The Sandlot prequel in development at Fox
Deadline is reporting that that 20th Century Fox is currently in the process of developing a prequel to the 1993 classic The Sandlot. It has been 25 years since the release of the cult classic and the writer and director from the original film, David Mickey Evans (Smitty), is set to co-write the script for the prequel with Austin Reynolds (The First Hope).
The original The Sandlot is about when Scottie Smalls (Thomas Guiry) moves to a new neighborhood, he manages to make friends with a group of kids who play baseball at the sandlot. Together they go on a series of funny and touching adventures. The boys run into trouble when Smalls borrows a ball from his stepdad that gets hit over a fence. Deadline notes that the plot for the prequel is under wraps but that sources reveal it “the legend of the beast,” the giant dog from the first movie.
Since the release of the original film, there have been two sequels that have gone direct-to-video. The Sandlot 2 (2005) focused on an entirely new group of boys and The Sandlot: Heading Home (2007), which also focuses on a different group of boys.
Colin Greten (Ex-Machina) and Daria Cercek (The Eyes) will be overseeing the prequel for 20th Century Fox.
