Jason Momoa and the cast of Aquaman have begun principal photography for the film

As signaled by the photo tweeted by director James Wan last night, principal photography for the upcoming Warner Bros./DC Comics film Aquaman has begun. A press release, however, has given us more info about where the film will shoot. “As is fitting for the king of the sea, the shoot will take place mainly in locations spanning the stunning Gold Coast of Queensland, Australia, with extensive filming to be accomplished at Village Roadshow Studios. The production will utilize the facility’s sprawling backlot and all nine VRS soundstages, including its newest, Stage 9, the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Filming will also take place in Newfoundland, Sicily and Tunisia.”

Jason Momoa stars as the titular superhero who was first seen in a brief cameo in the film Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He’s expected to play a much larger role in the forthcoming Justice League, set to hit theaters November 17, 2017. The Zack Snyder film will also introduce Amber Heard as Mera, Queen of Atlantis.

Jason Momoa is joined in the film by Amber Heard as Mera, Queen of Atlantis, Nicole Kidman as Aquaman’s mother, Atlanna, Temuera Morrison as Aquaman’s father, Patrick Wilson as Aquaman’s brother, Orm (aka Ocean Master), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, and Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus. Aquaman will hit theaters on December 21, 2018.

Aquaman’s first appearance was in More Fun Comics #73 (November 1941) and was created by Paul Norris and Mort Weisinger. An icon for over 70 years, Aquaman is the King of the Seven Seas. This reluctant ruler of Atlantis, caught between a surface world constantly ravaging the sea and Atlanteans looking to lash out in revolt, is committed to protecting the entire globe.
