Comic-Con: Black Panther 2, Captain Marvel 2, and Guardians 3 Confirmed!

Today at the Marvel Studios panel at San Diego Comic-Con, it was officially announced that a slew of sequels are officially in development at Marvel Studios including Black Panther 2, Captain Marvel 2, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The first Guardians of the Galaxy was the surprise hit of the second phase in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, grossing nearly $775 million at the box office and earning widespread critical acclaim for its abundance of humor, emotional story and Gunn’s direction, in addition to its soundtrack becoming the first album of its genre consisting of previously released songs to top the Billboard 200 chart and having sold over 2.5 million copies in 2014 alone. The second film hit theaters three years later and prove to be a near equal success to its predecessor, grossing over $800 million at the box office and earning more acclaim from critics and audiences who continued to praise the performances, direction, soundtrack and story while some criticized a feeling of familiarity in some of the film’s humor.

Black Panther arrived in February of 2018 with Chadwick Boseman in the titular role. Creed director Ryan Coogler stepped behind the camera for the movie, which featured an amazing ensemble including Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis. Black Panther debuted in 2018 to the tune of  $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office and became the first Marvel Studios movie to win an Academy Award, taking home three of the coveted prizes.

Captain Marvel was released in March of 2019 with Brie Larson starring as the titular hero, delivering a tale set in the early 90s of the MCU and offering a chance to see a young Nick Fury as well as introducing the sinister Skrulls from the pages of Marvel comics. The film also starred Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Algenis Perez Soto, Rune Temte, McKenna Grace, with Annette Bening, and Jude Law. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck directed the film which brought in $1.12 billion worldwide.
