What Happened to Loki in Avengers: Endgame?
Now that Avengers: Endgame is in wide release ComingSoon.net is looking at the possibilities and questions its loopy time travel plot has created. Probably the biggest example of this is the fate of Loki in the MCU, so SPOILERS BEWARE!!!
Loki has been dead many times. Loki “died” at the end of his very first movie appearance in 2011’s Thor, falling into endless space, only it turned out to have fallen in with Thanos via his herald the Other. He next perished in 2013’s Thor: The Dark World where he “died” at the hands of Kurse in order to save his brother Thor’s life, only to use that illusion as a ruse to banish Odin and take over Asgard. Finally in Avengers: Infinity War he was strangled to death at the hands of Thanos himself in an attempt to murder the Mad Titan, with the big purple guy decalring that there would be “no resurrections” for him this time.
Then here comes Avengers: Endgame, where Earth’s Mightiest Heroes use time travel via the Quantum Realm to go back into the first Avengers movie right after Loki had been captured in the penthouse of Stark Tower. Their purpose was to steal Loki’s scepter containing the Mind Stone and the Tesseract cube containing the Space Stone, but during a scuffle involving an angry Hulk the case containing the Tesseract gets knocked away from Tony Stark and into the hand’s of… the prisoner Loki. being the opportunist he is, Loki immediately grabs the cube and uses it to transport himself to parts unknown. Tony and Steve are then forced to travel even further back to the 70’s to retrieve it from the army base/secret S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters in New Jersey.
Now the ending of the film posits that Captain America brings the 1970’s stone back to its rightful place in the timeline, but that still leaves the one that Loki stole out in the wild with The God of Mischief attached to it, undoubtedly up to no good. Keep in mind, too, that this is not the slightly redeemed Loki that learned to love and fight side-by-side with his brother in Thor: Ragnarok. This is the pissed off Loki that just got his ass handed to him by The Avengers.
Perhaps the biggest indication of what happens to this Loki comes in the recent descriptions of the upcoming Disney+ Loki limited series starring Tom Hiddleston, which is said to revolve around the God of Mischief as he pops up throughout time influencing human history. How the Space Stone will allow him to time travel remains to be seen (that’s more of a Time Stone kinda thing), but with Rick and Morty‘s Michael Waldron behind the show we’re sure it will be wacky.
So there you have it. Loki as we knew him in Infinity War is technically dead, but Loki as we knew him at the end of The Avengers is very much alive and, as is his want, probably trying to rule some civilization somewhere in the universe.
What sort of trouble is Loki going to get into now that he has the Space Stone? Let us know in the comments below!

Endgame is the follow-up to last year’s Avengers: Infinity War, which saw the titular superhero team take the fight to Thanos in order to stop his attempt at exterminating half of the universe’s population with the Infinity Stones. But it was to no avail, as he was able to successfully collect them all and snap his fingers, wiping out half of all life from existence in a cloud of ash. The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films.
Avengers: Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Sean Gunn, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan and Josh Brolin as Thanos.
