An Audience with the Red Queen: Helena Bonham Carter on Alice Through the Looking Glass

Disney‘s Alice Through the Looking Glass, the follow-up to Tim Burton’s live-action adaptation of the animated classic Alice in Wonderland, opens this week. In anticipation of the film’s release, ComingSoon.net sat down with Helena Bonham Carter, the Red Queen from the film.

Alice Through the Looking Glass is directed by James Bobin, produced by Suzanne Todd with a script by Linda Woolverton. The film follows Alice, Underland’s heroine, when she slips through a mirror and finds herself back with her friends the White Queen (Anne Hathaway), the Cheshire Cat, the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum. They tell her she’s the only one who can help the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), who’s fallen into a deep depression over the death of his family when a piece of the past resurfaces. As he begins to slip away, Alice decides to go back in time using the Chronosphere which she steals from Time himself, as played by Sacha Baron Cohen.

In Alice’s travels to the past, she uncovers not only how the Hatter lost his family but how The Red Queen became so big headed, which is the key for her in coming to her friend’s rescue. Through an exploration of the formative years of her Underland friends, Alice realizes that trying to change the past never works out as you’d think.

In our interview, find out what the legendary Helena Bonham Carter thought about reprising her Red Queen role, delving into the backstory, and more!
