Designated Survivor Season 3 Episode 8 Recap

In the previous episode of Netflix’s Designated Survivor, Hannah died at the hands of a bioweapons engineer. In Designated Survivor Season 3 Episode 8, Kirkman worked to find and neutralize Momberg, while news broke about the FlagKind collusion.

Pandora’s Box

Momberg made his way from Boston to Mississippi. He showed up at a university lab where a colleague of Eli’s recognized him. She called Eli and used her Smart Dust to help track him before he killed her.

The decision of what to do next consumed Kirkman. He wanted to keep the information from the public to not cause panic among citizens or tip off Momberg. The administration had the public on the lookout for him as a kidnapper. They tracked him with the Smart Dust to a Houston hotel. They briefed Moss’s team in good faith. However, Moss told the governor of Texas, who informed the public.

When the authorities were about to take him in, Momberg consumed cyanide. Before he died, he claimed he had opened a Pandora’s Box. As the authorities were closing in on him, Momberg had uploaded the instructions to crafting the virus. It had been taken down but not before it had been downloaded a dozen times.

Patron

Davis Marlowe, another colleague of Eli’s, reached out to him. A year prior, a man asked him to research infections that targeted certain subgroups of the population. As it was unethical, Marlowe said no, but he reasoned that not everyone would have. Since Momberg wouldn’t have had the funding on his own, he would’ve needed a wealthy patron.

While Phil Brunton was on TV blasting Kirkman, Marlowe called Eli. He was the man who had approached him.

In Moss’s Head

After news broke about the collusion between FlagKind and the FDA, the media blamed Moss for it. Lorraine had Emily work with Isabel to weed out any questionable approvals under Kirkman, since they knew Moss’s campaign would be looking. Isabel was concerned her involvement would violate the Hatch Act. She told Emily that she knew about Aaron.

Lorraine told Emily that FlagKind would have to give the drug away for free. Emily suspected how Lorraine would know that, especially after Detwiler announced it.

Promise and Reconciliation

Emily had been stalling on Carrie’s imminent death. She wasn’t ready, even though Carrie was. Emily blamed herself for being caught up in the campaign. Carrie asked Emily to promise that she would be there for her when she died and to continue her work after she was gone.

Lynn found out that Harper had gone after Flagg because of her. He had risked his job for her.

Troy apologized to Dontae. He had seen a doctor who assured him he wouldn’t have had a chance to get infected with HIV. The doctor wrote him a prescription for PrEP. Dontae decided to give him a second chance.
