Pilgrimage: Violent Irish thriller combines history, theology and psychological horror
Irish director Brendan Muldowney’s 2009 feature film debut Savage was a psychological horror movie that was fixated on the idea of violence as a rite of passage, where an assault causes a mild-mannered man to undergo a transformation into something just as – if not more – malevolent. It was a fascinating film, urgent and dark and unsparing and his latest film, Pilgrimage, looks to be concerned with the same sort of masculine, rough themes, this time tempered with theology, history , graphic gore and a journey into the darkest recesses of the mind.
And what a cast Pilgrimage has, with Spider-Man: Homecoming‘s Tom Holland (as opposed to Fright Night director Tom Holland!), The Walking Dead and The Punisher‘s Jon Bernthal and The Hobbit‘s Richard Armitage. While not a traditional horror film, the movie still seems to tread the lines walked by such historical horror as Witchfinder General, The Devils and Black Death and is filled to the brim with severed heads, limbs, blood-spatters and screaming.
Synopsis: Ireland, 1209. A small group of monks begin a reluctant pilgrimage across an island torn between centuries of tribal warfare and the growing power of Norman invaders. As they escort their monastery’s holiest relic to Rome, the true value of the bejeweled relic becomes dangerously apparent and their path becomes increasingly fraught with danger.
