Sony Shifts Release Dates for Jumanji, The Equalizer 2, and More

Sony shifts release dates for Jumanji, The Equalizer 2, and more

Following the reveal this morning that The Dark Tower had shifted from a February 17, 2017 release date to July 28, 2017, even more Sony Pictures films have changed up their release dates.

First up is the upcoming Jumanji sequel/reboot starring Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan which was supposed to open July 28, 2017 and will now instead open December 22, 2017; a similar time frame to the original film, which debuted December 15, 1995. Bad Teacher and Sex Tape helmer Jake Kasdan is directing from a screenplay by High Fidelity and Con Air scribe Scott Rosenberg. It opens one week after Star Wars: Episode VIII and alongside 20th Century Fox and Blue Sky Studios’ animated film Ferdinand, Universal Pictures’ Pitch Perfect 3, and Dimension Films’ The Six Billion Dollar Man.

Next up is long-awaited The Equalizer 2, which is delayed a full year from September 29, 2017 to its new release date of September 14, 2018. Denzel Washington is expected to reprise his role of Robert McCall for the film, but no screenwriter or director are attached. Currently it’s the only film on that release date.

The Flatliners reboot has found new life as well, receiving a brief delay from its original release date of August 18, 2017 to September 29, 2017. Based on the 1990 film by Joel Schumacher, Flatliners will star Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton, Kiersey Clemens and Kiefer Sutherland (who also starred in the original). The film is being directed by Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) from a screenplay by Source Code writer Ben Ripley. It opens alongside Universal’s American Made, starring Tom Cruise.

Finally, Danny Boyle’s T2 Trainspotting (which just released its trailer this morning) has moved back from February 3, 2017 to March 3, 2017 for a limited engagement. It will open wide on March 10, 2017. It opens alongside the final Wolverine film, Logan.
