Hobbs and Shaw: Jason Statham on the tone of Fast and Furious spin-off
Speaking with Collider, actor Jason Statham (The Meg) opened up about working with director David Leitch (Deadpool 2) on the upcoming Hobbs and Shaw, the first spin-off from the Fast & Furious franchise. The film will follow Dwayne Johnson’s Diplomatic Security Service agent Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham’s assassin Deckard Shaw. Here’s what Statham said about working with Leitch.
“We’re trying to do something that isn’t so goofy though. I know the last time she slapped me around the face and we got this little … We don’t want to take it too seriously. I’m not the director so I’m not the one controlling the tone of the movie but we want to have some meaningful stuff in it as well as the fun. At the end of the day, we want to have the laughs. We want to tear each other apart. We want to enjoy it. This has to be a ride. I guess you’ve got to have the whole package. I think Dave’s aiming for that. He wants to have the raucous laughs, the funny shit, the intense action and the great drama and the meaningful stuff. Dwayne’s got his relationship with his mother and the daughter. There’s loads of good stuff in it. I’m fucking excited.”
The spin-off features a script from Chris Morgan, who has worked on the franchise since Tokyo Drift in 2006. Idris Elba (Avengers: Infinity War) has also signed on to play the film’s villain.
Johnson’s Hobbs first appeared in 2011’s Fast Five and has appeared in each Fast & Furious film since then, with Statham’s Shaw making his debut in a post-credit scene during 2013’s Fast Six and serving as the main antagonist of Furious 7 with an appearance in The Fate of the Furious as well. Hobbs and Shaw is a separate film from the in-development ninth and tenth films in the series, which will hit theaters on August 2, 2019. Meanwhile, Fast & Furious 9 will be released on April 10, 2020 with Fast & Furious 10 set to conclude the series on April 2, 2021.
Johnson will produce alongside Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia through Seven Bucks Productions. Statham, Neal H. Moritz for Original Film, and Chris Morgan for his eponymous production company will also produce, with executive producers Kelly McCormick, Steve Chasman, Amanda Lewis, Ainsley Davies, and Ethan Smith.
