Netflix has announced that DMZ co-creator Roberto Patino and The Conjuring universe helmer James Wan are currently in the process of developing a series adaptation of Nocterra, based on Image Comics’ sci-fi horror adventure comic book of the same name. This marks Patino’s first project for the streamer under his recently signed multi-year overall deal.
“The ease, honesty and profound creative support I’ve found in Bela Bajaria, Peter Friedlander, Matt Thunell, Alex Sapot, Andrew McQuinn and Kenyatta Smith has been nothing short of ideal,” Patino said in a statement (via Deadline). “Netflix is an extraordinary champion of intentional and inclusive storytelling, and I’m so eager to use this opportunity to tell bold stories that properly represent the Latinx community in entertaining, exhilarating and powerful ways. I couldn’t be happier to call Netflix my new home, and I can’t wait to hit the ground running with Nocterra and my boundary-pushing friends and partners at Atomic Monster.”

Described as a high-octane sci-fi adventure, Nocterra is created by Scott Snyder and Tony S. Daniel, which had just launched earlier this year. The comic book centers around a skilled ferryman named Valentina “Val” Riggs, who relays people and goods through a world enveloped by a lasting darkness that turns the living into monstrous creatures called shades.

The official book synopsis reads: “It’s been ten years since Val Riggs saw the sun swallowed up by darkness. Ten years since nearly everyone she knew was infected and changed into hideous ‘shades’. Now a ‘ferryman’ providing transport for people and goods, she traverses the deadly unlit roads in her eighteen-wheeler, taking on whatever evils the night provides. When the promise of an illuminated sanctuary crosses her path, Val must undergo a journey far beyond the limits of any ferryman before her. But with a loved one in the throes of infection, time is running short…”
The Netflix adaptation will be written and executive produced by Robert Patino (Westworld, Sons of Anarchy), who will also be serving as the showrunner. As of now, the project is still in early development stages.
