Ansel Elgort Says Baby Driver Sequel Is Going to Happen
Filmmaker Edgar Wright has been floating the idea to make a sequel to his 2017 action romp Baby Driver since it first hit theaters that summer. Now, in an interview with MTV News, actor Ansel Elgort, who played the titular Baby, has said that he’s seen the script for Baby Driver 2, and says that “I think it’s gonna happen.” However, the moniker for the sequel won’t simply add a “2” at the end, it will apparently be something different.
There’s currently no timetable for the sequel, or at least, not one Elgort is aware of, as Wright is currently making Last Night in SoHo. Nonetheless, the young actor seems confident he’ll get to step into the role of Baby once again. Given how the first film ended, however, it will likely be set a few years down the road, after Baby’s granted parole.
Wright, whose previous credits include Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and The World’s End, brought together a cast that included Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars, Divergent), Kevin Spacey (The Usual Suspects) as Doc, Jon Hamm (Mad Men, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) as Buddy, Lily James (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Cinderella) as Deborah, Eiza Gonzalez (Jem and the Holograms, From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series) as Darling, Jon Bernthal (Marvel’s Daredevil, The Walking Dead) as Griff, and Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained, The Amazing Spider-Man 2) as Bats.

The film followed Baby, a prodigy getaway driver who relied on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game. When he meets the girl of his dreams (Lily James), Baby sees a chance to ditch his criminal life and make a clean getaway. But after being coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love and freedom.
Baby Driver grossed over $100 million in the US, and close to $120 million overseas, bringing its grand total to more than $226 million. Considering it was made for a $34 million budget, it would make fiscal sense to ride drive that success into another sequel. Elgort, meanwhile, will star in Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story.
