The Revenant’s Mark L. Smith is set to script Quentin Tarantino’s R-rated Star Trek movie
After speculation over a number of writers, The Revenant‘s Mark L. Smith has been chosen to pen the upcoming R-rated Star Trek movie from Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction, The Hateful Eight), according to Deadline. According to the site, Tarantino created a writer’s room last month with Smith, Lindsey Beer, Drew Pearce and Megan Amram. Smith has been considered the frontrunner for the job.
Star Trek, the first film in the rebooted franchise based on Star Trek, created by Gene Roddenberry, earned more than $380 million worldwide in 2009. The second installment, Star Trek Into Darkness, earned more than $460 million worldwide when it opened in May 2013. The series’ third film, Star Trek Beyond, which opened on July 22, 2016 made over $343 million worldwide.
Tarantino has never taken on a franchise in the film world before. His next film, which is set around the Charles Manson murders, is set at Sony and was given an August 2019 release date, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the murder of Sharon Tate and four others on August 9, 1969. The film is currently being called #9. Sources also have compared the film to Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction while noting it will have a budget in the range of Django Unchained, which had a $100-million budget but grossed over $425 million at the global box office.
