Preacher Episode 2.08 Annotations: Someone doesn’t belong in Hell

Welcome back brothers and sisters to our weekly feature, the Preacher Book Club, where we talk about the latest episode of AMC‘s Preacher, dissecting the episode at hand, annotating the changes made from the Garth Ennis/Steve Dillon comic book series and attempting to predict about what will be coming next. So let’s dive right into our thoughts and annotations on Preacher Episode 2.08!

Back in Hell

As we’ve previously said, all this Hell business isn’t in the original comics, but it is a nice departure and a fun way to pad out the world of the show. Also it keeps Arseface in the story at least somewhat, so I’m all for that. I’m a little surprised there seems to be little traction on it though, but the scene with “Jesse” seems to be an indicator that it’s at least moving toward… something.

1946

Cassidy visiting baby Denis is a nice sequence, and though it’s not from the source material at all, we do get to see Cassidy in one of his trademark looks. He rocks that hat.

Hoover and Featherstone

We previously saw these two Grail agents, but now they’re living down the hall from Jesse and company in a rather interesting diversion. In the comics, the pair obviously keep tabs on Jesse, though they usually go about it from a distance, so this isn’t completely out of the ordinary. Their interaction, however, is pretty limited to only two or three scenes at most. Featherstone cultivating a relationship with Tulip seems to be setting up an instance for them to kidnap her to get to Jesse, which does happen in the comics but they end up nabbing Cassidy instead of Tulip.

All the other teases with The Grail being right under Jesse’s nose and all around him while he’s oblivious are pretty great, though perhaps more in keeping with the less-observant TV show version of the character than the one from the source material.

“It’s all I got.”

The path to locating God is moving at a snails pace in the TV series and while trouble continues to find Jesse, it’s not at the rate of the comic. I wouldn’t mind seeing it sped up some, or at least start teasing some of the even wilder characters we’ll run into, especially his mother’s family.

Eugene and Tracy

Eugene is put in a different kind of simulator in Hell where he sees things play out in a total different way that seem nice at first, but steer into much, much worse. The grin that Jesse gives him right before he shoots himself might be one of the funniest bits in the episode.

Cassidy and Denis

Once again Cassidy considers turning his son into a vampire, something that he didn’t do to anyone in the comic books and a decision that (should he carry it out) he’ll probably have to clean up by the end of the season.
