The recipient of a 1982 Hugo Award, Inconstant Moon was first published in Niven’s short story anthology All the Myriad Ways. It is given the following plot synopsis on the author’s official site:

This story raises the question: How would you spend your last night on Earth? When the Moon suddenly starts shining brighter, Stan and Leslie realize the sun must have gone nova and they only have a few hours until the Earth rotates into the deadly sunshine.

The title Inconstant Moon is a reference to William Shakespeare‘s Romeo and Juliet.

“O, swear not by the moon, th’ inconstant moon, that monthly changes in her circle orb,” says Juliet in the play’s second act. “Lest that thy love prove likewise variable.”

Inconstant Moon was previously adapted for the small screen as a 1996 episode of The Outer Limits.

The Inconstant Moon film will be scripted by Daniel Casey and produced by Ponsoldt through his 1978 Pictures, Vince Gerardis through his Created By and Dan Cohen and Shawn Levy through 21 Laps. Gillian Bohrer will oversee for the studio.
