IT tops American Made and Kingsman for box office win

After dropping down to second place last week, New Line Cinema‘s IT was back on top this weekend with an estimated $17.3 million, to bring its domestic total to $291 million after four weeks. Internationally, the hit film added another $35.6 million on 9,865 screens in 64 markets. The overseas total has now reached $262 million and the worldwide sum is at a phenomenal $553.1 million. Directed by Andrés Muschietti, IT cost just $35 million to make and stars Bill Skarsgård as the story’s central villain, Pennywise the clown, as well as Jaeden Lieberher, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Wyatt Oleff, Chosen Jacobs, Jack Dylan Grazer and Nicholas Hamilton. The sequel has been set for a September 6, 2019 release.

The race for second place was too close to call, as Universal PicturesAmerican Made and 20th Century Fox‘s Kingsman: The Golden Circle both earned an estimated $17 million.

American Made, directed by Doug Liman and starring Tom Cruise, opened in 3,024 theaters and averaged $5,627 per theater. Made for about $50 million, the film received a B+ CinemaScore from audiences. Internationally, the film started opening in late August and has collected $64.7 million so far, for a worldwide total of $81.7 million. The movie still has to open in Russia and the Ukraine on October 12, Japan on October 21, and Argentina on November 2.

With the $17 million second weekend, Kingsman: The Golden Circle has now grossed $66.7 million domestically. Made for about $104 million, the Matthew Vaughn-directed sequel stars Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Taron Egerton, Mark Strong, Halle Berry, Sir Elton John, Channing Tatum, and Jeff Bridges.

Coming in at fourth was Warner Bros. Pictures’ The LEGO Ninjago Movie, which added $12 million and has grossed $35.6 million after two weeks domestically. Internationally, the film collected $10.6 million from 10,100 screens and has now earned $22.7 million overseas. That’s a worldwide total of $58.3 million so far. The LEGO Ninjago Movie features the voices of Dave Franco, Justin Theroux, Fred Armisen, Abbi Jacobson, Olivia Munn, Kumail Nanjiani, Michael Pena, Zach Woods, and Jackie Chan.

Rounding out the top five was newcomer Flatliners (Sony Pictures), but the film was DOA with just $6.7 million from 2,552 locations, an average of $2,625 per location. Receiving a B- CinemaScore, the movie cost $19 million to make. Directed by Niels Arden Oplev, Flatliners stars Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton and Kiersey Clemons. The 1990 original Flatliners grossed $61.5 million domestically.
