Ridley Scott to direct WWII film Battle of Britain for Fox
Ridley Scott is a busy man. He’s got 20th Century Fox‘s upcoming Alien: Covenant on the way, as well as a script for the sequel ready to shoot in 2018. “You’ve got to assume to a certain extent success and from that you’d better be ready,” Scott recently said. “You don’t want a two-year gap. So I’ll be ready to go again next year.” Now Variety reports that Scott is in early development to direct and produce Fox’s World War II film Battle of Britain. The script will be written with Matthew Orton (Operation Finale). The project was acquired as a pitch in 2016 and set for Scott Free productions and Safe House Pictures.
The Battle of Britain was the military campaign where the Royal Air Force defended the United Kingdom against Hitler’s Nazi air force, the Luftwaffe, from July 10 – October 31, 1940. The Battle of Britain was the first major defeat for Germany, and it stopped the invasion plans that Germany had for the UK.
Scott’s Alien: Covenant opens in theaters on May 19, 2017. He’s also set to direct All the Money in the World about the 1973 kidnapping of J. Paul Getty for Sony and The Cartel for Fox, adapted from the Don Winslow bestseller about a corrupt detective in the NYPD.
If there was any doubt that 79-year-old Scott is game to keep expanding the Alien universe — the prequel saga is planned as a four-film cycle starting with Prometheus — Scott said, “If you really want a franchise, I can keep cranking it for another six. I’m not going to close it down again. No way.”
