Russell Crowe’s Unhinged Takes the Weekend Box Office Crown

As theaters open up around the world, audiences have slowly returned to America’s favorite pastime — the movies! Per Deadline, this week, moviegoers shelled out over $4 million in ticket sales for Russell Crowe’s Unhinged, enough to laugh the Derrick Borte-directed flick to the top of the charts. Coming in second was The Spongebob Movie: Sponge On the Run with $0.55 million, followed by Words on Bathroom Walls with $0.462 million, Cut Throat City with $0.265 million, and Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula with $0.225 million.

Curiously, according to IndieWire, Warner Bros. opted to not report an estimate for its rerelease of Christopher Nolan’s Inception and even blocked grosses reported by theaters, which is why it’s absent for the above list. In case you were wondering.

Unhinged, which was originally slated to hit theaters in July, will now be hitting theaters on August 21, with the official statement confirming that though not all theaters will be open in time for the release, forecasts show that more will open up the film’s second weekend of release and that “80 percent” of moviegoers were surveyed and said they would “definitely attend” the film in theaters.

Unhinged is a psychological thriller starring Academy Award-winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator) from Carl Ellsworth, the writer of Red Eye and Disturbia, and Lisa Ellzey, the producer of Warrior and Kingdom of Heaven. The film explores the fragile balance of a society pushed to the edge, taking something we’ve all experienced- road rage – to an unpredictable and terrifying conclusion. Rachel (Caren Pistorius) is running late to work when she has an altercation at a traffic light with a stranger (Crowe) whose life has left him feeling powerless and invisible. Soon, Rachel finds herself and everyone she loves the target of a man who decides to make one last mark upon the world by teaching her a series of deadly lessons. What follows is a dangerous game of cat and mouse that proves you never know just how close you are to someone who is about to become unhinged.
