Spontaneous Movie in the Works

Plans are underway for a Spontaneous movie.

Awesomeness Films is bringing to the big screen a Spontaneous movie, based on the young adult novel by Aaron Starmer

Awesomeness Films announced today plans for a Spontaneous movie. The film, based on the upcoming young adult novel Aaron Starmer, will feature an adapted screenplay by The Babysitter scribe Brian Duffield. Duffield will also produce the Spontaneous movie alongside Nicki Cortese through their Jurassic Party Productions. Brian Robbins and Matt Kaplan will produce from the Awesomeness side.

Published by Dutton, Spontaneous hits shelves on August 30. The story follows Mara, a senior at Covington High in suburban New Jersey. There, everything is going as normally as could be expected, until the day a fellow senior explodes during third period pre-calc. Soon other classmates meet similar fates, forcing Mara and her friends to figure out a way to survive normal high school problems, with the added stress of potentially combusting at any moment.

“Aaron Starmer skillfully welds sharp humor, deep loss, and roaring escapades,” author John Green says of the book. “Truly the smartest and funniest book about spontaneous combustion you will ever read.”

Spontaneous was named a Book Expo America 2016 Young Adult Buzz Book.

“‘Spontaneous’ is the type of fresh, exciting project that not only connects, but resonates with the young adult audience,” says Kaplan. “Aaron has created a dynamic, fast-paced and fun world that we look forward to bringing to life on screen. We couldn’t be more thrilled to have found the perfect voice in Brian Duffield to adapt this property.”

The announcement of the Spontaneous movie comes on the heels of Open Road’s recent acquisition of the distribution rights for Before I Fall, Awesomeness Film’s adaptation of the young adult novel with the same name by Lauren Oliver, out of Cannes. Awesomeness Films is also adapting Oliver’s next young adult novel, Replica.
