Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom bites into the domestic box office with $150 million debut
Universal Pictures’ Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has finally arrived in domestic theaters, and the fifth film in the dinosaur series took a bite out of the competition with an estimated $150 million debut. The film’s domestic box office opening was down 28% compared to 2015’s Jurassic World which opened to $208 million. Internationally, the film continues to crash through barriers with an additional $106.7 million, including a second weekend atop the China box office where it crossed $200 million. The sequel now has a worldwide total of $711.5 million and counting. Directed by J.A. Bayona, the film stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, James Cromwell, Ted Levine, Justice Smith, Geraldine Chaplin, Daniella Pineda, Toby Jones, Rafe Spall and Isabella Sermon, with BD Wong and Jeff Goldblum.
Disney•Pixar‘s Incredibles 2 fell by 56% domestically with a weekend total of $80.9 million, bringing its US total to $350.3 million over 10 days. The film is already the #3 film of the year and Pixar’s #4 biggest release ever and has surpassed the entire run of the original The Incredibles. Internationally, Incredibles 2 opened this weekend in China, India, and Thailand. With an estimated $56.8 million over the weekend from approximately 44% of the market, the international total comes to $134.6 million with a global total of $485 million. Written and directed by Brad Bird, the film features the voices of Holly Hunter, Craig T. Nelson, Sarah Vowell, Huck Milner, Samuel L. Jackson, Brad Bird, Bob Odenkirk, Catherine Keener, Jonathan Banks, Sophia Bush, and Isabella Rossellini.
Warner Bros. Pictures‘ Ocean’s 8 fell to third place with $11.65 million, bringing the spin-off to a domestic total of $100.3 million. Internationally the film has brought in an additional $26.9 million, giving it a global total of $171 million. Directed by Gary Ross, the movie stars Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett plus Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson and James Corden.
The New Line Cinema comedy Tag, fell 45% domestically for a weekend total of $8.2 million. The adult-oriented comedy now sits at $30.3 million at the domestic box office. Directed by Jeff Tomsic the ensemble comedy stars Ed Helms, Jake Johnson, Annabelle Wallis, Hannibal Buress, Isla Fisher, Rashida Jones, Leslie Bibb, Jon Hamm, and Jeremy Renner.
20th Century Fox‘s Deadpool 2 maintained its position in fifth place as well, bringing in an additional $5.25 million and pushing it across the $300 million mark domestically. Internationally, the sequel brought in an additional $5.3 million giving it a total of $403 million and a global total of $707 million.The David Leitch-directed sequel stars Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Julian Dennison, Zazie Beetz, T.J. Miller, Brianna Hildebrand, and Jack Kesy. Directed by J.A. Bayona, the film stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, James Cromwell, Ted Levine, Justice Smith, Geraldine Chaplin, Daniella Pineda, Toby Jones, Rafe Spall and Isabella Sermon, while BD Wong and Jeff Goldblum reprise their roles.
