Lord & Miller to direct Artemis, based on new novel from Andy Weir
Deadline reports that directing team Phil Lord and Chris Miller have found their next project, the big screen adaptation of the forthcoming novel Artemis from The Martian author Andy Weir. No writer has been hired, but Simon Kinberg and Aditya Sood will produce the film for 20th Century Fox.
Artemis will be released on November 17 by Crown. The book is set on the first and only city on the moon in the near future and centers around Jazz Bashara, a porter and low-level smuggler who encounters a dangerous opportunity. The Amazon description for the book reads as follows:
“Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you’re not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you’ve got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down. But pulling off the impossible is just the start of her problems, as she learns that she’s stepped square into a conspiracy for control of Artemis itself—and that now, her only chance at survival lies in a gambit even riskier than the first.”
The pair’s directorial efforts to date include Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jump Street, The LEGO Movie, and 22 Jump Street. Their films have grossed over $1.2 billion at the global box office. Lord and Miller were previously directing the upcoming Han Solo feature for Lucasfilm but were fired from production earlier this summer. Ron Howard stepped in to finish the summer 2018 movie.
