Game of Thrones’ Johannes Haukur Johannesson Joins Bloodshot

Game of Thrones’ Johannes Haukur Johannesson joins Bloodshot

Sony‘s upcoming adaptation of the Valiant Comics character Bloodshot has expanded its talented cast with the addition of Game of Thrones actor Johannes Haukur Johannesson, according to The Wrap. Though no character details have been released for his role, it has been confirmed that he will play a villain in the film.

Johannesson joins an already star-studded cast that includes Vin Diesel (Fast & Furious series, xXx series) in the title role, Toby Kebbell (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), Sam Heughan (Outlander), Eiza Gonzalez (Baby Driver), Michael Sheen (Tron Legacy), Talulah Riley (Westworld) and Alex Hernandez (Unreal).

Created by Kevin Van Hook, Don Perlin and Bob Layton, Bloodshot tells the story of a former soldier killed and brought back to life with technological upgrades, filling his body with billions of nanobots. This allows him to be the perfect soldier by healing from injuries, shapeshift, and even interact with technology.

Bloodshot is scheduled to begin production this July, with a script written by Academy Award nominated writer Eric Heisserer (Arrival, The Thing), and featuring Dave Wilson as director. Wilson worked with Deadpool director Tim Miller at Blur Studios and is best known for directing the cinematics for video games like Bioshock Infinite and Mass Effect 2.

Kumail Nanjiani and Rafe Spall Join Men in Black Spinoff

Kumail Nanjiani and Rafe Spall Join Men in Black Spinoff

Kumail Nanjiani and Rafe Spall join Men in Black spinoff

Sony‘s upcoming spinoff of its hit sci-fi franchise, Men in Black, has added four new actors to its cast, including Kumail Nanjiani, who The Wrap confirmed would star, and Rafe Spall, who The Hollywood Reporter learned was signed on. Spall and Nanjiani are also joined by street-dancing duo Laurent Nicolas and Larry Nicolas Bourgeois, known as the Les Twins.

Plot details for the new Men in Black movie are scarce, but the film is said to take place in London and centers around a “new combination” of characters and is more of an ensemble film than a duo like the first three movies.

The untitled Men in Black spinoff will not feature Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones, but it will expand on the world of the original trilogy. This will be a different project from the aborted 21 Jump Street franchise mashup, MIB 23, which Jonah Hill admitted previously was “too complicated” in terms of the deals needed. That film remains in development, however.

The new untitled Men in Black film is set to be directed by F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta ComptonThe Fate of the Furious) and is been written by Matt Holloway & Art Marcum (Iron ManTransformers: The Last Knight). Original franchise producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are back along with executive producer Steven Spielberg.

The original Men in Black, starring the winning combo of Smith and Jones, came out 21 years ago in the summer of 1997, and grossed $589 million worldwide. Its 2002 sequel, Men in Black II, grossed $441 million worldwide and was less enthusiastically received by critics and audiences alike, while the 2012 threequel MIB 3 took the series back on course creatively and earned $642 million worldwide, despite a troubled filming process. Barry Sonnenfeld directed all three original pictures.

Spall most recently starred in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which debuted a week ago and though it earned mixed reviews from critics and audiences, it’s already earned over $800 million globally and $200 million domestically. Nanjiani co-wrote and starred in the acclaimed romantic comedy The Big Sick last year, which became the highest-grossing indie film of 2017 and was nominated for numerous accolades, including the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.

Drew Goddard Talks Bad Times at the El Royale… On a Yacht

Drew Goddard Talks Bad Times at the El Royale... On a Yacht

Drew Goddard talks Bad Times at the El Royale… on a yacht

20th Century Fox invited ComingSoon.net to attend an early junket in scenic Lake Tahoe for their upcoming Bad Times at the El Royale! There we got to see 15 minutes of footage from the film and conduct an interview on the deck of a yacht with writer, director and producer (and Oscar-nominee) Drew Goddard (The Martian, Netflix’s Daredevil, forthcoming X-Force), which you check out in the player below!

In terms of the footage, we saw one full extended scene focused on Laramie Seymour Sullivan (Jon Hamm) as he enters his room at the El Royale hotel in 1969. He enters his room then opens his suitcase to reveal a vacuum cleaner… but that’s just a decoy. Underneath the fake vacuum is another suitcase containing tools and equipment. Sullivan begins systematically finding and clipping dozens of surveillance wiretaps in hidden nooks all around the room, including two in the phone he uses to call his young child. He then moves to the front desk, where the clerk is passed out after shooting up heroin. Sullivan uses a key to enter a dark basement passage which leads to a hallway with two-way mirrors where he observes others in their rooms. Some of the rooms feature Jeff Bridges as a man taking out the floorboards to hide something, Dakota Johnson tying a young passed out girl (Cailee Spaeny) to a chair, and Cynthia Erivo singinga haunting rendition of The Isley Brothers’ “This Old Heart of Mine.” The song permeates as Sullivan observes the different rooms, and removes film from a movie camera used to record the guests. By the end of the song Bridges is seated in his room, mesmerized. Sullivan heads out of the hotel to a telephone booth in the parking lot where he places a call to J. Edgar Hoover!

Bad Times at the El Royale is said to take place in the 1960s at a rundown hotel, centering on a cast of characters whose own shady agendas will violently collide: “Seven strangers, each with a secret to bury, meet at Lake Tahoe’s El Royale, a rundown hotel with a dark past. Over the course of one fateful night, everyone will have a last shot at redemption… before everything goes to hell.”

Alongside Chris Hemsworth (Avengers: Infinity WarThor: Ragnarok), the film stars Jon Hamm (Mad MenTag), Jeff Bridges (The Big LebowskiKingsman: The Golden Circle), Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades series), Cynthia Erivo (Widows), Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) and Cailee Spaeny (Pacific Rim Uprising).

Bad Times at the El Royale serves as a reunion between Hemsworth and Goddard, who previously collaborated on the 2012 horror movie The Cabin in the Woods.

Bad Times at the El Royale is set to hit theaters on October 12, 2018.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II & Sara Vickers Join Watchmen Cast

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II & Sara Vickers join Watchmen cast

Variety reports that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman, The Get Down, The Handmaid’s Tale) and Sara Vickers (Endeavour, The Alienist, The Crown) have joined the Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen pilot for HBO. The announcement comes after yesterday’s news that Sleepy Hollow’s Tom Mison had also joined the cast.

Originally published as a 12-issue miniseries beginning in 1986, Watchmen quickly become one of sequential art’s most acclaimed stories. The original story centers on a murder-mystery before unfolding into a planet-altering conspiracy that ultimately asks where the fine line is drawn between heroes and villains.

In a letter to fans, Lindelof made it clear that the Watchmen series won’t be an adaptation of the comics, but an original story with new faces and unknown characters introduced into the universe that he intends to remix.

The pilot is already made up of an ensemble cast that includes Jeremy Irons (Justice League), Regina King (The Leftovers), Don Johnson (Django Unchained), Louis Gossett Jr. (Hap and Leonard), Tim Blake Nelson (Colossal), Adelaide Clemens (Rectify), Andrew Howard (Bates Motel), Frances Fisher (Masters of Sex), Jacob Ming-Trent (White Famous), and Tom Mison.

Since the film’s release, DC Comics released an extensive “Before Watchmen” comic line, telling stories from the pasts of the central characters. More recently, DC Comics has made efforts to integrate Watchmen into the broader DC Multiverse with their Doomsday Clock series.

Lindelof serves as creator, writer, showrunner, and executive producer on the Watchmen series, with Tom Spezialy also executive producing. Nicole Kassell will executive produce and direct the pilot.

Ant-Man and The Wasp Review:

Breezy, funny and frequently pointless Ant-Man and The Wasp is either a superhero comedy with action bits or an action film with comedy bits and no one seems sure which one it is. Authorial indecision fills every minute of the follow-up to 2015’s Ant-Man keeping the various entertaining pieces from ever gelling together into a complete whole. There’s a lot to like about the newest Marvel film – most of it circling around Ant-Man (Rudd) and Wasp (Lilly) themselves – but it takes a lot of work to dig it out from under two villains, four concurrent plots and a ton of ant puns.

Roughly two years after the events of Captain America: Civil War, Ant-Man and The Wasp picks up on what Scott Lang has been doing since then … namely playing drums and building elaborate mazes for his daughter to play in. Meanwhile former Ant-Man Hank Pym (Douglas) and daughter Hope have been on the run from the law while searching for the long lost Janet Van Dyne (Pfeiffer). Just as it looks like their quest is at an end a mysterious saboteur (John-Kamen) shows up looking for Janet herself. The only chance of beating her to the punch is if Scott and Hope can patch up their differences and turn themselves into a real team.

Also there’s a black market weapons dealer who wants Hank’s technology, Scott’s need to stay ahead of the government agents who want to arrest him for becoming Ant-Man again, Luis’ (Peña) upcoming presentation for a big client he and Scott need to land to keep their new business running plus a few more things. There is a lot going on in Ant-Man and The Wasp and most of it does not mesh together very well no matter how hard director Peyton Reed (and his five writers) try.

One big question the notably troubled production of the first Ant-Man raised was how much of the finished film was the vision of original director Edgar Wright and how much came from replacement Reed. With Reed returning for the sequel we start to get a lot more of an idea and it’s a mixed bag at best. On the one hand many of the individual bits – be they action or comedy – are excellent in and of themselves. He takes full advantage of Rudd and Peña’s skill with comedy, especially Rudd’s skill with self-deprecation. The filmmakers have also spent a lot of time thinking of more size changing gags and integrating them into the action sequences. When Ant-Man and The Wasp actually do get a chance to fight together it’s truly thrilling. Unfortunately it also highlights how out of balance much of the film is. It’s not so much that no one has any idea what exactly to do for Scott’s next act (the thunder of the Giant Man reveal having been stolen, albeit with great effect, by Civil War) as they have too many. Rather than winnow them down to a single focused narrative Reed has decided to use them all.

He seems to love nothing so much as to let Scott embarrass himself (actually, he just seems to like this kind of humor in general, and uses it liberally). It really is funny in and of itself (especially when combined with size malfunctions on Scott’s suit) but it’s the kind of joke that requires time to work, everyone has to stop while Scott squirms. In a pure comedy that’s fine, in an action film it stops momentum cold and it’s unclear if the reward is worth the cost. It also takes time away from the necessary storytelling needed to connect the bones of the film together leaving new characters underdeveloped and exposition rushed. New villainess Ghost, who has the potential to be new and interesting with a personal story that has nothing to do with destroying the world or the like, is left to get all of her backstory out in one terrible monologue which carries no emotional weight or connection for the audience, and she’s one of the lucky ones.

It also has a lot of the issues sequels always have, with elements carried over for no reason other than the appeared in the previous film, such as Luis’ various shaggy dog stories and the ex-cons they work with. It also reboots Scott and Hope’s relationship back to the status quo of the first film rather than think of a new way to develop it. Every so often all of these elements come together into something truly fun, but then they fly apart again leaving you wondering how much better this all would be if a few bits were lopped off it. If any word sums up Ant-Man and The Wasp it’s the one you never want to hear about a sequel: extraneous.

Amazon Orders 3 YA Pilots Including College, Panic, and The Wilds

Amazon Orders 3 YA Pilots Including College, Panic, and The Wilds

Amazon orders 3 YA pilot series including College, Panic, and The Wilds

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Amazon has ordered three YA (Young Adult) drama pilots as part of their effort to expand their YA selection. Jennifer Salke, the new head of Amazon Studios, had previously stated that the YA genre was one of her top priorities when she took on her new role. Now she has approved the pilot order of CollegePanic, and The Wilds. You can read more information about the three YA series below.

Created by Marja-Lewis Ryan, College digs beyond the headlines that make college campuses ripe for drama and steps inside the shoes of six roommates as they hook up, mess up and grow up on their own terms. Producers Channing Tatum and Jill Soloway (Transparent) bring style and relevance to this unabashed peek into the lives of the next generation.

College is a joint production between Free Association and Topple Productions, with Tatum (6 Balloons), Soloway, Reid Carolin (6 Balloons), Andrea Sperling (Transparent) and Peter Kiernan (6 Balloons) as executive producers. The project falls under Soloway’s overall deal with Amazon Studios and comes as the showrunner is mulling the future of Transparent without fired star Jeffrey Tambor.

Based on Lauren Oliver’s New York Times best-selling novel, Panic brings viewers to a forgotten rural town where every year the graduating seniors risk their lives in an illegal, high-stakes game to win life-changing money — and a chance to escape. Anonymous judges force the players through a series of challenges that will compel them to confront their deepest fears and upend their ideas of who they are, who to trust and who they might become. This year, 47 players will compete for the biggest pot ever. All of them will be changed. Only one will win.

Panic is written and created by Oliver, executive produced by Joe Roth and Jeff Kirschenbaum of Roth Kirschenbaum Films (Maleficent 2) with Alyssa Altman serving as co-executive producer. Oliver will also be executive producing and Lynley Bird co-executive producing both for Glasstown Entertainment, and Elle Triedman (Siren, Revenge) also executive producing.

The Wilds follows a group of teenage girls from radically different backgrounds find themselves stranded on a remote island, unaware that they have just become the subjects of an elaborate social experiment. Part survival drama, part dystopic slumber party, The Wilds explores the past and present struggles of these young women, offering a vivid portrayal of what it means to grow up female in our time — whether you are lost in the wilderness or not.

The Wilds is a co-production with ABC Signature and is written and executive produced by Sarah Streicher and executive produced by Jamie Tarses’ Fanfare and Dylan Clark Productions.

Fahrenheit 11/9 Release Date Revealed by Michael Moore

Fahrenheit 11/9 Release Date Revealed by Michael Moore

Fahrenheit 11/9 release date revealed by Michael Moore

Michael Moore has announced on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert the release date for his upcoming hot button documentary Fahrenheit 11/9, which focuses on the 2016 United States presidential election and the subsequent presidency of Donald Trump. The Fahrenheit 11/9 release date is September 21, which corresponds with the release of the Jack Black horror/fantasy The House with a Clock in Its Walls, the Oscar Isaac drama Life Itself, the indie crime thriller Assassination Nation and and the Keira Knightley biopic Colette.

Given that Moore’s 2004 documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 grossed over $222 million dollars, a release date in the height of election season with no major franchise tentpoles could give the film a major shot at finding a wide audience. Check out the video from the Colbert interview below, which includes a short clip from the movie featuring Moore at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club.

Michael Moore’s Fahrenheit 11/9 is a provocative and comedic look at the times in which we live. It will explore the two most important questions of the Trump Era: How the f**k did we get here, and how the f**k do we get out? It’s the film to see before it’s too late.

Moore, an Academy Award-winning director, is helming the film. The “11/9” in the title refers to the day Donald Trump was declared President of the United States, at 2:29AM in the morning of November 9th, 2016. But months before that infamous night, Moore had already begun ruminating on what could be done to stop the, according to him, “carnage Trump would inflict while president.” In June of 2016, Michael Moore famously and publicly predicted that Trump would indeed win the White House in November by winning the states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. Trump won the presidency by just 77,000 combined votes from those three states.

Fahrenheit ‪11/9 will be presented with the mix of outrage and mischievous humor that has made Moore the most successful documentary filmmaker in the world. To make the Trump documentary, Moore has reunited with his acclaimed team from Fahrenheit ‪9/11 — Oscar-nominated documentary directors/producers Meghan O’Hara, Tia Lessin and Carl Deal.

Filming on Moore’s new Trump documentary has been done under a strict cloak of secrecy. “No matter what you throw at him, it hasn’t worked,” says Moore. “No matter what is revealed, he remains standing. Facts, reality, brains cannot defeat him. Even when he commits a self-inflicted wound, he gets up the next morning and keeps going and tweeting… That all ends with this movie.”

How do you feel about a Michael Moore-helmed Donald Trump documentary? Will you check out Fahrenheit 11/9 in theaters? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
