Reports, ratings boards, achievement icons, and Rockstar Games’ constant cycle of re-releases made this all but inevitable, but now it’s finally official. Rockstar has revealed the existence of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition, which is a touched-up bundle of Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. No specific release date was given, but it’s coming out on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC later this year and iOS and Android devices in 2022.

Rockstar debuted the teaser trailer on its Twitter account and then subsequently posted a blog post about it. There is still no footage of these versions in action, but Rockstar said it is making “across-the-board upgrades including graphical improvements and modern gameplay enhancements for all three titles” but will keep the “classic look and feel” of those games. It’s all vague so it’s unclear how big the “gameplay enhancements” and “graphical improvements” will be. However, Rockstar might clear that up soon since it will share more in the coming weeks.

The vanilla versions of the games will also be removed from digital storefronts next week. All three games are currently being sold digitally on the PS3, PS4, and PC, while only San Andreas is on the store for three most recent Xbox generations.
Grand Theft Auto III‘s 20th anniversary is coming up on October 22 and some special items from the game will come to Grand Theft Auto Online and be part of an anniversary celebration. Not many specifics were given, but Rockstar said that some “unusual activity” will happen in the southern part of San Andreas. There are also various changes coming to GTAO, including cycling old Jobs back in. More changes for GTAO are planned for the upcoming launch of GTAV on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
