Todd Phillips’ Joker to screen at TIFF 2019

Director Todd Phillips’ upcoming Scorcese-influenced supervillain flick Joker will make the rounds on the festival circuit. According to The Playlist, the Joaquin Phoenix vehicle will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival in September. However, it denotes the film will have its “North American premiere” there, and not its “world premiere.” This heavily implies it’ll also screen at the Venice Film Festival, which kicks off at the end of August. However, as of this writing, there’s been no confirmation of this.

Joker centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck (Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale.

Todd Phillips (The Hangover trilogy) directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with writer Scott Silver (The Fighter), based on characters from DC. The film is being produced by Phillips and Bradley Cooper under their Joint Effort banner, and Emma Tillinger Koskoff. It is executive produced by Richard Baratta, Joseph Garner, and Bruce Berman.

Joker opens in theaters everywhere on October 4.
