Marvel Studios to Launch In-House Animation Branch

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is continuing to grow by the day, and with Marvel Studios readying to release its animated series What If…? soon, the world of Marvel animation is also expanding, with even more planned for the future.

Speaking to Variety in a new interview, Marvel’s executive VP of film production Victoria Alonso said that Marvel Studios plans to launch its own in-house animation branch and mini-studio, with the focus of the branch aimed at producing even more animated projects outside of What If…?

“We’re going to have our animation branch and mini studio, and there will be more to come from that as well,” Alonso said. “We’re super excited about animation, which is my first love.”

The announcement comes ahead of the next month’s debut of What If…?, which aims to showcase famous stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but with a twist on how they occur. By showing off a multiverse of infinite possibilities, Marvel’s What If…? features fan-favorite characters, including Peggy Carter, T’Challa, Doctor Strange, Killmonger, Thor, and more. The series is directed by Bryan Andrews with AC Bradley as head writer. Marvel Studios’ first-ever animated series launches on Disney+ on Wednesday, August 11.

Most notably, Marvel’s What If…? will feature the late Chadwick Boseman, who was able to reprise his role as T’Challa, also known as the Black Panther, for the show. His episode will revolve around T’Challa being abducted by the Reavers that took Peter Quill (Star-Lord) in The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. Every story in the show will be non-canonical, as the stories will feature some wildly different outcomes from their actual events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The original What If comic book series debuted in 1977, and 200 issues have been published over time. The stories ranged from implausible scenarios to more humored-filled takes. It’s a great way for Marvel to use the streaming service to tell more out-of-the-box stories unachievable through live-action.
