The film, which first began at MGM in 2016 with A Star is Born‘s Bradley Cooper attached to star, is being penned by Max Landis, well-known for his work on the recent Netflix original film hit Bright starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton. The story follows a former astronaut who is hired to take a submersible vehicle to the deepest part of the ocean and encounters supernatural events as the crew gets closer to the final goal.
The cast was also thought to include Wonder Woman‘s Gal Gadot at one point, when Kornél Mundruczó (White God) was attached to direct the film, but she was no longer attached once Cooper had to exit due to scheduling conflicts and Mundruczó exit shortly after. While no star is currently attached to the project, and Kormakur isn’t officially attached yet to the project, production is currently set to begin in the spring.

Landis will produce the project alongside David S. Goyer (Krypton), Kevin Turren (Assassination Nation) and Addictive Pictures (Hold the Dark). Kormakur broke out with American audiences with the 2012 crime thriller Contraband starring Mark Wahlberg (Mile 22), which was a box office hit, and followed it up with the 2013 action comedy 2 Guns starring Wahlberg and Denzel Washington (The Equalizer 2), which was a general critical and commercial hit, and the 2015 biographical adventure Everest starring Jake Gyllenhaal (Spider-Man: Far From Home), which was both a critical and commercial success.
