October Horror Movie Recommendation: The Autopsy of Jane Doe

Every day for the month of October, Coming Soon is making a new horror movie recommendation for those eager to find a new frightening flick for Halloween. From the creepy goodness of a classy ghost story to a blood-spattered gorefest and everything in between, we’ll have something for every taste of horror. And today’s pick is…

The Autopsy of Jane Doe

What’s The Autopsy of Jane Doe: After making an international splash with his 2010 debut Trollhunter, writer/director André Øvredal (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark) came to the states for his second time behind the camera and his first English-language film, the darkly chilling and non-stop thrilling The Autopsy of Jane Doe. Led by powerhouse performers Emile Hirsch (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Emmy winner Brian Cox (Succession), the film centers around a father and son coroner team as they are brought the body of a Jane Doe whose cause of death becomes a continuing rabbit hole of mysteries. As the two uncover more dark secrets in the seemingly dead body, mysterious and paranormal phenomena begin occurring around their mortuary that send the two down a horrifying path.

Why The Autopsy of Jane Doe rules: Following the success of Trollhunter and his viewing of The Conjuring, Øvredal stated in interviews he wanted to find a project in which he could prove himself a versatile filmmaker and find something that went back to the basics of classic horror filmmaking as the James Wan-helmed film did, landing the script to Autopsy after seeing it appear on the Black List. In addition to strong performances from the leading duo, Øvredal really achieved his goal as he carefully crafts a moody, tense and mysterious chiller in which audiences are drawn in to the secrets behind the titular body while also showing increasingly terrifying imagery and a shocker of an ending that will sit with audiences for many moons after viewing it.

How scary is The Autopsy of Jane Doe: Between the eerie atmosphere, horrifying prosthetic effects, terrifying jump scares and creepy bumps in the night, this is one of the more genuinely scary and terrifying entries in the horror genre in recent years.

Be on the lookout for: In a attempt to preserve a feel of authenticity and help audiences connect on a human level, Øvredal explicitly ensured that he interviewed actresses to portray the part of the titular corpse, aside from some prosthetic effects. Despite giving multiple interviews, Olwen Catherine Kelly was the director’s first choice after her first interview, and thanks to her extensive knowledge of yoga, she was able to control her body and breathing in an ultrarealistic manner.

Where to watch The Autopsy of Jane Doe: The chilling thriller is available to stream on Netflix for those with a subscription, while also being available for digital purchase on Amazon Prime Video starting at $9.99. Pick up your copy of the Blu-ray combo pack here or the DVD edition here!
