Fans haven’t seen much of Adam Warlock since his reveal at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. However, as he prepares to have a large in the upcoming third entry, star Will Poulter says the character is still trying to grow up in a way.
Speaking to Empire Magazine, Poulter talked about Warlock’s brief appearance in the post-credits scene for Vol. 2, where he is “birthed” out of a cocoon by the Sovereign leader Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki). According to Poulter, he and director James Gunn talked about playing the character like a young person trying to find his way in the world.
“James and I discussed the idea of playing him, at least in this initial phase, in his infancy,” said Poulter. “As a young person entering the world, trying to develop his moral compass. There was a lot of comedy in that, but also some genuine pathos, some dramatic meat on the bone.”
While it’s still unclear what Poulter’s role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 holds, the Sovereign did serve as antagonist in the second film and looks primed to continue their hunt for the Guardians, now with a superpowered hero of their own in tow.
“In Marvel Studios‘ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days,” reads the synopsis. “Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is once again written and directed by James Gunn. MCU vets Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Sean Gunn, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel are returning to reprise their respective roles as Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Kraglin, Nebula, Mantis, Rocket, and Groot. The threequel will also include the introduction of franchise newcomers Will Poulter, Chukwudi Iwuji, and Maria Bakalova, who have signed on for the roles of Adam Warlock, High Evolutionary, and Cosmo the Spacedog.
