The Last of Us Set Photos Showcase Post-Apocalyptic City

Filming for the upcoming HBO television series The Last of Us is officially underway, and some photos from the set indicate that the folks behind the series are sticking to the post-apocalyptic feel of the game.

The series based on the extremely popular video game franchise began filming in Canada, with some areas of Calgary being transformed into a post-apocalyptic street likely meant to look similar to the starting point of The Last of Us, which takes place in the North End of Boston, Massachusetts.

According to a report from Calgary’s CTV News, The Last of Us is being called the “largest TV production in Canadian history,” with HBO putting a lot of money into the budget of the highly anticipated show.

The Last of Us takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), a pair connected through the harshness of the world they live in, are forced to endure brutal circumstances and ruthless killers on a trek across a post-pandemic America,” according to the official synopsis.

The first season will consist of 10 episodes and is expected to premiere in 2022.

Along with Game of Thrones’ Pascal and Ramsey, the series also stars Gabriel Luna (Terminator: Dark Fate) as Tommy Miller, Nico Parker (Dumbo) as Joel’s daughter Sarah, Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus) as Frank, Jeffrey Pierce (Bosch) as Perry, Con O’Neill (Chernobyl) as Bill, and Merle Dandridge (The Flight Attendant) as she reprises her role from the video games as Marlene, the leader of a resistance group known as the Fireflies.

The Last of Us hails is executive produced and co-written by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin, who serves as showrunner, and original game writer Neil Druckmann. The project is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television in association with PlayStation Productions.

Executive producers are Carolyn Strauss, Naughty Dog president Evan Wells and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan. Kantermir Balagov is attached to direct the pilot episode.

Developed by Naughty Dog, The Last of Us is an action-adventure survival horror video game that has already sold more than 17 million copies worldwide. The series adaptation will tackle the events of the first game with the possibility of additional content based on the upcoming video game sequel.
