DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn has revealed that while Superman: Legacy is the first DC Universe movie, Blue Beetle is the first DCU character.
How is Blue Beetle the first DC Universe character?
On Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside of You podcast, Gunn revealed that “the first DCU character, for sure, is Blue Beetle” while Superman: Legacy is “the first full DCU movie.”
With how The Flash resets the DCEU, some characters from prior movies will be carried over to the new DCU. Though Blue Beetle was developed prior to James Gunn and Peter Safran’s universal reboot, the movie and characters will seemingly exist in the new timeline made by The Flash. Then, Superman: Legacy will be the first DCU film fully developed and produced by DC Studios under the leadership of Gunn and Safran.
Blue Beetle will release on Friday, August 18, 2023, by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film stars Maridueña, George Lopez, Susan Sarandon, and Becky G in a voice role. Maridueña has expressed excitement in portraying the DCEU’s first Latino lead, saying, “The goal was to create a movie for a young me and a young Angel that said, ‘Hey, man, someone who looks like you or comes from a similar background can be a superhero.”
