Jeremy Renner broke both arms filming Avengers: Infinity War
While production continues on Avengers: Infinity War, at least one OG Avenger may be down for the count. Variety brings word that Jeremy Renner, who reprises Clint Barton/Hawkeye in the event film, “broke his arms” while filming a stunt, fracturing his right elbow and his left wrist.
“That’s how it goes,” Renner said while promoting Wind River at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, wearing braces on both arms. “It’s part of the job.”
While this will likely prohibit any further arrow shooting by the actor for the time being, he’s already moved on to shooting the less-physically-demanding comedy Tag opposite Ed Helms.
“I’m doing a job that isn’t really requiring a ton of stunts: It’s not an action movie, it’s a comedy — it just happens to have a few stunts in it,” Renner said. “So I don’t have to beat a whole lot of people up or do anything crazy. So it won’t really affect my job… It affects how I get dressed in the morning. I can’t tie my shoes, but outside of that and everything else I can kind of get by.”
This isn’t the first big on-set injury on a Marvel Studios film, with Robert Downey Jr. breaking his ankle during filming of Iron Man 3, which necessitated a break in filming. With so many moving parts to Infinity War, we doubt filmmakers were able to halt production just for Renner, though he can likely be part of a reshoot down the line once his arrow slingers are out of their sling.
Confirmed cast members for the film so far include Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scalett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olson, Chadwick Boseman, Sebastian Stan, Don Cheadle, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Pom Klementieff, Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Sean Gunn, Tom Holland, Jeremy Renner, Josh Brolin, and Paul Rudd.
Filming officially started on Monday, January 23, 2017 for the Avengers sequel, which sees Earth’s Mightiest Heroes teaming up with the Guardians of the Galaxy to take on Brolin’s Thanos.
Directors Anthony and Joe Russo, who return after Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, are directing both Avengers: Infinity War and the untitled fourth film, which will be filmed back-to-back in Atlanta and are written by screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Both films will also be shot entirely with IMAX cameras.
Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War is slated for a release in theaters on May 4, 2018. Then, the Avengers assemble again for the still-untitled fourth film, set for May 3, 2019.
