Disney movie release dates: Poppins moves up, Jungle Cruise delayed
Walt Disney Studios has made some big changes to their upcoming release calendar, altering some highly anticipated Disney movie release dates.
First up is the highly anticipated Mary Poppins Returns, originally set to arrive on Christmas Day, the musical sequel will now land on Wednesday, December 19 instead. The cast of Mary Poppins Returns includes Emily Blunt (The Girl on the Train, Into the Woods), Emmy, Grammy and Tony Award winner Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton, Moana), Ben Whishaw (SPECTRE), Emily Mortimer (Hugo) and Julie Walters (Harry Potter films), with Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) and Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins). In addition, Dick Van Dyke plays Mr. Dawes Jr., the chairman of Fidelity Fiduciary Bank, which is now run by William Weatherall Wilkins (Firth), and Angela Lansbury will play the Balloon Lady, a character from PL Travers’ original children’s books.
The studio has also confirmed that their Jungle Cruise movie, the previous “Untitled Disney Live Action” movie dated for October 4, 2019, will now open for business on October 11, 2019. Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Jack Whitehall, Paul Giamatti, Edgar Ramirez, and Jesse Plemons all star in the feature adaptation of the classic Disney ride.
In addition, the upcoming Maleficent 2 will officially arrive in theaters on May 29, 2020, a date previously marked with another “Untitled Disney Live Action” movie. Oscar and three-time Golden Globe winner Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning reprise their roles as the dark fairy Maleficent and Princess Aurora. Joining them are Michelle Pfeiffer, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Ed Skrein and Robert Lindsay. Maleficent II is directed by Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales)
The studio has also confirmed earlier reports that the in-development Indiana Jones 5 has been delayed from July 10 2020 and will now be released in theaters on July 9, 2021. Harrison Ford will return as the iconic film character for the sequel with Steven Spielberg once again sitting in the director’s chair.
Finally, in further ‘Untitled’ movie projects, Disney has moved an Untitled Disney Live Action movie from July 9, 2021 to July 30, 2021, and moved an Untitled Marvel Studios movie from July 30, 2021 to February 12, 2021. In addition the studio has removed two untitled live action Disney movies from their schedule, they were previously set for November 8, 2019 and February 21, 2021.
