuss their craft and the magic of film music while exploring the making of the most iconic and beloved scores in history: “James Bond”, “Star Wars,” “Indiana Jones,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Titanic,” “The Social Network,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and “Psycho.”
