Details surface about new Beverly Hills 90210 revival, with a meta-twist
With series revivals all the rage these days, rumors about the long-running teen drama Beverly Hills 90210 returning to the small screen were being floated around just last month. It turns out, the show is talking about staging a comeback, just not in the way most people might expect.
According to TVLine (via /Film), there is talk of bringing back Beverly Hills 90210, but as a one-hour, meta-mockumentary that would feature the show’s original cast as they try to get yet another 90210 revival series off the ground. (The show’s had one previously revival, titled simply 90210, which ran for five seasons on The CW from 2008-2013).
Original cast-members Jennie Garth, Jason Priestley, Tori Spelling, Ian Ziering, Brian Austin Green and Gabrielle Carteris would all play caricatures of their real-life selves as they try to cash in on TV’s hottest new trend and get a new iteration of their show back on the air. However, neither Shannen Doherty and Luke Perry are expected to be involved.
Mike Chessler and Chris Alberghini, who worked on The CW series, are on board to write and executive produce. They have some history with the mockumentary format, as well, as the two created So NoTORIous, the Tori Spelling vehicle that aired for one season on VH1 back in 2006.
It’s also being reported that several networks and streaming platforms are interested in picking up the project. It’s currently being shepherded around by CBS Studios, so it’s possible that it might end up seeing the light of day after all.
