Pokémon Legends: Arceus Is the Refresh the Series Has Long Needed

Pokémon has been a mainstay in gaming for over 20 years. While the role-playing game series has added plenty of quality-of-life changes and hundreds of strange forms of pocket monsters, the formula for the main, GameFreak-developed entries has largely stayed the same, much to the dismay of some who grew up on the older entries. Sure, there have been spin-offs, such as Pokémon Ranger on the DS, that have provided unique twists on the universe, but those aren’t the major installments that are the main attraction. However, Pokémon Legends: Arceus has completely turned the series on its head in many ways and this evolution is something the franchise has needed for some time.

The back of the game’s physical box sums up the new gameplay quite well: “action meets RPG in a new kind of Pokémon adventure!” This is true and it’s easy to compare a lot of its features to other action RPGs, even if the actual Pokémon battles are ultimately turn-based. Each area to explore is a vast vista of land with spread-out camping grounds that serve as a temporary reprieve from the action not unlike the Hunter’s Dream in Bloodborne. While these locations aren’t always the most captivating backgrounds (although the later areas are more lively than the initial plain starting area), they do present an intriguing challenge in how the player interacts with the world.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the Refresh the Series Has Long-Needed

Unlike recent Pokémon games where the thought of a pocket monster hurting a human is largely absurd, many Pokémon offer a real threat to the player in Legends: Arceus. Simply being in the line of sight will put many Pokémon on the offensive as they try to protect their territory, so players will have to run and dodge out of the way of attacks or send out their own monsters to provide a distraction and proper battle. This makes actually going about the world wildly interesting as hiding in the tall grass becomes a key tool for catching Pokémon off-guard as well as a means for survival.

RELATED: Pokémon Legends: Arceus Gameplay Trailer Highlights New Battle System

There is also a real significance to defeat in Legends: Arceus, which has been a rarity in the series as it typically only means you get rushed back to a Pokémon Center to try again. Even though death isn’t permanent, players will drop many of their items while adventuring if they fall off a cliff or get demolished by a creature while adventuring. Items are also given an extra significance in the game due to a crafting mechanic that is new to the series as players can create Poké Balls and healing items from what they collect. It all adds to a gameplay loop that puts exhilarating exploration at the forefront with an ever-present layer of tension.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the Refresh the Series Has Long-Needed

A lot of these overworld changes are grown from the wild areas of Sword and Shield, which were 3D explorable areas that allowed players to roam around, and thus seem like a natural progression for the series. This isn’t a total pivot and means Arceus is still recognizably a Pokémon game. There are still plenty of battles and you’re tossing Poké Balls to catch the creatures, so there are enough familiar trappings that will please those that are more averse to change. By placing those fundamental trappings into a new environment, GameFreak has found a brilliant middle ground of old and new that will help move the franchise forward.

RELATED: The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask Is Coming to Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack Soon

Combat has also gotten an upgrade as the ability to modify attacks during battle is another brilliant addition to the core gameplay. It adds even more strategy to the turn-based gameplay as players can go for agile moves that are weaker but likely to hit first or strong attacks that pack an extra punch. Using these abilities efficiently can turn the tide of battles and refreshes a turn-based system that hasn’t evolved a ton since the Game Boy era. There’s plenty of minutia for players to figure out as agile attacks require less of a cooldown and allow you to use an item and potentially attack again, while strong moves lower your action speed while taking up more ability points

While the latest Pokémon game is smaller in scope than recent offerings with only 242 species of Pokémon to catch and a story that can be completed in about 20 hours, the ambitious gameplay more than makes up for the relative “lack” of content. The many side quests and research tasks will give devoted players the 70 or so hours they desire, and it winds up laying an incredibly interesting framework for the future of the series with its more open exploration and slightly different take on combat. No matter if you’re a lapsed fan whose enjoyment of the series has faded or a current fan looking for a fresh experience, Pokémon Legends: Arceus has a lot to offer.

It Takes Two Being Adapted Into Film or Television Series

It Takes Two was lauded for its cooperative gameplay in 2021, even winning Game of the Year at 2021’s Game Awards (and coming close to the top in ComingSoon’s own list). However, Hazelight Studios is now taking that popular video game and turning it into a film or television series.

According to Variety, Hazelight is teaming up with dj2 Entertainment, a digital production company, to create something with It Takes Two. However, it appears as though the creators behind it don’t know if it will be a show or a film yet.

“Creating the world and story in It Takes Two was so much fun for me and the team,” said Josef Fares, Hazelight founder and the team’s creative director. “Since it has a strong narrative with many crazy characters and just as crazy co-op action moments, the potential is huge for a great adaption to film or television.”

MORE: Discord Adds PlayStation Network Integration

Fares is now known as a game director, but has directed films, television shows, and shorts in the past before he got his start in video games. Adapting video game franchises is also something dj2 Entertainment is known for and is working on the upcoming shows based on Life is Strange, My Friend Pedro, Disco ElysiumTomb Raider, and more.

There is also no studio, network, or streaming service attached to the project. However, Variety’s sources say that there is currently a “multi-party bidding war” over which company will grab the rights. But it seems to have its writers as Pat Casey and Josh Miller, known for the 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog movie and its upcoming sequel, are on board to adapt it.

The Offer Photos Preview Paramount+’s Making of The Godfather Drama

The first official photos for Paramount+’s upcoming limited series The Offer have been revealed through Vanity Fair. It is currently slated to make its debut on April 28.

The Offer photos, which you can check out below, feature our first look at the main cast including Miles Teller, Dan Fogler, Matthew Goode, and Juno Temple as they portray the respective roles of producer Al Ruddy, director Francis Ford Coppola, former Paramount Studios chief Robert Evans, and Bettye McCartt.

Based on the never-before-seen experiences of Oscar and Golden Globe-winning producer Albert S. Ruddy, The Offer follows Ruddy’s journey in bringing Mario Puzo’s epic crime novel The Godfather to life on the big screen. Joining Miles Teller as Al Ruddy are Matthew Goode as Robert Evans, Dan Fogler as Francis Ford Coppola, Burn Gorman as Charles Bluhdorn, Colin Hanks as Barry Lapidus, Giovanni Ribisi as Joe Colombo, Juno Temple as Bettye McCartt, Justin Chambers as Marlon Brando, Anthony Ippolito as Al Pacino, and Patrick Gallo as Mario Puzo.

In an interview with the outlet, executive producer and creator Michael Tolkin has opened up about his reason for bringing The Godfather’s behind-the-scenes story to the small screen. He revealed that its “human story,” was what drew him to the project.

“What sealed it for me was when Al said, ‘Every day of making The Godfather was the worst day in my life,’ and that told me we had a show,” Tolkin said. “For every character in the film, getting it made or stopping it from being made was at the core of their actions, and it was a matter of life and death to them. So that’s not a gangster story, that’s a human story. That’s what gave the book and the movie so much power. Everyone is fighting for their existence.”

The limited series will also feature Josh Zuckerman, Meredith Garretson, Nora Arnezeder, Paul McCrane, Anthony Skordi, Jake Cannavale, James Madio, Michael Rispoli, Stephanie Koenig, Lou Ferrigno, Frank John Hughes, and Danny Nucci.

The Offer is written and executive produced by Nikki Toscano and Michael Tolkin, with Toscano also serving as the showrunner. Rocketman director Dexter Fletcher has also signed on to helm the project. Executive producers are Teller, Ruddy, and Leslie Grief.

Matt Smith and Morfydd Clark to Lead Supernatural Horror Pic Starve Acre

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Emmy nominee Matt Smith (The Crown) and Morfydd Clark (Saint Maud) have been tapped for the leading roles in the upcoming supernatural horror film titled Starve Acre, based on Andrew Michael Hurley’s novel of the same name. Production is expected to begin this spring in the UK.

“Daniel is one of the most exciting filmmakers working today and we’re thrilled to be bringing his adaptation of Andrew Michael Hurley’s extraordinary novel to the screen,” Producer Tessa Ross said in a statement. “Starve Acre is already a genre defining modern classic – Daniel’s singular vision and this exceptional cast bring great depth and strength to this evocative story.”

Starve Acre will be written and directed by Daniel Kokotajlo (Apostasy). It is being described as a modern horror that will be exploring inherited trauma and loss within a world ruled by supernatural folklore.

“Set in rural 1970s England, the film centers around Richard and Juliette whose seemingly idyllic family life is thrown into turmoil when their son starts acting out of character, creating an insurmountable wedge between the once happy couple,” reads the synopsis. “At Starve Acre, their remote family home, archaeologist Richard buries himself in exploring a folkloric myth that the ancient oak tree on their land is imbued with phenomenal powers. While his wife Juliette turns to the local community to find some kind of peace, Richard obsessively digs deeper. An unexpected discovery soon occupies the couple’s attention and dark and sinister forces, unwittingly allowed into the home, offer a disturbing possibility of reconnection between them.”

Starve Acre will be produced by Tessa Ross, Juliette Howell, and Emmy Duffy, with Cornerstone reuniting with Kokotajlo to handle the project’s worldwide sales.

Both Smith and Clark are set to star in two of this year’s highly-anticipated fantasy dramas, with Smith portraying Daemon Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon and Clark to play the young version of Galadriel in Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Laura Dern to Star in Sci-Fi Drama Morning

According to Deadline, Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) and Laura Dern (Marriage Story) have signed on to star in the upcoming sci-fi drama film titled Morning, which will be set in the near-future about a world where there’s no end to living and work due to a pill that suppresses a person’s need to sleep. The award-winning actors will also be joined by A Quiet Place star Noah Jupe.

Morning is a joyful, reflective, and defiant story about a reality not so far from our own where a preoccupation with productivity has destroyed our ability to connect, grieve and love,” producer Adam Ackland said in a statement. “We cannot wait to see this incredibly talented cast and creative team headed by Justin, Laura, and Noah bring Sam’s brilliantly original script to life.”

Cumberbatch, who recently starred in the blockbuster hit Spider-Man: No Way Home and Jane Campion’s acclaimed drama The Power of the Dog, will also be serving as an executive producer along with Dern and Jayme Lemons for Jaywalker Pictures.

“The film is set in a near-future where society has a pill that does away with the need to sleep. With the added help of an artificial sun, there is no end to morning daylight, living and work. However, as a young generation grows up deprived of the world of sleep, they consider rebelling to reclaim their dreams,” reads the synopsis. “The ambitious and driven Cathy (Dern) was an early advocate of a sleepless world, but as she and her son Danny (Jupe) pick up the pieces of their lives following the death of her husband Frank (Cumberbatch), she finds the universe she helped to build is starting to crumble around her, whilst memories she fought so hard to repress are bleeding into her waking life. As Danny is further drawn into a subversive underworld of dreamers, Cathy must confront her nightmares and fight hard not to lose her son.”

The Seven Deadly Sins manga began in 2012 and lasted an incredible eight years before ending in March 2020. The series follows a band of knights in the land of Britannia, who are framed for trying to incite a coup, and must clear their names in order to restore their honor.

The Book of Boba Fett – Chapter 5 Review: Is This The Mandalorian?

Every week, I begin my review of the new episode of The Book of Boba Fett by stating that a new episode of this series starring Boba Fett as the main character has arrived on Disney+. Unfortunately, I don’t think I can write that with a straight face with this episode. Because while you may click on “Episode 5: Return of the Mandalorian” expecting an episode of The Book of Boba Fett, you may be surprised to find that Disney accidentally uploaded the season 3 premiere of The Mandalorian instead. This has to be the only rational explanation, right?

In Episode 4 of this series, we got a few hints at the return of Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal). The final scene of that episode has Fennec Shand stating that credits could buy muscle if they knew where to look, as we hear some notes of Ludwig Goransson’s Mandalorian theme. It left the episode on a high note as we wondered if the next episode would feature the war between Boba’s army and the Pykes or if it would simply feature Boba and Fennec finally leaving Tatooine to search the galaxy for Djarin. Either option would have made for a fantastic episode that set the series into high gear.

The opening scene features Djarin entering a slaughterhouse looking for Kaba Baiz. It’s great to see Djarin again over a year after his emotional season finale, and we hear him say his iconic line: “I can bring you in warm, or I can bring you in cold.” This leads to a fantastic action sequence that immediately reintroduces the audience to Djarin’s power as he fights the Klatooinians. We also see Djarin wield the Darksaber after he won it from Moff Gideon, and it’s always a wickedly fun time to see the Darksaber in action. It’s a phenomenal opening scene that really should have just stayed an opening scene.

Once the title card appeared on screen and we continued to follow Djarin, I found myself slightly baffled. As the episode went on, I almost wanted to refresh the browser to ensure that I was watching the right show. Later, Boba meets the Armorer and Paz Vizsla, two survivors of the Mandalorian tribe. They discuss the Darksaber, the fate of Moff Gideon, name-drop Bo-Katan, and Djarin gets the Armorer to melt his beskar spear into a little gift for Grogu, the child Djarin watched over in his series. How is any of this relevant to the Boba Fett storyline we have been following for four episodes?

MORE: The Mandalorian’s Return Leads to Best The Book of Boba Fett Episode Yet

It’s not. It’s not relevant at all. Episode 5 does not continue the story threads left off by the first four episodes of The Book of Boba Fett. Instead, every storyline referenced in this scene is a direct continuation of season 2 of The Mandalorian, a completely different show. Anyone who hasn’t seen that series is left in the dark with this episode that is almost wholly disconnected from the first four episodes. There are no references to the Pyke Syndicate, the Tusken Raiders, or Mayor Mok Shaiz, whom the series has been hinting at as its primary antagonist. The sequence with Djarin, the Armorer, and Vizla adds nothing to what the show has been setting up.

Think about the duel between Djarin and Vizla as Vizla attempts to claim the Darksaber for himself. It’s well-choreographed, but it lacks any emotional weight as these two characters had never been in this show before this episode. Then, Djarin meets Peli Motto on Tatooine, where she replaces his Razor Crest ship with an N-1 starfighter. A scene with the Jawas finally connects the episode to the main storyline where Peli tells Djarin about the Pykes who control the spice trade and rule over Tatooine.

As Djarin test flights the starfighter, he goes through Beggar’s Canyon, a solid reference dating back to 1977 when Luke Skywalker flew towards the Death Star saying, “It’ll be just like Beggar’s Canyon back home.” It’s a fun sequence primarily due to Bryce Dallas Howard’s exceptional direction, and the episode ends with Fennec arriving to recruit Djarin to help Boba in the coming war. This now marks three consecutive episodes that end with the characters saying, “we have a war coming up, and we have to get ready.” The show moves at a snail’s pace for a war that can’t come soon enough.

MORE: The Book of Boba Fett Primer: What Is the Darksaber?

Now, as an episode of The Mandalorian, this was perfectly acceptable. But as an episode of The Book of Boba Fett, this was dreadful. The problem with this show is that it stands on the shoulders of superior films and shows to make itself appear tall, but the story cannot stand on its own two feet. The series relies on your preexisting knowledge and love of Star Wars to get you to like this show, but the fact that they threw in an obvious backdoor pilot for season 3 of The Mandalorian demonstrates that this story has so little meat on its bones that it can’t stand on its own as a good show.

While it was nice to step away from the drab setting of Tatooine in this episode, and Howard remains a talented director, this episode only rubs salt in the wound that Star Wars fans aren’t willing to admit they have. That wound is the unfortunate reality that this show lacks a compelling story and is actively wasting its protagonist by throwing him away for an entire episode. Some have argued this is the best episode of the series so far. However, if the best episode of a show is the one that most closely resembles an episode of a completely different show and the titular character is absent, that exposes a gaping hole in the very concept of a series titled The Book of Boba Fett. If there’s anything this show has been good at, it’s been making you wish you were watching something better.

SCORE: 4/10

As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 5 equates to “Poor.” The negatives overweigh the positive aspects making it a struggle to get through.

Disclosure: The critic watched the episode on Disney+ for ComingSoon’s The Book of Boba Fett – Chapter 5 review.

Why Fans of Yellowstone Should Watch Taylor Sheridan’s Wind River

Fans of the Kevin Costner-led series Yellowstone should take a few hours this weekend to watch Wind River on Netflix. As directed by Taylor Sheridan, co-creator (and sometimes director) of Yellowstone, this gritty tale shares many of the same characteristics as its TV counterpart, particularly in its views of Native American culture and the rugged wilderness — except rather than fighting over the vast plains of Montana, characters scramble to flee the snow-covered mountains of Wyoming.

“Cory Lambert is a wildlife officer who finds the body of an 18-year-old woman on an American Indian reservation in snowy Wyoming. When the autopsy reveals that she was raped, FBI agent Jane Banner arrives to investigate,” says the official synopsis. “Teaming up with Lambert as a guide, the duo soon find that their lives are in danger while trying to solve the mystery of the teen’s death.:

RELATED: Yellowstone Prequel 1883 Becomes Most Watched Premiere on Paramount+

Wind River, starring Marvel Cinematic Universe alums Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen, opened in 2017 and grossed a modest $45 million against an $11 million budget. And while it earned high praise from the likes of Peter Travers who thought the film packed “an elemental power that knocks you for a loop” and praised the performances of Renner and Olsen as well as Sheridan’s unconventional storytelling style, this gritty “western” doesn’t pop up often in discussions amongst the general moviegoing public like it probably should.

At any rate, if you haven’t seen Wind River, here are a few reasons why you should check it out.

The Stars

Forget Hawkeye and WandaVision; if you really want to see Renner and Olsen dazzle on the screen, look no further than Wind River. He plays U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agent Cory Lambert who stumbles upon the frozen remains of a young woman, and she plays the no-nonsense FBI Special Agent Jane Banner tasked with investigating the murder. Together, the pair form a fascinating team — he’s a quiet man with a tragic past who knows the lay of the land and the dangers hidden within it; she hails from modern society where a call for backup isn’t met with a laugh, and murder scenes aren’t blanketed with ten inches of snow overnight.

I don’t want to spoil the film for anyone who hasn’t seen it, suffice to say the pair must eventually see eye-to-eye in order to solve the horrific crime. Through it all, Renner and Olsen display remarkable chemistry as an odd couple who practically hail from different planets.

RELATED: Tom Hanks to Guest Star in Paramount+’s Yellowstone Prequel 1883

There’s a terrific scene early on when Jane awkwardly meets her rugged male companions amidst the freezing elements, and it’s hard to tell which is sending more shivers down her spine. Olsen does a fantastic job conveying a hardened agent striving to maintain her authority in an awkward, even foreign environment.

Later, Cory and Jane share an intimate moment together where he reveals the details surrounding his missing daughter, and, as typical, Renner demonstrates a knack for what I like to call “subtle emoting.” You can see his pain, but only briefly, via subtle movements or gestures. Renner’s performance isn’t overdone, but expressive enough to draw real emotion.

The Supporting Players

I love great acting and, as stated above, Wind River has plenty of it. Renner and Olsen carry the film, but supporting stars Graham Greene and Gil Birmingham (of Yellowstone and Hell or High Water fame) bring plenty of fire. As the Tribal Police Chief, Ben Shoyo, Greene portrays an individual who has seen and lost too much to truly invest himself emotionally in any case. While Birmingham delivers an emotional performance as a grieving father trying to make sense of his daughter’s death.

As an aside, for another great supporting turn by Birmingham, other than Yellowstone, check out Hell or High Water (also scripted by Sheridan), where he plays a Texas Ranger pursuing two bank robbers alongside Jeff Bridges.

ComingSoon spoiler alert

That One Scene

Yeah, sorry, I’ve got to venture into spoiler territory here, because my favorite scene in Wind River is an intense shootout that takes place during the climax. Actually, there are two really intense moments broken up by one perfectly placed flashback that explains exactly what happened to the victim. The first occurs when Jane and her team arrive at a drilling site where the dead girl’s boyfriend works. What starts as a cordial bit of questioning quickly escalates into a wicked stand-off.

Following that bit, Jane approaches Matt’s door and, well, all hell breaks loose. I had to pick my jaw off the floor the first time I saw that scene.

A couple of years ago, I had the opportunity to visit Tombstone where I watched a reenactment of the famed Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Having watched a number of films and documentaries on the fabled event, I was astonished to learn that the gunfight itself lasted a brief — but still very intense — 30 seconds.

I imagine that real-life moment looked and sounded much like the shootout in Wind River, albeit with fewer machine guns, which is actually pretty wild to think about.

The Underlying Narrative

On the surface, Wind River is a rather simplistic murder mystery, but percolating under the surface are darker truths about Native American life. Sheridan’s story is centered around the injustices faced by Native American women on a daily basis.

“Sexual assault of a Native woman by a non-Native couldn’t be prosecuted because it was a state crime on federal land,” Sheridan explained to Newsweek. “At the same time, if you were a Native accused of assaulting a non-Native, you could be prosecuted twice, once by the federal government and once by the tribal police. It was a double standard of medieval proportions.”

By the film’s end, the heroes have (mostly) emerged victorious and killed the bad guys, but Wind River doesn’t end in triumph. Instead, Sheridan concludes his story with a rather frightening title card: “While missing person statistics are compiled for every other demographic, none exist for Native American women.”

Here we have a dramatic thriller with more on its mind than delivering a simple-minded potboiler, and that’s what makes Wind River such a unique cinematic experience. Like all of the films on Sheridan’s resume, from Sicario to Yellowstone, Hell or High Water to the less seen (but still very good) Those Who Wish Me Dead, Wind River strives to uncover difficult truths simmering beneath America’s rich soil. As such, his films are a different breed than most action thrillers and often leave the viewer with plenty to think about. While Wind River doesn’t quite hit the highs of Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario, it is no less gripping, fascinating and enlightening.

But don’t take my word for it. Check out Wind River for yourselves, then come back here and let us know what you thought. And be sure to watch all of Sheridan’s flicks if you haven’t already. The man is a cinematic treasure.

Spider-Man: No Way Home Continues to Impress at the Box Office

Spider-Man: No Way Home continued its box office assault this weekend, taking in another $11 million in its seventh week of release — this, despite many east coast theaters closing their doors for winter storm Kenan. To date, Spidey has collected a whopping $735.9 million stateside and has its eyes set on Avatar’s $760M total (not adjusted for inflation).

Per Deadline, Spidey’s reign at the top of the box office, where it has held the crown for six out of its seven weekends, puts it in rare company with titles such as Terms of Endearment (1983), Return of the Jedi (1983), Rain Man (1988), and Rocky IV (1985). For the record, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is still the champ of that particular category with a whopping 16 weekends in the top spot back in 1982. Overseas, Spider-Man has swung past the $1 billion mark to pin its worldwide total at $1.74 billion and counting.

Elsewhere, Scream collected another $7.35 million to raise its domestic total to $62.1 million, while Sing 2 brought in another $4.8 million for a $134.5 million total after six weeks of release — a total that bests the likes of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, West Side Story, The Matrix Resurrections and The King’s Man by a wide margin.

The new footage comes courtesy of Game Informer, and highlights Castle Mourne, an area that players will be able to explore once the game releases on February 25.

Check out the new Elden Ring gameplay video below:

The latest gameplay footage doesn’t show off a ton of new things but does give players a more extended look at just how big the world of Elden Ring seems to be. From the start, players begin riding towards a giant castle in the distance and end up making their way to it and battling against what looks to be some sort of giant guardian outside of it.

Throughout the video, we also get a look at some other monsters that will appear in the game, including what look to be jellyfish-like creatures, as well as more gruesome, skeletal monsters. Things end in typical Souls-like fashion, with the player taking on a fierce boss armed with a gigantic weapon to close out the video.

Benedict Cumberbatch Discusses Doctor Strange’s Mistakes in Spider-Man: No Way Home

Benedict Cumberbatch recently appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home, where his character Doctor Strange tried to help Peter Parker navigate a multiverse of problems.

RELATED: Sam Raimi Loved Spider-Man: No Way Home, Discusses Doctor Strange 2 Reshoots

In a recent discussion between Cumberbatch and Penélope Cruz for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Cumberbatch spoke briefly about his role in the large comic book movie. According to Cumberbatch, it was “extraordinary” to get the chance to appear in the film and highlight some of the “hefty” mistakes that Strange made in the film.

“I’m very spoiled because Tom Holland and I had petitioned that the neighborhood superheroes should cross paths again,” said Cumberbatch. “To have those three films culminate in that moment was extraordinary to be a part of. And to let my character make some hefty mistakes out of love — really, out of generosity towards someone he realizes he really cares for. From a stand-alone success of a movie, of a franchise, it’s phenomenal. I genuinely sat there entertained, thrilled, really moved. I laughed a lot. I cheered. It’s a fantastic feeling to be back in a cinema, being able to do that and to prove that not everything has to be streamed. And I think that’s important moving forward. It’s not just for exhibitors but for the social gain, the excitement of being in a crowd of people experiencing that live thing of watching it.”

In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Strange agrees to try and help Peter Parker in conducting a spell that will make it so people forget that Parker is Spider-Man. Things go pretty bad, however, and soon a multiverse is unleashed onto the pair that includes past villains from previous Spider-Man franchises.

With the Doctor Strange sequel set to launch later this year, we’ll also likely get to see Cumberbatch dealing with the after-effects of No Way Home, as well as what looks to be his own problems when it comes to the MCU’s multiverse.

As for No Way Home, the film currently holds a worldwide gross of over $1.6 billion and has become Sony’s highest-grossing film of all time. According to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures are already actively beginning to develop their next Spider-Man film together.

The Batman Irish Rating Confirms Mild Sex and Nudity

Fans already knew that the upcoming The Batman film would be receiving a PG-13 rating in the United States, but a recent classification of the film in Ireland has hinted at just how close to the line the film will be getting.

RELATED: Matt Reeves: Ben Affleck’s Batman Script Was ‘James Bond-ian’

Recently, the Irish Film Classification Office has detailed its rating for The Batman. The highly anticipated comic book film will be receiving a 15A rating, which essentially means the film is suitable for anyone over the age of 15 (or 12 if accompanied by an adult).

On the rating’s website, however, it details what to expect from the film, with violence and language listed as “strong” throughout the film, drugs listed as “moderate,” and sex and/or nudity listed as “mild.” While fans already knew that the film would not be Rated R in the United States, this latest classification does give them more of an idea of what to expect when the Robert Pattinson-led film launches on March 4, 2022.

“Two years of stalking the streets as the Batman, striking fear into the hearts of criminals, has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City. With only a few trusted allies — Alfred Pennyworth, Lt. James Gordon — amongst the city’s corrupt network of officials and high-profile figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens,” reads the synopsis.

Joining Pattinson are Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as GCPD’s James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Ferrell as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin. It will also feature Barry Keoghan, Jayme Lawson, Alex Ferns, and twins Max and Charlie Carver.

In addition to the upcoming film, Reeves is also currently developing two HBO Max series that will be set within the film’s universe. This includes a Gotham City Police project, and Penguin-centered series starring Colin Farrell.

WWE 2K22 Gameplay Trailer Released Ahead of Royal Rumble

Ahead of tonight’s WWE Royal Rumble event, which airs live on Peacock, publisher 2K and developer Visual Concepts have released a new WWE 2K22 gameplay trailer. The wrestling game will release on March 11, 2022, for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Check out the WWE 2k22 gameplay trailer below:

Following the particularly rough launch of WWE 2K20 — which saw the game launch in a glitchy state that was quickly panned by fans and critics — the WWE 2K series took a year off, with the release of WWE 2K21 being canceled to instead focus on fixing the issues throughout the series. Perhaps most importantly, the first thing that Visual Concepts did was redesign the engine for WWE 2K22 from the ground up. The team says that every dive, finisher, and attack should feel more realistic than in previous years and users will be able to be felt as soon as they pick up the controller.

New control options will also be available in the game, with a new configuration aimed to ensure players have more control over what they’re doing in the ring. Graphical overhauls have also been done, with Visual Concept saying these are the “best-ever” graphics for the franchise. Finally, the MyGM mode found in the game has been overhauled, although it’s currently unclear just what has been added into it as of now.

Each Universe in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Will Have Its Own Look

Not too much is known about the highly anticipated upcoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One), but in a recent interview, Phil Lord and Chris Miller spoke about the distinctive looks the team will look to achieve.

RELATED: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) Trailer Released

Speaking about the upcoming film, Miller said that the various dimensions that Miles Morales visits in the upcoming film will all have their own distinct animation styles. Each of them planned to correspond to their respective branch of the multiverse.

““It is, as Phil said, a very ambitious sequel, because we didn’t want to just sort of do the same thing again,” said Miller to Collider. “So the idea that we’d be going to different dimensions really opened up an opportunity artistically to have each world have its own art style and to be able to push the folks at ImageWorks to develop a way to have each dimension feel like it was drawn by a different artist’s hand. Seeing the development of that stuff is breathtaking, and really, it’s the reason we keep doing it because it’s so hard to get it right.”

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) will see Issa Rae’s Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman join Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld in the animated comic book sequel, who are reprising their roles as Miles Morales/Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen, respectively. Plot details are being kept under wraps but will reportedly feature multiple Spider-powered characters “across Marvel Comics’ time and space.”

It was announced in April that Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson will serve as the film’s trio of directors. Lord, Miller, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Christina Steinberg are all returning to produce the Sony Pictures project, with Alonzo Ruvalcaba co-producing. The original Spider-Verse director Peter Ramsey will executive produce, along with Aditya Sood.

The 2018 Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse film follows teen Miles Morales who becomes the Spider-Man of his universe and must join with five spider-powered individuals from other dimensions to stop a threat for all realities. The movie won the 2019 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film and grossed $375.5 million at the global box office.

A NetherRealm Dev Has Possibly ‘Leaked’ Evidence of Mortal Kombat 12

NetherRealm Studios has been quiet about its next project for some time. There has been plenty of speculation about what that title could be as there have been reports pointing to Mortal Kombat 12, rumors that allege it is creating a Marvel fighting game, and patterns that imply a third Injustice title. However, a recent tweet from NetherRealm’s senior production manager seems to imply that the team is going with another Mortal Kombat.

A NetherRealm Dev Has Possibly 'Leaked' Evidence of Mortal Kombat 12

Jonathan Andersen, also known as Jandy, tweeted the above image with the caption “Old desk art.” The seemingly innocuous tweet was quickly deleted and captured on some sites like ResetEra as users looked past said old desk art an onto the monitor in the upper right.

A NetherRealm Dev Has Possibly 'Leaked' Evidence of Mortal Kombat 12

When zooming in, it looks like there two files with the names “MK12_Mast…” and another with “Reptile.” The rest seem unrelated (like the “dinosaur” one), but both of those two have obvious ties to Mortal Kombat. Reptile, for example, was sorely missed in Mortal Kombat 11 as he only appeared in the Krypt and was one of the few iconic fighters to not have a slot in that recent entry.

A NetherRealm Dev Has Possibly 'Leaked' Evidence of Mortal Kombat 12

Even though Andersen wiped the tweet pretty quickly, some are saying that this “leak” was on purpose. The other part of the monitor appears to be a portion of an email saying how “[their] fans eagerly scrape the internet for any trace” before being cut off and finishing with a request to “take extra care with this material.” This is likely a reference to how astute Mortal Kombat fans are and how often they read through anything tangentially related to the game as a hint to the next DLC pack, character, or game. Series Co-Creator Ed Boon sometimes even has to tell fans that his tweets are not teases, even though he is notorious for his playful attitude on the platform. This email placement is ironic if not on purpose and is why some are having a hard time believing that this was an accident or if it is even real at all.

RELATED: How the Shadow the Hedgehog Game Gave Noob Saibot His Voice in Mortal Kombat 11

NetherRealm has not confirmed what it is working on as it has deviated from its original cycle of releasing a game every other year. Boon said in December 2021 that he did “appreciate the enthusiasm” for the next game and wishes he could announce it, but they are just not ready yet. He even ominously stated there were many “more variables involved than [they] are allowed to disclose.”

Games Beat’s Jeff Grubb reported that the developer is making Mortal Kombat 12 because of uncertainty surrounding Warner Bros. NetherRealm’s established pattern would dictate that an Injustice game was on the way, but that uncertainty would explain the hesitation that would come when working on a game with DC Comics characters.

An unconfirmed rumor that spread across Reddit also alleged that the studio was making Mortal Kombat 12 and that it would be more like an expanded version of Mortal Kombat 11 with all of the same arenas and characters from the most recent trilogy. However, that post also stated that the game would be announced at the Game Awards, which did not happen. A compilation game would make more sense, given the pivot suggested by Grubb, but that specific thread has some holes in it. However, NetherRealm (or Midway Games as it was known before Midway’s collapse) has previously created a best-of compilation-esque game after the other two Mortal Kombat trilogies — Mortal Kombat Trilogy and Mortal Kombat: Armageddon — which gives a small amount of credence to the idea.

RELATED: Mortal Kombat 11 Never Reached Its Potential

The series is also about to hit its 30th anniversary in 2022, so it isn’t out of the question that NetherRealm would be celebrating the occasion in some special way. But it remains to be seen how the studio would honor that milestone.

Rainbow Six Extraction’s MIA Operators Keep Gameplay Fresh

No matter if it’s a fighting game or a shooter, once I find a tried and true method that works, I typically stop experimenting. From finding a loadout I like in Call of Duty to using the same Taka-Arashi combos in Virtua Fighter after decades of play, my playstyle stays the same once I’ve found some success. However, I can’t get into such a groove in Ubisoft’s latest release, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Extraction. And that’s for the better.

The reason for this is due to the game’s MIA operators system, which gives death significance inside this co-op survival shooter. Once an operator dies, they are put out of commission until you save them as part of a mission or just die enough times that the game pities you and gives you extra characters. It’s a brilliant system that I’ve gotten to appreciate as it forces me to change how I play shooters.

RELATED: How Rainbow Six Extraction Stacks Up to Back 4 Blood & Aliens: Fireteam Elite

Similar to a game like Overwatch, each operator in Rainbow Six Extraction has their own abilities and weapons that they start with. I first found success as one of the support characters, a healer named Doc that has a special gun that can slightly heal teammates. However, I wound up dying and Doc was locked away and I wouldn’t get to play as him again for another hour or two. With Doc out on sick leave, I was forced to improvise and try the other classes.

Rainbow Six Extraction's MIA Operators Keep Gameplay Feeling Fresh

Admittedly, this system was annoying at first. Why can’t I just play any character at any time? The added punishment beyond already failing a mission in a very difficult game felt like the game was kicking me while I was down. Characters that take a lot of damage already have to recuperate, so this just felt like yet another harsh system. But after several hours with Extraction, it was clear that these systems were designed for players like me in order to get more out of the game.

While half are locked at first, Extraction features 18 operators in total. After being pushed off of my mains, I quickly found myself greatly enjoying those other playable characters and adapting my playstyle to their individual skills. Whether it was using a tactical hammer to destroy walls in order to create new routes or using decoys to distract the dangerous mutated enemies, I found myself having a blast and touching more of the game’s systems than I normally would in a regular shooter.

Games don’t often push users out of their comfort zones and that can lead to stagnation as many will choose the path of least resistance even if that means getting a worse experience. Extraction pushes back and puts up guard rails so that isn’t as likely to happen. It has a stable of worthy operators and it’s smart to have systems within the game to push players like me into trying them all out and further realize the game’s potential.

While I’m probably not going to pick up a new main in Virtua Fighter anytime soon as 20-year-old habits are hard to drop, Rainbow Six Extraction has greatly encouraged me to experiment more in other titles. Ubisoft’s brilliant MIA operator system has been a realization that I’ve been missing out and need to get away from simply sticking with what works all the time. After all, as the game has shown through countless deaths, there is still a lot of fun to be had in failure and the process of learning.
