Ant-Man and The Wasp stands tall with $161 million worldwide

Walt Disney Pictures and Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and The Wasp is standing tall at the box office with a worldwide debut of $161 million. Domestically the film brought in $76 million, 33% ahead of the first Ant-Man’s $57.2 million in 2015. The film also debuted to the #1 for the weekend and has become the 20th consecutive #1 debut out of the 20 films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Internationally, Ant-Man and The Wasp collected an estimated $85 million from about 48% of the marketplace, approximately +45% ahead of the first Ant-Man. The box office totals for the sequel have pushed the combined global box office for the entire MCU to $17.06 billion across the twenty films. The sequel stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Peña, Bobby Cannavale, Judy Greer, Abby Ryder Fortson, Tip “T.I.” Harris, David Dastmalchian, Hannah John-Kamen, Walton Goggins, Randall Park, with Michelle Pfeiffer, with Laurence Fishburne, and Academy Award winner Michael Douglas. The sequel was directed once again by Peyton Reed.

Disney•Pixar‘s Incredibles 2 managed to hold on to its second place ranking and brought in an additional $29 million this weekend, pushing the sequel’s domestic total past the $500 million mark to $504.3 million. Internationally the film managed another $35.7 million, bringing the international total to $268.4 million and the global total to $772.7 million. Written and directed by Brad Bird, the film features the voices of Holly Hunter, Craig T. Nelson, Sarah Vowell, Huck Milner, Samuel L. Jackson, Brad Bird, Bob Odenkirk, Catherine Keener, Jonathan Banks, Sophia Bush, and Isabella Rossellini.

Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom continues to perform well at the domestic box office, bringing in an additional $28.56 million this weekend and pushing itself past the $1 billion mark worldwide. The film has a $333.35 domestic total and has brought in $725.3 million from international markets. Fallen Kingdom still has quite a ways to go before coming close to catching up with 2015’s Jurassic World, which ended its theatrical run with $652 million domestically and $1.67 billion worldwide. Directed by J.A. Bayona, the film stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, James Cromwell, Ted Levine, Justice Smith, Geraldine Chaplin, Daniella Pineda, Toby Jones, Rafe Spall and Isabella Sermon, with BD Wong and Jeff Goldblum.

Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions The First Purge debuted in fourth place after the holiday weekend, making its theatrical premiere on Wednesday July 4. For the three day weekend the horror prequel brought in $17.15 million for a five-day total of $31.1 million. The fourth film in the franchise shows a slight dip from previous entries in the series, as the first Purge movie in 2013 managed a $34 million debut during its opening weekend and 2016’s The Purge: Election Year being the highest grossing in the series with $79 million domestically and $118.6 million worldwide. The First Purge stars stars Y’Lan Noel, Lex Scott Davis, Joivan Wade, Luna Lauren Velez and Marisa Tomei. It is directed by Gerard McMurray (Burning Sands), working from a screenplay once again written by franchise creator James DeMonaco.

Sony’s Sicario: Day of the Soldado fell to fifth place and brought in an estimated $7.3 million for the weekend, giving it a domestic total of $35.3 million. The sequel is still behind the first movie, which brought in $46.8 million at the domestic box office. Internationally the film, where the film is distributed by Lionsgate, it isn’t performing as well. Day of the Soldado has only brought in $11.3 million from overseas markets, down a sizable margin from the first movie’s international gross of $38 million. Starring Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin, Isabela Moner, Jeffrey Donovan, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Catherine Keener, the film is directed by Stefano Sollima and written by Taylor Sheridan.

The Lionsgate’s comedy Uncle Drew (released through the Summit Entertainment film label) fell to sixth place for the weekend with an additional $6.62 million, bringing its domestic total to $29.9 million. In the film NBA All-Star Kyrie Irving stars as Uncle Drew with an ensemble cast that includes Lil Rel Howery, Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson, Lisa Leslie, Erica Ash, with Tiffany Haddish, and Nick Kroll. Uncle Drew was directed by Charles Stone III, written by Jay Longino and produced by Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey.

Warner Bros. PicturesOcean’s 8 managed another modest weekend with a weekend haul of $5.28 million, bringing the spin-off to a domestic total of $126.75 million. Internationally the film has brought in an additional $7.7 million this weekend giving it an international total of $110.1 million and a global total of $236.9 million. Directed by Gary Ross, the movie stars Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett plus Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson and James Corden.
