Avengers: Endgame Writers Discuss How Captain America Became Worthy

If the Avengers taught the fans something is that you cannot lift Thor’s hammer unless you are worthy. Even the idealistic Steve Rogers had to earn his right to wield the mighty Mjolnir when he faced Thanos. In a recent Quarantine Watch Party hosted by ComicBook, Avengers: Endgame writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely were asked if Cap could actually have picked the hammer up in Age of Ultron. Well, it turned out that Steve Rogers had to go through the events told in Captain America: Civil War.

“I’d say he’s not completely worthy yet,” Christopher Markus revealed. “He still has the secret of Tony’s parents’ death to resolve.”

Endgame directors Anthony and Joe Russo took part in the watch party too. They revealed that they considered for a brief moment making Captain America one of the six Infinity Stones. It’s not clear exactly how that might have worked. Would he have had to die on Vormir?

The screenwriters revealed also that they considered several names when it came up to choose the next Captain America. For a brief moment, the shield went to Bucky Barnes. But, eventually, everyone thought that Sam Wilson was the best choice because he embodies the kind of idealism Captain America is about.

“Considered, but quickly dropped,” Markus added. “Captain America is about the idealism, what we could be if we were better. Sam is that. Bucky is something else entirely.”

The Russo Brothers ultimately shared also an emotional behind-the-scenes video from Chris Evans’s last day on the movie set and last day as Captain America in the MCU. Evans played Steve Rogers since 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. The video features the cast’s applause to Evans while he hugs the production crew.
