HBO Max gives limited series order to Ava DuVernay’s DMZ adaptation

After wrapping production on the pilot for the potential series adaptation of the Vertigo comic, HBO Max has officially greenlit the Ava DuVernay-produced DMZ for a four-part limited series at the WarnerMedia streaming platform, with production slated to begin on the rest of the series in 2021!

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to bring this epic to the screen with my boundary-pushing partners at WBTV and HBO Max, a sublime cast led by Rosario and Benjamin, and my partner and friend, the inimitable and ever-inspiring Ava DuVernay,” Roberto Patino, series showrunner/creator/writer, said in a statement. “DMZ offers up an explosive playground which, more than anything else, exalts the resilience of community and the human spirit. I can’t wait to welcome the die-hard fans of the comic books and new viewers alike to this intoxicating, haunting and inspiring world.”

DMZ takes place in a near-future where an American civil war has left Manhattan a demilitarized zone (hence the title) that is isolated from the rest of the world. The story follows a female medic who is desperately searching for her lost son in the DMZ while contending with gangs, militias, and warlords all the while saving lives along the way.

DMZ’s’ unflinching story of a country torn apart resonates eerily and profoundly amid our current state of the union,” Sarah Aubrey, head of original content, HBO Max, said in a statement. “With the powerhouse visionary team of Ava and Roberto at the helm, bringing this critically acclaimed DC gem to life promises to entertain and inspire hope.”

The series will star Rosario Dawson (Briarpatch) as Alma, Benjamin Bratt (Doctor Strange) as Parco Delgado and Freddy Miyares (When They See Us) as Skel.

Dawson’s Alma is a fierce medic who saves lives while desperately searching for her lost son. As she contends with the gangs, militias, demagogues, and warlords who now control the lawless island, she becomes the unlikely source of what everyone there has lost: hope.

Roberto Patino (WestworldSons of Anarchy, Fear Street) will serve as showrunner and executive producer, with DuVernay having directed the pilot and executive producing via her ARRAY Filmworks banner alongside Patino and Warner Bros. TV.

In 2018, DuVernay had signed a massive $100 million multi-year overall deal with Warner Bros. Television Group to produce new original content for broadcast and cable, premium cable, streaming services, and other platforms. The new series will be added to the growing slate of DuVernay’s ongoing projects which include: the DC film New Gods; Netflix’s docufilm about the late Grammy-winning rapper Nipsey Hussle; Battle at Versailles; and Cherish the Day.
