New Movies on Blu-ray/DVD
War for the Planet of the Apes (exclusive clip)
This week’s most anticipated release finds the saga of Caesar (Andy Serkis) coming to a conclusion in this trilogy capper featuring a last stand between apes and militaristic humans led by Woody Harrelson’s deranged Colonel. ComingSoon.net also snagged an exclusive clip from the Blu-ray that highlights the challenges of creating/designing Bad Ape, War from the Planet of the Apes’ fan-favorite character, featuring the effects wizards at Weta Digital. Check it out below!
Annabelle: Creation
Director David F. Sandberg’s prequel to 2014’s Annabelle — and the fourth installment in The Conjuring universe — proved a smash hit, grossing over $300 million on a $15 million dollar budget. This time, we learn the true origin of the creepy Annabelle doll, dating back to when a dollmaker and his wife lose their daughter in a car accident. Years later, the couple allow young orphan girls, under the eye of a caring nun, to come live in their house, and that’s when the haunted antics start. Special features on the Blu-ray include two horror shorts titled “Attic Panic” and “Coffer,” deleted scenes, director commentary and a sneak peek at the upcoming Conjuring spin-off The Nun.
The Emoji Movie
This phone-based animated film got Candy CRUSHED by critics but should prove to be a fun offering for your little ones. T.J. Miller is the voice lead, a “meh” emoji who can actually show multiple expressions.
An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power
Al Gore’s Oscar-winning documentary that helped win him the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize returns for a sadly much-needed follow-up. With the struggle to make the U.S. Government and citizens recognize the urgency of climate change, it doesn’t hurt to get a refresher course.
Bushwick
Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy‘s Drax) leads this action thriller where a Texas militia takes over a Brooklyn neighborhood. Bautista and Pitch Perfect‘s Brittany Snow have to fight their way out in order to escape to New Jersey.
Dave Made a Maze
One of the most inventive and, quite frankly, insanely-imaginative movies of the year is this low-budget indie comedy from first-time director Bill Watterson (no relation to the cartoonist). It follows a frustrated artist named Dave (comedian Nick Thune), who builds an elaborate cardboard labyrinth in his living room that goes magically out of control. The terrific Meera Rohit Kumbhani plays his perturbed girlfriend, who organizes a rescue party to enter the DIY wonderland and rescue Dave. The film is full of amazing Michel Gondry-esque set pieces and some really funny bits, though it does occasionally suffer from slow pacing despite a super-tight 80-minute runtime. If you’re looking for something unusual that you won’t soon forget, we can’t recommend Dave Made a Maze enough!
Reissues
Demon Wind
Our pals at vintage reissue label Vinegar Syndrome have got two horror oddities out this week just in time for Halloween. The first is the 1990 flick Demon Wind, wherein a group of youngsters travel to an isolated farm to discover what happened to a guy’s grandparents 60 years before. They wind up getting attacked by demons, with a lot of nods to Sam Raimi’s first two Evil Dead movies along the way and some halfway decent monster makeups.
Blood Beat
The second Vinegar Syndrome reissue is the bizarre 1983 chiller Blood Beat, about a woman possessed by a big, blue-glowing spirit of a murderous samurai warrior. This is more surreal, dreamy horror than you may be used to from the cheesy slasher-era, but it sure is one-of-a-kind.
Web of the Spider
Garagehouse is releasing this shocker from 1971 on Blu-ray for the first time. It’s Italian director Anthony M. Dawson’s color remake of his own black and white 1964 horror film Castle of Blood, and features Klaus Kinski as Edgar Allan Poe, who makes a bet with a journalist (Anthony Franciosa) that he can’t spend on night in a haunted castle.
New On Digital HD
The Heyday of the Insensitive Bastards (exclusive clip)
Based on Robert Boswell’s similarly-titled short story collection, this anthology film features seven vignettes by different directors with stars the likes of James Franco, Natalie Portman, Kristen Wiig and Jimmy Kimmel. For the film’s digital release, Cinedigm has provided ComingSoon.net with the following exclusive clip, featuring Kate Mara and Amber Tamblyn. Check it out below!
Atomic Blonde
Charlize Theron plays a British secret agent with ass-kicking skills to spare in this adrenaline-fueled thriller from John Wick director David Leitch. James McAvoy, Eddie Marsan, John Goodman, Toby Jones, Sofia Boutella and Bill Skarsgård co-star.
Cars 3
Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) returns in this third installment of Pixar’s Cars trilogy where the aging racecar tries to stage a comeback.
The Glass Castle
Based on Jeannette Walls’ novel, Brie Larson stars as the daughter of two nonconformist nomads played by Woody Harrelson and Naomi Watts.
Cadillac Tramps: Life on the Edge (exclusive clip)
This rock doc covers the rise and fall of 90’s Orange County punk band The Cadillac Tramps, and features cameos from a number of huge 90’s musicians/bands including Mark McGrath from Sugar Ray, 311, Social Distortion, Pearl Jam, No Doubt, and more. Filmbluff has provided ComingSoon.net with the following exclusive clip from the doc, which you can check out below!
TV on Blu-ray and DVD
This week, TV fans can catch up with the zombie soap opera that is The Walking Dead: Season 7, as well as the werewolf soap opera Teen Wolf Season 6 Part 2, along with the collected Teen Wolf: The Complete Series.
