How could Endgame effect Doctor Strange 2?
Now that Avengers: Endgame is in wide release, ComingSoon.net is speculating on how the events in that movie could play into what takes place is director Scott Derrickson’s forthcoming Doctor Strange 2. SPOILERS BEWARE!!!
While Tony Stark may have been the big hero of the final battle in the Infinity Saga, one can argue that Doctor Strange was the pivotal character. Not only did his action of willingly surrendering the Time Stone to Thanos in exchange for Tony Stark’s life set in motion all the events that led to Thanos’ defeat, Stephen Strange (along with Wong) was also responsible for galvanizing nearly the entire MCU to that iconic final battle.
That is likely the most significant difference for Strange going into his second film. Rather than being some mystical weirdo who lives at 177A Bleecker Street, he’s now a lynchpin for all the heroes of Earth and beyond. It will be interesting to see how he can balance his life as an Avenger with his day-to-day reality-protection duties as The Sorcerer Supreme. If Captain America did his job right at the end of Endgame he should also still be in possession of the Time Stone.
It is said Time Stone that will probably cause most of his problems in Doctor Strange 2. He still has Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Karl Mordo out there trying to destroy all sorcerers, insisting that “the bill comes due.” One can imagine that bill might also come partly from all the time f**kery in Endgame as well, that maybe the timeline wasn’t put back on track as neatly as Bruce Banner promised The Ancient One it would be. It’s possible that Strange is busy dealing with the repercussions of a universe knocked seriously out of whack by The Avengers.
Whether it’s putting Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War or Hulk in Thor: Ragnarok and now Thor in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Marvel loves plussing solo movies by adding other popular characters. But who would match up nicely with Doctor Strange? We could see everyone from a time-travelling Vision to Strange’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man coming along for a multiverse-spanning adventure. This could also be the movie that finally explores the connection between the Quantum Realm and the Dark Dimension.
What we do know for certain about Doctor Strange 2 is that Derrickson will direct and co-write with C. Robert Cargill, and Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams and Benedict Wong are all expected to return. The characters of Jonathan Pangborn and Master Hamir could also have larger roles, and the comics characters of Nightmare and Clea could play a part.

Endgame is the follow-up to last year’s Avengers: Infinity War, which saw the titular superhero team take the fight to Thanos in order to stop his attempt at exterminating half of the universe’s population with the Infinity Stones. But it was to no avail, as he was able to successfully collect them all and snap his fingers, wiping out half of all life from existence in a cloud of ash. The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films.
Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Sean Gunn, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan and Josh Brolin as Thanos.
